Book excerpt: While attempts to solve the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) numerically in the low energy limit are increasingly successful ("lattice QCD"), Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChEFT) remains a potent alternative method for deriving nuclear force potentials. Previous calculations within framework of ChEFT up to 4th order (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, N3LO) show generally good agreement with experiment. However, some persistent problems with N3LO potentials as well as the question of order-by-order convergence of ChEFT require calculations up to higher orders. In this work, I present calculations of pion exchange contributions to nucleon-nucleon potentials up to 5th and 6th order (N4LO and N5LO). N4LO calculations solve some of the previous persistent problems and improve the agreement with nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering experiments in peripheral partial waves. N5LO contributions further improve the agreement with experiment and also turn out to be smaller compared to N4LO, thus showing the trend for convergence. Finally, I present the full NN potential at N4LO, which shows excellent agreement with experimental data in all partial waves and can be applied further in nuclear structure calculations. Since a modified power counting scheme is used for N4LO potential, full NN potentials at NLO, NNLO and N3LO are also recalculated using the modified scheme. This allows for systematic truncation error estimation when applying potentials to calculations of nuclear structure and reactions.

Book Synopsis The Nucleon-nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many-body Problem by : Gerald E. Brown
Download or read book The Nucleon-nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many-body Problem written by Gerald E. Brown and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have been solved, and we have an effective field theory using a phenomenological interaction pioneered by Achim Schwenk and Scott Bogner, which is nearly universally accepted as a unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental data to date. This understanding is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the different 'steps along the way', starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful masterly improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, the off-shell effects that bedeviled Bethe's work — which had resulted in the 1963 Reference Spectrum Method — were treated relatively accurately by introducing an energy gap between initial bound states and an intermediate state. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective field theory. Later, the introduction of 'Brown-Rho scaling' deepened understanding of saturation in the many-body system and fed directly into recent work on carbon-14 dating.
Book Synopsis Four-nucleon Force in Chiral Effective Field Theory by :
Download or read book Four-nucleon Force in Chiral Effective Field Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We derive the leading contribution to the four--nucleon force within the framework of chiral effective field theory. It is governed by the exchange of pions and the lowest--order nucleon--nucleon contact interaction and includes effects due to the nonlinear pion--nucleon couplings and the pion self interactions constrained by the chiral symmetry of QCD. The resulting 4NF does not contain any unknown parameters and can be tested in future few--and many--nucleon studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past three decades, it has been demonstrated that chiral effective field theory (EFT) represents a powerful tool to deal with hadronic interactions at low energy in a systematic and model-independent way. Within the last decade, precision nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials based upon chiral EFT have been constructed. Most of these potentials have been represented in momentum-space. However, there are some important applications in nuclear physics for which a representation of the NN potential in position space is preferred. Therefore, in this thesis, a NN potential is constructed that is local and given in position space in a relatively simple form. In terms of the chiral expansion, we advance to next-to-next-to-leading order and achieve accuracy that is superior to similar potentials constructed by other researchers. Our potential will serve as an excellent starting point for ab initio few- and many- body calculations in nuclear physics.
Book Synopsis Finite-cutoff Renormalization of the Chiral Nucleon-nucleon Interaction by : Ehab Marji
Download or read book Finite-cutoff Renormalization of the Chiral Nucleon-nucleon Interaction written by Ehab Marji and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiral effective field theory is a powerful tool in dealing with nuclear forces in both a systematic and model-independent way. In the recent past, two-, three-, and four-nucleon forces up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3 LO) have been derived and and applied fairly successfully in nuclear few- and many-body systems. However, an important issue has been neglected in all of this work: Non-perturbative renormalization, which is crucial to prove the model-independence of the theory. In this thesis, I have have investigated systematically the renormalization of chiral neutron-proton (np) potentials at order NLO and NNLO applying Weinberg counting for the counter terms (NN contact terms). I show that the reproduction of the np data at these energies is generally poor at NLO, while at NNLO the [chi] 2 /datum assumes acceptable values (a clear demonstration of order-by-order improvement). Moreover, at NNLO one observes "plateaus" of constant low [chi]2 for cutoff parameters ranging from 450 to 850 MeV. This may be perceived as cutoff independence (and, thus, successful renormalization) in the relevant range of cutoff parameters. Preliminary results for N3 LO will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have largely been solved, and we now have an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, pioneered in a renormalization group formalism by several of us at Stony Brook and our colleagues at Naples, which is nearly universally accepted as the unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental information to date. Our present understanding of these issues is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the ‘steps along the way’, starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, microscopic methods for nuclear structure calculations using the Brueckner G-matrix, and later low-momentum nucleon interactions, were developed and applied. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective theory that allowed the description of nuclear properties directly from the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction. Later, the addition of ‘Brown-Rho scaling’ to the one-boson-exchange model deepened the understanding of nuclear matter saturation, carbon-14 dating and the structure of neutron stars.

Book Synopsis Chiral Symmetry and the Nucleon-nucleon Interaction by :
Download or read book Chiral Symmetry and the Nucleon-nucleon Interaction written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review how nuclear forces emerge from low-energy quantum chromodynamics (QCD) via chiral effective field theory (EFT). During the past two decades, this approach has evolved into a powerful tool to derive nuclear two- and many-body forces in a systematic and model-independent way. We then focus on the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction and show in detail how, governed by chiral symmetry, the long- and intermediate-range of the NN potential builds up order by order. We proceed up to sixth order in small momenta, where convergence is achieved. Lastly, the final result allows for a full assessment of the validity of the chiral EFT approach to the NN interaction.
Book Synopsis NN and 3N Interactions by : Leonid Blokhintsev
Download or read book NN and 3N Interactions written by Leonid Blokhintsev and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the nucleon-nucleon interaction has a long history, going back to 1932 (just after the discovery of the neutron by James Chadwick). The force is responsible for binding protons and neutrons into atomic nuclei but, unlike the cases of Coulomb or Newtonian gravitational laws, the form of the fundamental NN strong interaction and its constants are a priori unknown. The subject is nevertheless important because the energy associated with the binding of protons and neutrons to form atomic nuclei is the energy used in nuclear power. The authors of the present volume deliver accounts of current research on various aspects of the forces between two or more nucleons and how they relate to experiments in nuclear physics. General overviews, illustrated by appropriate examples, are given both the theoretical and experimental knowledge of nuclear physics that are prerequisites for the understanding of the strong interaction. Two- and three-nucleon forces are among the topics that are addressed and discussed including, for example, how nuclear forces emerge from low-energy QCD via chiral effective field theory. A comprehensive overview is presented of realistic free nucleon-nucleon interactions and also two-nucleon dynamics in a nuclear medium.
