Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

Book excerpt: This book is the first to examine in depth the contributions of major British authors such as W. H. Auden and E. M. Forster, as critics and librettists, to the rise of British opera in the twentieth century. The perceived literary values of British authors, as much as the musical innovations of British composers, informed the aesthetic development of British opera. Indeed, British opera emerged as a simultaneously literary and musical project. Too often, operatic adaptations are compared superficially to their original sources. This is a particular problem for British opera, which has become increasingly defined artistically by the literary sophistication of its narrative sources. The resulting collaborations between literary figures and composers have crucial implications for the development of both opera and literature. Twentieth-Century British Authors and the Rise of Opera in Britain reveals the importance of this literary involvement in operatic adaptation to literature and literary studies, to music and musicology, and to cultural and theoretical studies.

Book excerpt: The turn of the 20th century was a time of great change in Britain. The empire saw its global influence waning and its traditional social structures challenged. There was a growing weariness of industrialism and a desire to rediscover tradition and the roots of English heritage. A new interest in English folk song and dance inspired art music, which many believed was seeing a renaissance after a period of stagnation since the 18th century. This book focuses on the lives of seven composers--Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Ernest Moeran, George Butterworth, Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock), Gerald Finzi and Percy Grainger--whose work was influenced by folk songs and early music. Each chapter provides an historical background and tells the fascinating story of a musical life.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this essay is to explore and examine the value of Philip Heseltine's art song and to provide a contextual analysis for performance related to symptoms of mental illness. Currently, Heseltine's repertoire is not considered a primary source for songs in English. This essay also provides insight as to reasons why Heseltine's repertoire is less widely performed (or considered) than others. Heseltine's art songs are discussed, along with characteristics relevant to Heseltine's compositional style. Additional discussion includes dissection of Heseltine's personality and behavior, illustrated in personal correspondence and other biographical materials. A comparison is made between the symptoms of mental illness Heseltine may have experienced and his compositional style. Furthermore, pertinent facts of the relation of creativity and genius are presented. Discussing and comparing Heseltine's body of vocal solo song with his erratic personality, behaviors, and unorthodox methods of thought will provide musicians and musicologists with a greater understanding of who Philip Heseltine was. It is this understanding that will affect the study and performance of his music.

Book excerpt: Peter Warlock is one of the several pseudonyms adopted by the critic, researcher, editor and composer, Phillip Heseltine (1894-1930). Previous studies of Warlock have almost all been exclusively biographical, using the pseudonyms as evidence of a split personality and applying this and the other controversial aspects of his life-style to an evaluation of his music.
