Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of personal correspondence provides a rare window into the private life of the toweringnineteenth-century philosopher. Friedrich Nietzsche was the most iconoclastic philosopher of modern history. He is known to the world as the scathingly brilliant provocateur behind such foundational works as Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and Twilight of the Idols. This was Nietzsche as he addressed himself to the public. But in this collection of his personal letters, we discover a very different man: Nietzsche the devoted son; the caring friend; the university student; the shy and distant lover. Comprised of correspondence between Nietzsche’s inner circle—including several revelatory letters to his sister—Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher’s daily life.

Ruskin was the most prolific English writer there has ever been. His published works alone number some 250 titles and this is besides lectures, diaries, correspondence and tens of thousands of letters that remain unpublished. This is the first biography of Ruskin to return to the original source material, some of which has been read for the first time by the author." "It begins in 1859 with Ruskin, famous as the author of Modern Painters, The Seven Lamps of Architecture and The Stones of Venice, living in south London with his parents, his disastrous marriage over, continuing to write and travel and to tutor, amongst other pupils, Rose La Touche, a girl of ten, with whom he slowly fell in love. This relationship would develop into one of the saddest love affairs of literary history ending in tragedy in 1875, and from which Ruskin would never recover." "From 1875 onwards Ruskin was plagued by bouts of insanity and despair that would lead to total breakdown for the last ten years of his life, but, as Hilton shows, the later years, far from being a period merely of decline, were a time when the great man's intellect and imagination reached new heights. It was in these years that Ruskin produced Praeterita and most of Fors Clavigera the series of monthly letters to British workers which Hilton discusses in the context of the writer's life." "As Slade Professor of Art at the University of Oxford he founded his drawing schools, today the Ruskin School of Art. His books and lectures were on subjects ranging from history of art to social reform to botany."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the compelling private world of the most infamous philosopher of the nineteenth century in Nietzsche s Unpublished Letters. With correspondence to Nietzsche s inner circle including several titillating letters to his sister Nietzsche s Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher s daily life. Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher and a founder of the Existentialist school of thought. He is famous for his controversial philosophies challenging Christianity, religion, and morality. Nietzsche was born in a small Prussian village in 1844 to a large Lutheran family, and his early childhood was largely marked by the deaths of his father and brother. Nietzsche attended the University of Bonn to study philology, where he discovered the philosophies of Arthur Schopenhauer and Immanuel Kant. He also formed a close friendship with Wilhelm Wagner, and with the help of Wagner, Nietzsche secured a position teaching philology at the University of Basel when he was only 24. This friendship abruptly ended in 1878 with Nietzsche s book Human, All-too-Human. Shortly after, his health began deteriorating, and he struck up a nomadic, stateless existence during which he wrote his most enduring works, including The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a mental breakdown, and his sister Elisabeth cared for him until his death in 1900.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche’s relationship with Wagner has long been a source of controversy and has given rise to a number of important studies, including this major breakthrough in Nietzsche scholarship, first published in 1982. In this work Hollinrake contends that the nature and extent of the anti-Wagnerian pastiche and polemic in Thus Spake Zarathustra is arguably the most important factor in the association between the two. Thus Wagner, as the purveyor of a particular brand of Schopenhauerian pessimism, is here revealed as one of the principle sources – and targets – of Zarathustra. Whilst addressed primarily to students of German Literature, this book will also be of interest to musicians, philosophers and students of the history of culture and ideas.
