Book Synopsis The Jews in Sicily, Volume 15 Notaries of Trapani by : Shlomo Simonsohn
Download or read book The Jews in Sicily, Volume 15 Notaries of Trapani written by Shlomo Simonsohn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Documentary History of the Jews in Italy is the seventh of the second series, illustrating the history of the Jews in Sicily based on notarial and court records. It is the sequel to the eight volumes of the first series. Notarial deeds drawn up by public notaries in Palermo and elsewhere and cases brought before the Pretorian Court in Palermo present a kaleidoscopic picture of the private lives of the Jews of Sicily during the last three centuries of their presence on the island. They illustrate the economic, social and religious history of the Jewish minority and the relations with the Christian majority. Much information is provided on trade and commerce, crafts and professions, religious and family life. Some light is thrown also on the internal life of the communities, particularly the larger ones, including organization and institutions, the synagogue, education, customs and traditions. Although the surviving legal deeds present only a fraction of the total drawn up in those years, they are copious and abundant. Over 30,000 documents of this group were selected for publication, most appearing here for the first time. While some documents are discussed at length, the majority are only presented in summary form. The volume is provided with additional bibliography and indexes, while the introduction will appear at the end of the series. "Simonshon’s last volume confirms once again the importance of his documentary series for students of Italian, Sicilian and Jewish matters, from late antiquity to early modern times. The coherence of both modes of collection and organization of materials, together with copious amount of data and suggestions for further study, continue to spoil scholars and researches who, in years, have come to immensely appreciate the convenience and richness of this comprehensive collection." Book Synopsis Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence by : Sharon T. Strocchia
Download or read book Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence written by Sharon T. Strocchia and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2009-10-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of Renaissance Florentine convents and their influence on the city’s social, economic, and political history. The 15th century was a time of dramatic and decisive change for nuns and nunneries in Florence. That century saw the city’s convents evolve from small, semiautonomous communities to large civic institutions. By 1552, roughly one in eight Florentine women lived in a religious community. Historian Sharon T. Strocchia analyzes this stunning growth of female monasticism, revealing the important roles these women and institutions played in the social, economic, and political history of Renaissance Florence. It became common practice during this time for unmarried women in elite society to enter convents. This unprecedented concentration of highly educated and well-connected women transformed convents into sites of great patronage and social and political influence. As their economic influence also grew, convents found new ways of supporting themselves; they established schools, produced manuscripts, and manufactured textiles. Using previously untapped archival materials, Strocchia shows how convents shaped one of the principal cities of Renaissance Europe. She demonstrates the importance of nuns and nunneries to the booming Florentine textile industry and shows the contributions that ordinary nuns made to Florentine life in their roles as scribes, stewards, artisans, teachers, and community leaders. In doing so, Strocchia argues that the ideals and institutions that defined Florence were influenced in great part by the city’s powerful female monastics. Winner, Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize, American Catholic Historical Association “Strocchia examines the complex interrelationships between Florentine nuns and the laity, the secular government, and the religious hierarchy. The author skillfully analyzes extensive archival and printed sources.” —Choice

This book was released on 1975-06-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic survey of fundamental statements of Islamic and Near Eastern law that includes selections from the writings of classic Islamic scholars, contemporary works on legal theory, and modern Middle Eastern codes. No other accessible work brings together so many useful materials on the development of Islamic law, as does this volume based on translations from a variety of languages and numerous sources, all of which are identified. Because of the important role which law plays in Islamic culture, some acquaintance with legal developments is indispensible if one is to gain a rounded picture of Islamic culture.
