Download or read book The annual report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education, Children's Services and Skills 2010/11 written by Great Britain: Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ofsted today publishes the Annual Report 2010/11, drawing on over 31,000 inspection visits across the schools, early years, children's social care and learning and skills sectors in England. Launched by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector Miriam Rosen, this in-depth analysis provides an insight into the quality of those services for children and learners, what is working well and what needs to improve. The report highlights how an inadequate inspection judgement, whether for a children's home or a school, a college or a nursery, can be an important catalyst for change. For example, the total number of schools in a category of concern - that is judged to be in special measures or being given a notice to improve - reduced from 553 at the end of last year to 451 at the end of August 2011. Over a fifth of schools judged inadequate at their previous inspection were found to be good or better when inspected again this year. In addition, schools are now emerging from special measures faster than the previous year - after an average of 18 months rather than 20. In inspections of local authorities'; children's social care, where Ofsted completed the second full year of unannounced inspection of contact, referral and assessment arrangements, weaknesses identified the previous year had been addressed in the great majority of cases.

Book Synopsis Partnership Working to Support Special Educational Needs & Disabilities by : Rona Tutt
Download or read book Partnership Working to Support Special Educational Needs & Disabilities written by Rona Tutt and published by SAGE Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to achieve the best outcomes for all children and young people, schools must work in partnership with students, parents, other professionals and the wider community. In this changing landscape of education, the notion of the traditional school is fast disappearing. This book looks at what is possible in this exciting new world, and how some teachers and other professionals are putting into practice the best principles of multi-agency working. Finding innovative ways of supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in this context is more important than ever, as children are being diagnosed with increasingly complex needs. Those working with children need to be aware of the fresh opportunities that are opening up and which can help every individual to maximise their full potential. This book examines how partnership working affects children with SEND by considering: - the diversity of additional needs; - the role of specialist schools that have an SEN specialism; - partnership working between mainstream and special schools; - partnership working with groups of schools, including those that are co-located or federated; - the growth of academies and trust schools; - schools and other services working together; - the work of extended schools and children′s centres; - a wide range of other services for children, young people and families. Filled with case studies of effective practice from real schools and services, this book is a must-have for those looking at how to work together to achieve positive outcomes for all. Rona Tutt OBE is a Past President of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and works as a consultant, writer and researcher on all matters relating to education in general, and special educational needs and disabilities in particular.

Download or read book Child Protection and Child Welfare written by John Dixon and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Protection and Child Welfare draws on the knowledge of child protection experts and social care professionals to provide an authoritative international overview of child protection strategy and policy. Devoting particular attention to the role played by culture in determining child welfare issues and child protection responses, this book illustrates the impact of both long-term influences, such as the legacy of the caste system in India, and more recent global events, such as the development of international trade in Ghana and shrinking budgets in Italy on national approaches to supporting families and children. The international perspective aims to enhance our understanding of the range of possible approaches, encouraging researchers, policymakers and practitioners to think critically about current models, and providing insights for developing practice. Book Synopsis White Lies: Racism, Education and Critical Race Theory by : David Gillborn
Download or read book White Lies: Racism, Education and Critical Race Theory written by David Gillborn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unpacking Critical Race Theory (CRT) and exploring why it has become a focus in politics across the US and the UK, White Lies uses CRT to expose the systemic racism that shapes education. It charts the coordinated campaigns – involving think tanks, mainstream media and politicians – that have tried to silence antiracism in the wake of George Floyd's murder and 'Black Lives Matter'. Each chapter is devoted to exposing a key ‘white lie’ by examining the evidence that shows how the interests of white people continue to occupy centre stage and block movement towards a more equitable education for all. Gillborn establishes how the public debates, shaped by misinformation and 'white lies', sustain race inequity and portray antiracism as a threat to freedom and justice. Key controversies are dissected and debunked, including: the extensive and coordinated anti-CRT campaigns in the US and the UK; the use of racial gaslighting to undermine claims to social justice; how multiple forms of intimidation are used to silence antiracist teaching and protest; the inaccurate portrayal of the white working class as race victims; and how cruelty, in policy, aims to unify whites and demonize minorities. By avoiding unnecessary jargon to make complex debates accessible to a wide audience, this book is ideal reading for anyone studying CRT or interested in the topic of contemporary educational equality.
