Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graphical method for hand calculation of ship shielding factors is developed and presented. The method utilizes a piece-by-piece accounting for each slab of shielding material and a time-dependent gamma-ray pseudo-spectrum consisting of five energies. Sets of graphs for deck-deposit and transit radiation shielding calculations are presented as two appendixes printed under separate covers. Results of the calculations are usually within a factor of two of correct values when simplifying approximations are used, and within #+50% when very careful, detailed calculations are made.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of the attenuation of neutrons and gamma rays in shields can be performed by several techniques, the best technique for a particular problem depending on the type of problem to be solved and the degree of accuracy required. This chapter of the Handbook surveys the calculational methods used most frequently and provides summaries of digital computer codes based on the various methods. The methods covered are those of spherical harmonics, discrete ordinates, moments, Monte Carlo, diffusion theory, invariant imbedding, and kernels, plus a method which combines a removal kernel with diffusion theory. Except for the invariant imbedding method, all these techniques are either approximate solutions to the well-known Boltzmann equation or are based on kernels obtained from solutions to the equation. A discussion of the Boltzmann equation is also included in the chapter. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling and computations in electromagnetics is a quite fast-growing research area. The recent interest in this field is caused by the increased demand for designing complex microwave components, modeling electromagnetic materials, and rapid increase in computational power for calculation of complex electromagnetic problems. The first part of this book is devoted to the advances in the analysis techniques such as method of moments, finite-difference time- domain method, boundary perturbation theory, Fourier analysis, mode-matching method, and analysis based on circuit theory. These techniques are considered with regard to several challenging technological applications such as those related to electrically large devices, scattering in layered structures, photonic crystals, and artificial materials. The second part of the book deals with waveguides, transmission lines and transitions. This includes microstrip lines (MSL), slot waveguides, substrate integrated waveguides (SIW), vertical transmission lines in multilayer media as well as MSL to SIW and MSL to slot line transitions.

Book excerpt: The book discusses one of the major challenges in agriculture which is delivery of cultivate produce to the end consumers with best possible price and quality. Currently all over the world, it is found that around 50% of the farm produce never reaches the end consumer due to wastage and suboptimal prices. The authors present solutions to reduce the transport cost, predictability of prices on the past data analytics and the current market conditions, and number of middle hops and agents between the farmer and the end consumer using IoT-based solutions. Again, the demand by consumption of agricultural products could be predicted quantitatively; however, the variation of harvest and production by the change of farm's cultivated area, weather change, disease and insect damage, etc., could be difficult to be predicted, so that the supply and demand of agricultural products has not been controlled properly. To overcome, this edited book designed the IoT-based monitoring system to analyze crop environment and the method to improve the efficiency of decision making by analyzing harvest statistics. The book is also useful for academicians working in the areas of climate changes.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the medical importance of and increasing global interest in herbal medicines, herbal health products, herbal pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food supplements, herbal cosmetics, etc. It also addresses various issues that are hampering the advancement of Indian herbal medicine around the globe; these include quality concerns and quality control, pharmacovigilance, scientific investigation and validation, IPR and biopiracy, and the challenge that various indigenous systems of medicine are at risk of being lost. The book also explores the role of traditional medicine in providing new functional leads and modern approaches that can offer elegant strategies for facilitating the drug discovery process. The book also provides in-depth information on various traditional medicinal systems in India and discusses their medical importance. India has a very long history of safely using many herbal drugs. Folk medicine is also a key source of medical knowledge and plays a vital role in maintaining health in rural and remote areas. Despite its importance, this form of medicine largely remains under-investigated. Out of all the traditional medicinal systems used worldwide, Indian traditional medicine holds a unique position, as it has continued to deliver healthcare throughout the Asian subcontinent since ancient times. In addition, traditional medicine has been used to derive advanced techniques and investigate many modern drugs. Given the scope of its coverage, the book offers a valuable resource for scientists and researchers exploring traditional and herbal medicine, as well as graduate students in courses on traditional medicine, herbal medicine and pharmacy.

The book comprises a rigorously chosen selection of papers from a conference organized by the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP), an organization that promotes enhancement of the quality of physics teaching and learning at all educational levels and in all contexts. The topics covered are wide ranging. Examples include the roles of open inquiry experiments and advanced lab experiments, the value of computer modeling in physics teaching, the use of web-based interactive video activities and smartphones in the lab, the effectiveness of low-cost experiments, and assessment for learning through experimentation. The presented research-based proposals will be of interest to all who seek to improve physics teaching and learning.
