Book excerpt: "The Egyptians were people of flesh and blood, capable of both greatness and weakness, masters of ambitious projects but also slaves to banal preoccupations. They imposed their vision of the world on their environment, but they were weighed down by the burden of the human condition. In short, they were like any of us. And like ours, their society had its affairs, its scandals, its uncertainties, and its rifts."--from the Preface Drawing on ancient texts, archaeological reports, and other sources, Pascal Vernus focuses attention on the human failings of the too-often-mythologized Egyptians. Affairs and Scandals in Ancient Egypt treats instances of significant corruption--which, according to Vernus, constitute a crisis of values--in New Kingdom Egypt. His discoveries afford sobering new insights into the tension between stated beliefs and actual behavior in ancient Egyptian civilization. The examples of corruption Vernus describes run the gamut from graverobbing to labor unrest, from embezzlement to palace intrigue. The first chapter deals with the tomb robberies in the Theban necropolis during the Twentieth Dynasty. The second outlines the economic context and events associated with strikes carried out by the workmen of the royal necropolis. The third chapter uses a certain Paneb as an exemplar of corruption in the area of Thebes. Chapter 4 considers the theft of government property and attempted cover-ups in the Aswan region. The last example may be the most dramatic--the conspiracy in the royal women's quarters in the last year of Ramesses III aimed at affecting the succession to the throne. In the book's final chapter, Vernus analyzes the historical contexts and the main issues surrounding each scandal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A secular regime is toppled by Western intervention, but an Islamic backlash turns the liberators into occupiers. Caught between interventionists at home and fundamentalists abroad, a prime minister flounders as his ministers betray him, alliances fall apart, and a runaway general makes policy in the field. As the media accuse Western soldiers of barbarity and a region slides into chaos, the armies of God clash on an ancient river and an accidental empire arises. This is not the Middle East of the early twenty-first century. It is Africa in the late nineteenth century, when the river Nile became the setting for an extraordinary collision between Europeans, Arabs, and Africans. A human and religious drama, the conflict defined the modern relationship between the West and the Islamic world. The story is not only essential for understanding the modern clash of civilizations but is also a gripping, epic, tragic adventure. Three Empires on the Nile tells of the rise of the first modern Islamic state and its fateful encounter with the British Empire of Queen Victoria. Ever since the self-proclaimed Islamic messiah known as the Mahdi gathered an army in the Sudan and besieged and captured Khartoum under its British overlord Charles Gordon, the dream of a new caliphate has haunted modern Islamists. Today, Shiite insurgents call themselves the Mahdi Army, and Sudan remains one of the great fault lines of battle between Muslims and Christians, blacks and Arabs. The nineteenth-century origins of it all were even more dramatic and strange than today's headlines. In the hands of Dominic Green, the story of the Nile's three empires is an epic in the tradition of Kipling, the bard of empire, and Winston Churchill, who fought in the final destruction of the Mahdi's army. It is a sweeping and very modern tale of God and globalization, slavers and strategists, missionaries and messianists. A pro-Western regime collapses from its own corruption, a jihad threatens the global economy, a liberation movement degenerates into a tyrannical cult, military intervention goes wrong, and a temporary occupation lasts for decades. In the rise and fall of empires, we see a parable for our own times and a reminder that, while American military involvement in the Islamic world is the beginning of a new era for America, it is only the latest chapter in an older story for the people of the region.

It multiplied and it traveled fast. This historical novel is an engrossing saga of court intrigue, forbidden love, and ferocious battles playing out in the colorful settings along the Nile during the reign of Aha, Second King of the First Dynasty of Egypt (ca. 3080 B.C.).Many compelling characters enliven KHAMSIN. The briskly-paced action evokes a tumultuous epoch. Coming alive in this multi-faceted epic are many characters ranging from fascinating to likable, from ambitious to suspicious, to plain unsavory. The eloquent narrative is divided into five major parts, with forty-three chapters, a poignant prologue, and a thought-provoking epilogue. Meticulous research of ancient sites and the way of life of those enigmatic Nile dwellers lends authenticity to this pre-Pyramid, pre-Pharaoh era of the Two Lands.

Book excerpt: The source of the Nile had long eluded and tormented explorers, and John Hanning Speke's discovery of Lake Victoria in 1858 elevated him to the pantheon of heroes of African exploration, alongside Livingstone and Stanley. But the part played by the Welsh mining engineer John Petherick in the discovery was ignored after he was branded a slave trader by Speke, and the controversy that followed ended with Petherick ruined and Speke dead. This first biography of Petherick places him at the centre of one of the great discoveries in African exploration - and as the focus of a dispute that rocked the geographical establishment. Was Petherick a rogue, as portrayed by some, or the victim of a conspiracy that destroyed his reputation and denied him a share of the credit for his part in one of the greatest feats in African exploration?

Book excerpt: This book is a historical novel. It combines historical records with likely, but also speculative events and ideas, such as beliefs, love, family relations, leadership qualities or lack thereof, beliefs, conjugal and family ties among Egyptian royalty, religion and religious upheaval, and a unique, revolutionary departure from traditional Egyptian religion, from polytheism to monotheism and finally the murder of a pharaoh. The worship of light and its permanence through all subsequent civilizations was historically introduced by Akhenaten, and is visually presented to the reader. The story happened at a crucial time when Egypt expanded its intellectual as well as commercial ties throughout what we now call the Middle East. It was at a time when the presence of Hebrews in Egypt was documented and when the Moses’ story and the Exodus presumably occurred. Some credence is given to the Bible, to Sigmund Freud’s book ‘Moses and Monotheism’, to the the two Jewish theologian brothers Massoud at the University of Montpelier in France, and to Ahmed Osman, an Egyptian archaeologist in England. All this is interwoven with the authors’ own ideas. The primary goal of the author was not to convince the reader of the truth of the story, but to develop an interesting and credible story. The secondary goal was to advance the notion that light—particularly sunlight—is not just a physical phenomenon but the principal radiation and tradition on our planet, the source of life and the object of worship not just for Akhenaten but to many other religions primarily Christianity and the Enlightenment in France and in nascent America.

Book excerpt: For more than three thousand years, the mysterious events surrounding the death of Ramesses III have puzzled historians and students of ancient Egypt. Now, archaeologist Susan Redford investigates the circumstances of the ancient pharaoh's death and discovers among the women of his harem the threads of a murder conspiracy. From new translations of ancient papyri and careful readings of temple carvings, Redford identifies the suspects in the assassination--wives, concubines, and attendants. She evaluates the evidence against them and outlines a possible murder plot that turns upon a shocking revelation about the pharaoh's immediate family. On the basis of new discoveries relating to the identity of Ramesses III's queens and their sons, she uncovers a primary motive for regicide and presents persuasive evidence of a palace revolt. Divisions between clans and rival lineages, she argues, gave rise to a plot to murder the king. Richly illustrated with thirty photos and diagrams, Redford's groundbreaking investigation of the plot to murder "the last of the great pharaohs" offers an extraordinary vision of the ancient Egyptian world.
