In addressing the issues, the Task Force met 18 times, reviewed relevant reference material, debated background papers prepared by members, heard presentations from invited speakers, and conducted four public meetings. This document discusses the changes in place and underway and the directions for change in aboriginal issues, biological diversity, decision-making and institutional change, global climate change, harvesting methods, pest management, private land forests, protected areas, pulp and paper industrial effluent, solid waste management, worker protection and involvement, and the economics of both timber for the industry and non-timber forest values.

Book excerpt: In analysing the development and achievements of Polish forestry and forest industries over the last four decades, it is necessary to take into consideration the situation prevailing after the end of the Second World War, when these sectors of the national economy were starting their activities. First of all, it is necessary to consider the effects of the war such as: (a) the harvesting from the forests of the present Polish territory of 3 about 200 million m of merchantable wood, which is equal to the normal harvest over a l2-year period; (b) the destruction of over half the woodworking industrial potential. In consequence, the forested area inside the new Polish boundaries amounted 40 years ago only to 20.8 per cent of the whole area of the country. There has been a continuing process of increasing the forested area of the country (although at a diminishing rate). In 1986 the forest area amounted to 27.7 per cent of the land surface, that is to 8.7 million ha, an increase of over 2 million ha in 40 years. Intensive afforestation, performed regardless of the ownership category of the land by the State forest service, was aimed primarily at making good the losses in the forested area and the rational use of land not fit for agricultural purposes.

Finally, recommendations are made that may help to advance the non-timber forest sector in Ontario.

Book excerpt: "The Ontario forestry sector is beginning to rebound from its recent recession, so the ability of the sector to remain competitive is crucial. The future of the sector is dependent on the capabilities of the upcoming foresters graduating from accredited forestry institutions. A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry representatives across Ontario to determine, from their perspective, whether graduates are prepared with the necessary skills to work proficiently in the forestry sector and whether these graduates affect industry competitiveness. The structure of the forestry sector and post-secondary forestry education improvement are major concerns for the sector because of the ability of graduates to influence competitiveness and gain appropriate skills respectively."-- from abstract.

Book excerpt: Changes in production, demand, supply, and trade patterns; the impact of green building and bioenergy on industry practices and policy infrastructure; and new economies with production advantages and large consumption bases all present challenges and opportunities in the forest sector. With contributions from leading experts in academia and professional organizations, The Global Forest Sector: Changes, Practices, and Prospects fills a gap in the literature that is preventing students, scholars, and policy makers from developing a timely, structured, big-picture view of forest sector business. In addition, the book reviews current thinking on a wide variety of business management issues in the forest sector. The book covers managing change in the global forest sector and the impact of globalization on forest users. It discusses markets and market forces, new products and product categories, and the influence of China and Russia. The book then examines the environmental paradigm, including environmental activism, sustainability, and the impact of green building and bioenergy. The book concludes with coverage of the role of information technology, corporate social responsibility, innovation, and next steps. Overall, this book helps readers both develop a bird’s eye view of the changes surrounding the forest sector as well as have a magnified view of numerous managerial issues associated with these changes. The content paints a picture of the current and changing forest sector including the state of forests, the nature of markets, the newly emerged patterns of stakeholder impact, and evolution of key business practices. It provides the foundation needed to develop the conservation-based economy required for future success in the global forest sector.
