Book excerpt: In this auto-ethnography, which is a contribution to a form of writing only recently adopted by historians, the author provides an exposition of how, since 1957, he has been located in education currents flowing through various exotic lands. He addresses how, in participating in that flow, he has been influenced by historical events in which he participated, along with broader societal events reaching back over 150 years. As such, this book is illuminative on education developments in education in Ireland and internationally over the last 70 years in relation to a longer time-scale. It commences with an account of the author’s early life and schooling in County Waterford, Ireland, addresses his undergraduate years in London and Limerick, and reflects on 13 years of school teaching and studying for postgraduate degrees at Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. Book Synopsis Richard Mulcahy by : Pádraig Ó Caoimh
Download or read book Richard Mulcahy written by Pádraig Ó Caoimh and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief of Staff of the IRA, successor to Michael Collins as Commander in Chief of the National Army, founding member of Cumann na nGaedheal and later leader of Fine Gael: Richard Mulcahy was a leading figure in revolutionary Ireland and the new Irish State. But who was the enigmatic man behind the myth? Conspiratorial IRB nationalist; stubborn military tribune; pragmatic, political officeholder; or a fascinating combination of these and other traits? In Richard Mulcahy: From the Politics of War to the Politics of Peace, Pádraig Ó Caoimh expertly explores the awkward, often competitive, relationships Mulcahy had with Brugha, Cosgrave, de Valera, O’Higgins and Stack, and investigates the forging of the Irish national army out of the furnace of change brought about by the rise of militarism, a mismanaged rebellion and two wars, one of liberation, the other of brothers. This long overdue new biography also reveals the ambiguous role of the IRB, and the strategically important military and political executive positions that Mulcahy occupied during the post-rebellion, army-building and state-building phase of 1917–24. This extensively researched new study of Richard Mulcahy and the struggle for supremacy concerning the post-revolutionary government-army relationship is a vital contribution to understanding Ireland’s revolutionary past.

Book Synopsis Ascendancy Women and Elementary Education in Ireland by : Eilís O'Sullivan
Download or read book Ascendancy Women and Elementary Education in Ireland written by Eilís O'Sullivan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the lives of six female members of the Irish Ascendancy, and describes their involvement with educational provision for poor children in Ireland at the end of the long eighteenth century. It argues that these women were moved by empathy and by a sense of duty, and that they were motivated by political considerations, pragmatism and, especially, religious belief. The book highlights the women’s agency and locates their contribution in international and literary contexts; and by exploring sources and evidence not previously considered, it generates an enhanced understanding of Ascendancy women’s involvement with the provision of elementary education for poor Irish children. This book will appeal to scholars and researchers in the fields of Education and History of Education. It will also have broad appeal for those interested in Gender and Women’s Studies, in Georgian Ireland and in the history of Ascendancy families and estates.
Book Synopsis Escaping Paternalism by : Mario J. Rizzo
Download or read book Escaping Paternalism written by Mario J. Rizzo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burgeoning field of behavioral economics has produced a new set of justifications for paternalism. This book challenges behavioral paternalism on multiple levels, from the abstract and conceptual to the pragmatic and applied. Behavioral paternalism relies on a needlessly restrictive definition of rational behavior. It neglects nonstandard preferences, experimentation, and self-discovery. It relies on behavioral research that is often incomplete and unreliable. It demands a level of knowledge from policymakers that they cannot reasonably obtain. It assumes a political process largely immune to the effects of ignorance, irrationality, and the influence of special interests and moralists. Overall, behavioral paternalism underestimates the capacity of people to solve their own problems, while overestimating the ability of experts and policymakers to design beneficial interventions. The authors argue instead for a more inclusive theory of rationality in economic policymaking.

Book Synopsis The History of Bethlem by : Jonathan Andrews
Download or read book The History of Bethlem written by Jonathan Andrews and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethlem Hospital, popularly known as "Bedlam", is a unique institution. Now seven hundred and fifty years old, it has been continuously involved in the care of the mentally ill in London since at least the 1400s. As such it has a strong claim to be the oldest foundation in Europe with an unbroken history of sheltering and treating the mentally disturbed. During this time, Bethlem has transcended locality to become not only a national and international institution, but in many ways, a cultural and literary myth. The History of Bethlem is a scholarly history of this key establishment by distinguished authors, including Asa Briggs and Roy Porter. Based upon extensive research of the hospital's archives, the book looks at Bethlem's role within the caring institutions of London and Britain, and provides a long overdue re-evaluation of its place in the history of psychiatry.
