Download or read book America's Commitment to South Korea written by Joo-Hong Nam and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-03-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the strategic rationale of the American security commitment to South Korea in the light of the palpable failure of containment strategy in Indo-China. During the 1970s the dilemma confronting successive American administrations was that, whilst wishing to maintain their old commitment to South Korea, they had no desire to preside over another Vietnam. Military commitment and political support were necessarily disengaged, and the Nixon doctrine served as both the end and the means of containment strategy in Asia. The study identifies the principal conditions that have influenced changing American perspectives on South Korea, and examines some of the general problems of collective security in the region. Unique in the direct engagement of China, the Soviet Union and the United States, the security position of South Korea bears directly upon the achievement of peace and stability throughout East Asia.

Differences between New Zealand and the United States over nuclear policy persist and are likely to remain a sore point bilaterally. There is little prospect of ANZUS returning to the status quo ante. Against that background it is important for Americans to understand why New Zealanders adhere to their policies and grasp why those policies, and the rationale behind them are relevant for alliance cohesion in Northeast Asia. Keywords: International relations; Nuclear weapons policies; Political alliances. (EDC).
Book Synopsis Korea at the Center: Dynamics of Regionalism in Northeast Asia by : Charles K. Armstrong
Download or read book Korea at the Center: Dynamics of Regionalism in Northeast Asia written by Charles K. Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common images of Korea view the peninsula as a long-standing battleground for outside powers and the Cold War's last divided state. But, Korea's location at the very center of Northeast Asia gives it a pivotal role in the economic integration of the region and the dynamic development of its more powerful neighbors. A great wave of economic expansion, driven first by the Japanese miracle and then by the ascent of China, has made South Korea - an economic powerhouse in its own right - the hub of the region once again, a natural corridor for railroads and energy pipelines linking Asiatic Russia to China and Japan. And, over the horizon, an opening of North Korea, with multilateral support, would add another major push toward regional integration. Illuminating the role of the Korean peninsula in three modern historical periods, the eminent international contributors to this volume offer a fresh and stimulating appraisal of Korea as the key to the coalescence of a broad, open Northeast Asian regionalism in the twenty-fifth century.
