Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Briton, Vol. 1 of 2: Revised and Corrected by the Author; Illustrated With Explanatory Notes, and a Copious Index of Names and Characters Under the government of a ST una'r, which has been (0 fatal to england, the molt daring encroachments have been made on the favourite liberties of the eople, and the freedom of the prefs has been openly violated. Even a Licenjer of the ptefs has been appointed. No: thi but the vilelt miniflerial tralh, and falfehoods fabri cat by a wicked party, had then the fanaion of this tool of power; nor of confequence could any produc tion, breathing the fpirit of liberty, have a chance of be ing ulhered to light. The imprimarur of the minifier was fcarcely ever given, but to com fitions equally dif graceful to letters and humanity. Do not however re collet'ft that any of thefe hirelings have ventured, as the Barron of lafl Saturday has done, magnificently to dif play the rqyal arms at the head of their papers. Does this author mean to intimidate P or is it to infinuate that this new paper comes forth, like the Gaza-me, 6] ay Merit), and that he is fighting Under the minit'terial ban ner? All Oppofition therefore to him according to this idea, is to be confidered as an indignity offered to the ad minii'tration, and an affront to the higher powers, who may be fuppofed to protect, perhaps to pay him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effeminate Years: Literature, Politics, and Aesthetics in Mid-Eighteenth-Century Britain investigates the gendered, eroticized, and xenophobic ways in which the controversies in the 1760s surrounding the political figure John Wilkes (1725-97) legitimated some men as political subjects, while forcefully excluding others on the basis of their perceived effeminacy or foreignness. However, this book is not a literary analysis of the Wilkes affair in the 1760s, nor is it a linear account of Wilkes’s political career. Instead, Effeminate Years examines the cultural crisis of effeminacy that made Wilkes’s politicking so appealing. The central theoretical problem that this study addresses is the argument about what is and is not political: where does individual autonomy begin and end? Addressing this question, Kavanagh traces the shaping influence of the discourse of effeminacy in the literature that was generated by Wilkes’s legal and sexual scandals, while, at the same time, he also reads Wilkes’s spectacular drumming up of support as a timely exploitation of the broader cultural crisis of effeminacy during the mid century in Britain. The book begins with the scandals and agitations surrounding Wilkes, and ends with readings of Edmund Burke’s (1729-1797) earliest political writings, which envisage political community—a vision, that Kavanagh argues, is influenced by Wilkes and the effeminate years of the 1760s. Throughout, Kavanagh shows how interlocutors in the political and cultural debates of the mid-eighteenth-century period in Britain, such as Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) and Arthur Murphy (1727-1805), attempt to resolve the problem of effeminate excess. In part, the resolution for Wilkes and Charles Churchill (1731-1764) was to shunt effeminacy onto the sexually non-normative. On the other hand, Burke, in his aesthetic theorization of the beautiful privileges the socially constitutive affects of feeling effeminate. Through an analysis of poetry, fiction, social and economic pamphlets, aesthetic treatises, journalism and correspondences, placed within the latest queer historiography, Kavanagh demonstrates that the mid-century effeminacy crisis served to re-conceive male heterosexuality as the very mark of political legitimacy. Overall, Effeminate Years explores the development of modern ideas of masculinity and the political subject, which are still the basis of debate and argument in our own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection presents a selection of essays on the history of Irish masculinities. Beginning with representations of masculinity in eighteenth-century drama, economics, and satire, and concluding with work on the politics of masculinity post Good-Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, the collection advances the importance of masculinities in our understanding of Irish history and historiography. Using a variety of approaches, including literary and legal theory as well as cultural, political and local histories, this collection illuminates the differing forms, roles, and representations of Irish masculinities. Themes include the politicisation of Irishmen in both the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland; muscular manliness in the Irish Diaspora; Orangewomen and political agency; the disruptive possibility of the rural bachelor; and aspirational constructions of boyhood. Several essays explore how masculinity is constructed and performed by women, thus emphasizing the necessity of differentiating masculinity from maleness. These essays demonstrate the value of gender and masculinities for historical research and the transformative potential of these concepts in how we envision Ireland’s past, present, and future.
