Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel, "The Non-Statistical Man" is by yet another great science fiction craftsman, Raymond F. Jones. Was it possible there could be human intuition in a pill? Charles Bascomb was a man of precise logic--not too surprising he pushed facts and figures for a big insurance company. Every thought he had, every action he took, was based on his steadfast, nearly religious belief in the accuracy of numbers and statistics. But something was amiss. How was it possible that a select group of people seemed to have a power of intuition greater than the essence of pure logic itself? How was it possible that, with nothing more than a hunch to go on, they all seemed to have the foresight of knowing the exact moment in time when they should purchase an insurance policy? It was a maddening riddle for a man who had spent his whole life anchored in reason, cause, and effect. Soon this baffling mystery would lead to an eccentric doctor and his little bottles of multi-colored pills. The second novel is an unusual tale of interplanetary intrigue, "The Mission From Mars" by Rick Conroy. It was a weapon to end all wars! The Martians were very concerned about Earth. They were worried that the destructive tendencies of their planetary neighbor might someday reach across the void and threaten the red planet itself. And now the Earthlings were on the brink of space travel with the development of a rocket ship in Nevada's high desert. It would be easier to simply eliminate the entire human race. A fast-acting worldwide virus would do the trick. But there was one Martian who thought differently. He had faith in the human race, even if the Martian hierarchy did not. So the rulers of Mars gave humanity a final chance. And the fate of all Earthmen lay in the hands of two Martians who sped across the void in an ancient spacecraft toward Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949 the famous German rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun wrote a science-fiction manuscript based on a trip to Mars. This was more than just a fictional story. It was an actual proposal to send an expedition to Mars. Dr. Wernher von Braun worked out in great detail all the technical requirements for this Mars proposal. He worked out the orbits the space craft would have to follow to reach Mars and how long it would take. He also worked out how many rockets and space ships and crew would be required for this operation. His proposal, because that is what it really was, provided a great amount of scientific and technical information not available anywhere else. For example, did you know that the moon rotates around the Earth at right angles to the way that the Earth rotates around the sun? Did you know the problems this causes for the tides in the ocean? These little known scientific facts and technical details are all in this book but there is much more. Mars rotates around the sun in almost the same plane that the Earth rotates around the sun, but there is a difference has to be accounted for. Then there is the question of radio communications between Mars, the space ship and Earth. Mars is furthest away from Earth at the point where they are on opposite sides of the sun. One would assume that they are too far away from each other to communicate. But we now know that this is not true. A radio transmission can even pass right through Jupiter and reach Pluto and then go on into deeper space. This book anticipates problems that have subsequently taken place. He describes a fictional disaster when a rocket blows up killing the people inside that is almost exactly identical to the real Space Shuttle Challenger disaster that took place on January 28, 1986, with seven would-be astronauts inside, showing that seven would-be astronauts who were killed had not studied this book to anticipate this problem.

Book excerpt: Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Book excerpt: This classic on space travel was first published in 1953, when interplanetary space flight was considered science fiction by most of those who considered it at all. Here the German-born scientist Wernher von Braun detailed what he believed were the problems and possibilities inherent in a projected expedition to Mars. Today von Braun is recognized as the person most responsible for laying the groundwork for public acceptance of America's space program. When President Bush directed NASA in 1989 to prepare plans for an orbiting space station, lunar research bases, and human exploration of Mars, he was largely echoing what von Braun proposed in The Mars Project.

Book excerpt: By the middle of the 21st century, humanity has finally landed men on Mars-only to watch helplessly as the first two missions end in catastrophe and death. With resources running out, a third-and perhaps final-mission to Mars is hastily mounted, with a crew of four men and two women. But from the moment of their arrival on Mars, everything begins to go wrong. The fuel tanks that were to have supplied their return trip are found corroded and empty. Their supplies are running out and their life support systems are beginning to fail. And any rescue mission won't reach them for months, or even years-if at all. The crew's only hope for survival lies in a desperate plan: an agonizing trek halfway across the surface of Mars to a ship designed to carry only half their number. Torn by conflict and dissent, and troubled by secrets that endanger them all, they must embark on an ordeal that will test them to the limits of endurance.

Book excerpt: Noted French writer Michel Gauquelin was a strong critic of traditional astrology, but he maintained that there was a direct correlation between the planetary positions at the time of a person's birth and that individual's personality and eventual achievement. He claimed to find a relationship between Jupiter and military prowess, Venus and artists, Mars and sports greatness - the last of which resulted in the term "Mars Effect". Gauquelin labeled this theory "Astrobiology". The French Committee for the Study of Paranormal Phenomena convened to test his claim and gathered data on 1,066 famous sports figures. The data from the French test is now available for review. Is Gauquelin correct in his claims for an astrological impact on some gifted athletes, or might there be other explanations? Now you can decide for yourself.

He has always been inspired by astronomy and a love of science fiction, bringing all the excitement of a young boy's creativity to The Mars Experiment.

Book excerpt: TIME’S #1 FICTION TITLE OF THE YEAR • NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018 FINALIST for the MAN BOOKER PRIZE and the NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD LONGLISTED for the ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL An instant New York Times bestseller from two-time National Book Award finalist Rachel Kushner, The Mars Room earned tweets from Margaret Atwood—“gritty, empathic, finely rendered, no sugar toppings, and a lot of punches, none of them pulled”—and from Stephen King—“The Mars Room is the real deal, jarring, horrible, compassionate, funny.” It’s 2003 and Romy Hall, named after a German actress, is at the start of two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women’s Correctional Facility, deep in California’s Central Valley. Outside is the world from which she has been severed: her young son, Jackson, and the San Francisco of her youth. Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the bare essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and casual acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the deadpan absurdities of institutional living, portrayed with great humor and precision. Stunning and unsentimental, The Mars Room is “wholly authentic…profound…luminous” (The Wall Street Journal), “one of those books that enrage you even as they break your heart” (The New York Times Book Review, cover review)—a spectacularly compelling, heart-stopping novel about a life gone off the rails in contemporary America. It is audacious and tragic, propulsive and yet beautifully refined and “affirms Rachel Kushner as one of our best novelists” (Entertainment Weekly).
