Book excerpt: It's the second decade of 21st Century Earth's 29th Configuration. Zack Carver, an alcoholic archeologist, discovers a craft, apparently built for flight, dating back amillion millennia. Carver teams up with Leslee Myles, an attorney, and a stunning, alien humanoid to battle the most malevolent forces in the universe, including bio-terrorists, shadow-military operatives, a renegade administration and Dax Wolf, a sociopath genius. However, the trio'smost daunting challenge is to outfox the Custodians-supreme beings who were born out of galactic cataclysm and whose sole purpose is to find civilizations that have reached their doom-point and then delete all evidence of their existence so that an entirely new life-form may emerge. As with Earth's previous 28 Configurations, the current 29th is rushing toward self-annihilation. Can Zack, Leslee and their otherworldly companion prevent the Custodians from activating the Null Quotient? Is it possible for the three heroes to convince the Nine Custodians to spare their blue-and-green planet and not revert it to the stardust that is the essential ingredient of the primordial slime?Philip Margo is a founding member of The Tokens, the vocal group that made the classic recording of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Mr. Margo has worked as a record producer with eleven gold records to his credit, is a songwriter, television producer and writer and a personal manager for celebrities. He is currently writing the sequel to his novel and lives in Beverly Hills, California with his wife of forty-three years, Abbie. They are the proud parents and grandparents of three children and seven grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose here a study of ‘semiexact’ and ‘homological' categories as a basis for a generalised homological algebra. Our aim is to extend the homological notions to deeply non-abelian situations, where satellites and spectral sequences can still be studied. This is a sequel of a book on ‘Homological Algebra, The interplay of homology with distributive lattices and orthodox semigroups’, published by the same Editor, but can be read independently of the latter. The previous book develops homological algebra in p-exact categories, i.e. exact categories in the sense of Puppe and Mitchell — a moderate generalisation of abelian categories that is nevertheless crucial for a theory of ‘coherence’ and ‘universal models’ of (even abelian) homological algebra. The main motivation of the present, much wider extension is that the exact sequences or spectral sequences produced by unstable homotopy theory cannot be dealt with in the previous framework. According to the present definitions, a semiexact category is a category equipped with an ideal of ‘null’ morphisms and provided with kernels and cokernels with respect to this ideal. A homological category satisfies some further conditions that allow the construction of subquotients and induced morphisms, in particular the homology of a chain complex or the spectral sequence of an exact couple. Extending abelian categories, and also the p-exact ones, these notions include the usual domains of homology and homotopy theories, e.g. the category of ‘pairs’ of topological spaces or groups; they also include their codomains, since the sequences of homotopy ‘objects’ for a pair of pointed spaces or a fibration can be viewed as exact sequences in a homological category, whose objects are actions of groups on pointed sets. Book excerpt: The developments over a thirty-year time span in the study of power, especially voting power, are traced in this book, which provides an up-to-date overview of applications of n-person game theory to the study of power in multimember bodies. Other theories that shed light on power distribution (e.g. aggregation theory) are treated as well. The book revisits the themes discussed in the well-known 1982 publication "Power, Voting and Voting Power" (edited by Manfred J. Holler). Thirty years later this essential topic has been taken up again and many of the authors from its predecessor participate here again in discussing the state-of-the-art, demonstrating the achievements of three decades of intensive research, and pointing the way to key issues for future work.

Book excerpt: In the midst of climate change, responsible business practices and ecological modernization become essential tools for the promotion of sustainability. Due to the current level of demand for eco-friendly products and services, there is a need for green training and green human resource development to support green creativity and eco-innovation for sustainability. By incorporating green initiatives into human resource practices, organizations can maintain a positive impact on the environment. With a full understanding of sustainable business practices, positive impacts on the environmental management field become easier to produce. Human Resource Management Practices for Promoting Sustainability is a pivotal reference source that explores the incorporation of green initiatives into all aspects of human resource management practices in a variety of industries. The book delivers a discussion on green human capital, collective green intelligence, and competencies that are essential to cope with the challenges in Industry 4.0. It also provides a basis for green recruitment and selection processes as a way of promoting pro-environmental behavior in the labor markets. While highlighting a broad range of topics including employee relations, knowledge management, and recruitment, this book is ideally designed for executives, entrepreneurs, human resource managers, academicians, researchers, and students. The book is also suitable for conventional and corporate universities looking to meet sustainable development goals as well as policymakers as it provides a guideline in designing and implementing green creativity and eco-innovation based on a wide range of global issues confronting sustainability in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers an original view on channel coding, based on a unitary approach to block and convolutional codes for error correction. It presents both new concepts and new families of codes. For example, lengthened and modified lengthened cyclic codes are introduced as a bridge towards time-invariant convolutional codes and their extension to time-varying versions. The novel families of codes include turbo codes and low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, the features of which are justified from the structural properties of the component codes. Design procedures for regular LDPC codes are proposed, supported by the presented theory. Quasi-cyclic LDPC codes, in block or convolutional form, represent one of the most original contributions of the book. The use of more than 100 examples allows the reader gradually to gain an understanding of the theory, and the provision of a list of more than 150 definitions, indexed at the end of the book, permits rapid location of sought information.

Book excerpt: This book presents a complete and accurate study of algebraic circuits, digital circuits whose performance can be associated with any algebraic structure. The authors distinguish between basic algebraic circuits, such as Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSRs) and cellular automata and algebraic circuits, such as finite fields or Galois fields. The book includes a comprehensive review of representation systems, of arithmetic circuits implementing basic and more complex operations and of the residue number systems (RNS). It presents a study of basic algebraic circuits such as LFSRs and cellular automata as well as a study of circuits related to Galois fields, including two real cryptographic applications of Galois fields.
