D IT is only since our dismal failure at Stockholm in 1912 that the Modern Olympic Games have aroused any vital interest in the mind of the man in the street, and even then it has been a mere passing feeling of shame that we should fall so low as to be beaten by even the lesser European nations, who for generations past have been our pupils 1n all sporting pastimes. Moreover, the judgment of the public has been passed upon the Olympic Games without a real knowledge of the ancient festivals, their purpose and practice, or why they have been revived in modern times. Through the genius and tactful care of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and after years of careful research, the Modern Olympic Games are at' last reaching a pitch of perfection which will still more nearly approach its consummation after the International Congress held in Paris this year to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of the Olympic movement. At the Congress it is hoped to arrive at an amateur definition which will be acceptable to all nations this should do much to clear away that which has been a source of some slight bitterness of feeling in the past. My desire, in offering this book to the public, is that abetter understanding of the Olympic movement may e acquired and a greater interest in athletics generated in the minds of the rising generation. Much misconception and many unfair hits have done much to retard a movement from which surely nothing but good can accrue, for the healthy cult of athletics is bound to raise the physical standard of the young manhood of the world, with all its attendant virtues of mind and body control engendered by the discipline of training. These great quadrennial meetings must also lead to a better under standing by the youths of the nations of each other's virtues, short comings, and limitations; and this in itself is good. For it must not be forgotten that these Games are not confined to one class, but are participated in by university students of all nations, who, in due course, will fill responsible posts in the councils and govern ments of their various countries. Surely the knowledge they have then gained of each other at the Olympic Games will enable them' to view each other's actions in international politics with tolerance, and with the understanding born of a clearer knowledge of the national peculiarities which have inspired the action. Utilizing primary sources such as personal correspondence and minutes of meetings of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its Executive Board, this paper demonstrates how attitudes towards commercialism within the U.S.-based Olympic movement evolved from the reign of former United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and IOC President Avery Brundage to Peter Ueberroth’s leadership of the 1984 Olympics. Included within is a historical overview of several important milestones in Olympic history, including commercialism that kickstarted the Games in the early 20th century, the rising influence of television in the 1970’s, ambush marketing in the 1980’s, the development of the sponsorship program for the 1984 Olympic Games, and events leading to the establishment of The Olympic Partners (TOP) program in 1985. Calling into dispute several long-standing assumptions about the motives of American leaders in the global Olympic movement as well as several seminal figures in the development of the TOP program, this research makes an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on the history of the Olympic Games.

New institutionalism and resource-dependence theory provide an analytical and explanatory framework for this study. The research adopted a qualitative method strategy comprising a series of interviews and the analysis of documents, reports, press and social media. The recent inclusion of the sport in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme has created challenges, primarily because of strong values inherent within the sport. The research, however, shows that the values of a sport can expand and develop in order to fit the regulatory legitimacy required by inclusion in the Olympic Games. Nonetheless, the research also shows that involvement with the IOC raises questions about who 'owns' the sport.

Coubertin's view has a very strong significance, especially in light of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 OG following the corona crisis, and maximum attention should be given to the existence of Coubertin's legacy by viewing sport as a way of life, not only as a 17-day OG celebration, but in building a structural sports component into children's education. The OG have the potential of being a platform for dealing with serious problems in society, and issues on a daily agenda. The Olympic education programs needs to respond to these events in order to preserve the Olympic spirit of the Games, and to promote the ideals, values, and the working principles. This study gives an overview of the Olympic education programs development, and aim to find a way of implementing Olympic education programme, as well as keeping Olympism a live every day during the year. The mission is to implement an integral, and global education program in the world, and raising the awareness of this philosophy as a way of life.

Book excerpt: The Olympic charter is the binding document that rules the Olympic Movement which, among other things, has the role of managing the organization of the biggest and most complex sporting event in the world - the Olympic Games. The multi-disciplinary nature of this event implies the involvement of diverse stakeholders, including hosts and respective communities that, besides having different interests, rely on each other to fulfil them. As the owner of the event, the International Olympic Committee has the role of managing these interests through the update and modification of the Olympic charter. This paper explores the evolution of this document, taking special consideration of the influence that occurrences related with stakeholder's governance and urban strategies of hosts had on its rules. A cross-referenced review between the historical events within these two fields of study is compared to a systematic review of the charter's evolution. The results include a timeline with eight periods identifying the progress of those relationships, showing that the Olympic charter has had a more reactive than pro-active character: it was highly influenced by hosts and other internal and external governance issues that, together, were responsible for the addition of new rules.