Book Synopsis Financial Management in the Department for Children, Schools and Families by : Great Britain. National Audit Office
Download or read book Financial Management in the Department for Children, Schools and Families written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Children, Schools and Families has made progress in improving its financial management, with strong commitment at senior management and board level. The Department's ability to reach a high standard of financial management depends partly on successful working with local authorities, other partner organisations, and the schools themselves. It does, however, face specific challenges, including the need for better strategic management of its large capital programme, and to encourage better financial management in schools. The Department has built up a large capital underspend, which increased from £1.9 billion at 31 March 2008 to around £2.4 billion at the end of March 2009. Its capital expenditure programme will need to be carefully managed given the history of underspending and the challenge of bringing forward £924 million of expenditure from 2010-11 to 2009-10 as part of the Government's fiscal stimulus. At March 2008, schools in England had a net cumulative surplus of £1.9 billion. Only 1 in 5 local authorities reduced their total net school surplus in 2007-08. Local authorities are accountable for school spending and the Department should encourage them to redistribute excessive uncommitted surpluses in line with local needs. The Department was, in 2007, one of three departments which had not implemented in-year accruals accounting systems, which would help to improve the accuracy of financial forecasting and reporting. The planned introduction of a shared services arrangement for finance with procurement and personnel support should also help improve financial management and lead to efficiencies.
Book Synopsis Partnering for success by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book Partnering for success written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 14-19 education reforms planned to be implemented by 2013, the main aims are: to raise the participation of young people in education; to raise the educational attainment of young people. Central to these objectives are a new set of qualifications, the Diplomas, which aim to merge applied and general learning, providing alternative pathways for 14-19 year olds into further education, higher education and employment. The National Audit Office has set out a number of conclusions and recommendations, including: that the diplomas need to be flexible, with an appropriate balance across general and applied education; that the new Diplomas need to gain credible acceptance with employers and higher education institutions; that there should be full co-operation and involvement of partnerships between local authorities, schools, employers, as well as the Learning and Skills Council and Education Business Link Organisations; the importance of good quality information, advice and guidance on the courses to study; effective use of technology-based products, which the Department for Education and Skills should facilitate through partnerships that develop tools to support the integration of young peoples studies and their career aspirations.
Book Synopsis The Transformation of Children's Services by : Joan Forbes
Download or read book The Transformation of Children's Services written by Joan Forbes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we imagine different ways of working together to secure better outcomes for children and families? What are the complex issues that underlie the apparently simple call for ‘joined-up’ services? Children’s services in many countries around the world are being transformed as part of the call for ‘joined-up working for joined-up solutions’. Social, health and educational policy discourses are driven by the idea that ‘effective’ inter/professional, interagency collaboration is crucial in determining whether service delivery to children and families will succeed or fail. However, the rapid turn from previous inter/professional practices of liaison, consultancy, cooperation and collaboration to more radical and wholescale service integration and sector transformation has not been accompanied either by a well considered research agenda of hard questions nor close scrutiny of its effects and consequences. The book asks a series of searching and challenging questions: What are the complex issues involved in children’s sector transformation for all those involved – young people, practitioners, leaders and managers, policy makers? How can the ‘silos’ in which professionals have traditionally been prepared for practice be broken down? What are the orthodoxies that surround ‘joined-up’ working and in what ways should they be challenged? Written by authors from across the wide range of professional, policy and disciplinary groups involved in this new cross-cutting area of policy and practice, this book provides a critical analysis of the complexities of children’s services transformations. The research in this collection addresses the range of discursive, policy and organizational developments associated with the transformation of children’s services, providing an important and timely analysis of their complexities and is essential reading for all those working in the complex spaces of children’s services.
