Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Glaciers of Switzerland and North Wales Ever since the publication of De Saussure's great work on the Alps, the subject of glaciers has claimed a considerable and increasing share of the attention of scientific writers. The gathering of the snow in the higher mountain regions, its conversion into solid ice, the inner structure and movements of glaciers, their ancient extension and erosive action on their rocky beds, the origin of crevasses, moraines, and many other attendant phenomena, have all been the subjects of discussion; and in the writings of De Saussure, Charpentier, Agassiz, and James Forbes, the charms of style and Bgraphic; 1kastration have invested these questions with. An interest felt far beyond the circle of purely. Scientific readers. The subject has, how ev'er, many bearings besides those relating to existing glaciers, and in the following pages I propose chiefly to confine myself to that part 0 of the history and antiquities of the glacier world the origin of which, though lost 1n the far backward and abysm of time, yet, in a. Geological sense, so little preceded our own day, that the larger contours of hill and valley as they yet stand were already in existence, and probably all the forms of mollusca now living even then inhabited the northern seas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glaciers of the Alps,& Mountaineering in 1861 It is not in my power to do justice to Tyndall's scientific discoveries, which lie for the most part outside the range of my studies; but having been honoured with his friendship for many years, it is a pleasure to me, - and alas, few now living are able to do so, - to speak of him as a man, of the stimulating and noble influence which he exercised over all who had the privilege of his friendship. More than forty years ago - in the summer of 1861 - I had the pleasure of spending a short holiday in Switzerland with Huxley and Tyndall, Tyndall and I ascended the Galenstock, and started with Benen (who afterwards lost his life on the Haut de Cry) up the Jungfrau, but were stopped by an accident to one of our porters, who fell into a deep crevasse, from which we had some difficulty in extricating him, as Tyndall has graphically described in his "Hours of Exercise in the Alps." Again in 1865 I spent a fortnight at Zermatt with him and Hirst just after the terrible catastrophe on the Matterhorn, searching, or rather intending to search, for the body of poor Lord Francis Douglas, which, however, the weather rendered impossible. On another occasion we went together to Naples to study an eruption of Vesuvius. Nearer home I had the pleasure of many short expeditions with him; we attended several British Associations together, and belonged to the X Club, which dined together once a month, and which comprised also Huxley, Hooker, Herbert Spencer, Spottiswoode, G. Busk, Hirst, and Frankland. These men were all pre-eminent in their own departments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glaciers of the Alps: Being a Narrative of Excursions and Ascents, an Account of the Origin and Phenomena of Glaciers and an Exposition of the Physical Principles to Which They Are Related IN the following work I have not attempted to mix Narrative and Science, believing that the mind once interested in the one, cannot with satisfaction pass abruptly to the other. The book is therefore divided into Two Parts: the first chiefly narrative, and the second chiefly scientific. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of Existing Glaciers It has been the common practice to treat the subject of glaciation as if all ice masses having inherent motion of whatever nature were governed by the same laws. Thus the most recent and authoritative work upon the subject has treated the glaciers of Greenland and Switzerland together. The aim of the present work has been rather to emphasize the wide differences in other than dimensional respects which separate such bodies, and to show that the law's which govern their nourishment and depletion, and their reaction with the lithosphere as well, are by no means identical. The broad line of cleavage is found to he between those glaciers which completely cover a considerable portion of the rock surface, and have the form of a flat dome or shield, and the remaining types. These latter glaciers being all restricted to maintain districts have been designated mountain glaciers, and they have been found to bear very simple relations to each other, dependent upon the measure of their nourishment and waste. Alimentation being in turn dependent upon climatic conditions, all are brought in order within the cycle of changes which correspond to a period of increasingly rigorous climate followed in turn by more genial conditions - the cycle of glaciation. Throughout the attempt has been to emphasize the broader physiographic elements of the problem and to show the relations to alimentation and depletion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parallel Roads of Glenroy: Their Origin and Relation to the Glacial Period and the Deluge In these unsatisfactory circumstances my paper was laid on the shelf, where it would probably have remained had not the appearance of Professor Prestwich's Monograph revived my interest in the ques tion. This distinguished geologist adopts the glacial-lake view as affording the most satisfactory solution of the problem, but suggests a somewhat different interpretation of the build of the barriers and the formation of the roads. According to his View the hills were covered with a coating, several feet thick of local angular fragments mixed with sand and clay, the product of the great ice sheet. But to explain the modus operandi, I had better cite the account given of the supposed formation of the middle road. On the bursting of the ice barrier in Glen Glaster the glacial lake necessarily fell to the level of the col at the head of that. Glen. As the lake fell rapidly, says the Professor, and exposed this detrital bank, the saturated mass of debris would part with its water.
