Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heirs of General Practice is a frieze of glimpses of young doctors with patients of every age—about a dozen physicians in all, who belong to the new medical specialty called family practice. They are people who have addressed themselves to a need for a unifying generalism in a world that has become greatly subdivided by specialization, physicians who work with the "unquantifiable idea that a doctor who treats your grandmother, your father, your niece, and your daughter will be more adroit in treating you." These young men and women are seen in their examining rooms in various rural communities in Maine, but Maine is only the example. Their medical objectives, their successes, the professional obstacles they do and do not overcome are representative of any place family practitioners are working. While essential medical background is provided, McPhee's masterful approach to a trend significant to all of us is replete with affecting, and often amusing, stories about both doctors and their charges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of producing this book of case histories from general family prac tice was only a twinkle in the editors' eyes until October 1980, when in a room in the Marriott Hotel in New Orleans, the editors met with John Fry, Joseph Levenstein and Bill Jackson to discuss new book projects. The idea was put to the group, which endorsed it enthusiastically. Encouraged by this and by John Fry's advice, the conception of The Nature of General Family Practice took place. It was agreed that to illustrate the universal nature of general family prac tice it would be useful to collect case histories from all around the world, that for preference they should be brief, and that they should be ac companied by major questions and sub-questions, but no answers. The name 'Vignettes' was applied to these cases and their questions. Subsequently, well over a hundred family physicians were asked by letter to provide ten vignettes. Sixty doctors from ten countries accepted the invitation and forwarded their contributions during the second half of 1981. Almost all of those who, for a variety of reasons were unable to contribute, said they liked the idea and looked forward to using the final product. Altogether, over 600 vignettes were received, and 583 selected for final inclusion.

Our user survey resulted in 554 responses from general practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare providers across Australia. With this feedback, we were able to commission authors with expertise on topics such as child health and wellbeing and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, as well as on other topics important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. All the revised chapters were sent to external experts and relevant peak bodies across Australia. The support we have received in developing this National Guide has been phenomenal.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the impact of 'burnout' on the current NHS GP workforce and how this can be addressed, from an insider GP perspective. Adam Staten, recently qualified GP, and Euan Lawson, Fellow of the RCGP with over 20 years experience, discuss in engaging, accessible chapters how burnout manifests psychologically, the complex reasons why GPs burn out and the individual and broader impact this can have. Most importantly, the book offers practical advice on how to avoid burning out and combat the negative effects of an increasingly high-pressure role, exploring how GPs can develop resilience and work in a way that builds a healthier work-life balance. A section is dedicated to the array of GP job options, with testimonies from practitioners working in diverse areas from education and academia to military and humanitarian settings. This book explores the challenges of working in general practice today, but it also demonstrates the potential for every GP to experience a personally and professionally satisfying career. Providing practical, workable advice and links to resources for help and support, the book enables readers to find opportunity within the perceived 'crisis'. By reading this book, you will find the means to improve not just your own working life but also to enhance the way you deliver care to your patients.
