Watching him bound around the backcountry or swimming behind Justin Barbour's raft, you just know that he is ready to go on a very long adventure! Best of all, he carries a famous name, that of Saku Koivu, the long-ago captain of the Montreal Canadiens. Together with his owner, Justin, Saku is going to cross from Robinsons in western Newfoundland to Cape Broyle, where the province's eastern shores meet the Atlantic Ocean! Using a satellite phone, they inform everyone how they are doing as the months speed by. What will the two friends find as they travel through dense bush, cross icy rivers, shoot rapids, and catch trout for fresh food? Travelling with Saku and Justin, young readers will also learn how to start a campfire, make a warm bed of boughs for chilly nights, and to live as friends with nature. After a snowy spring start, the two pals can soon travel faster and make new friends as they emerge from the wilderness in the little towns of St. Alban's and Conne River. Excited children, townspeople, Chief Mi'sel Joe, and his family all welcome them warmly and offer a break from their long, hard journey. Saku's personal pack is soon filled with new kibble, Justin is relaxed and happy, and the pair continue eastward. Even Bear, Saku's doggy friend who remains at home, can hear Saku's excited bark when Justin and his girlfriend chat together on the phone. Finally, they near Cape Broyle. Saku and Justin can't believe the welcoming party gathered near the beach. A cheer goes up, they are home again with many ad adventure to share!

Book excerpt: "One man, one dog, and a grand adventure across the rugged and mystical interior wilderness of Newfoundland. In April of 2017, Justin Barbour and his dog, Saku, arrived on the Rock's west coast to begin their quest to live the ways of old and see parts of the province's woods that few will ever get to see. A late winter lingers, and the duo must push over the Long Range Mountains and toward the interior of the island, where they hope lakes and rivers will be thawed to allow them to continue by inflatable raft. From sunrise to sunset, the reader will follow the companions as they navigate against the dangerous and unforgiving elements from west to east in an attempt to reach Cape Broyle, some 700 kilometres away. It was an adventure that spanned sixty-eight days and would push their limits further than they could have ever imagined. You'll see the island in a unique way, become enlightened about outdoor life, and learn more about Newfoundland and Labrador as a whole. Complete with photos, maps, and interesting facts from the journey, you will feel the heat of the campfire roasting your cheeks, the tug of a trout on your line, and the breath of a black bear on your neck. It's an experience for nature lovers everywhere."--

Book excerpt: In 1949, several young Mounties arrived in Canada's newest province to enforce federal law. Like those who followed, they were in search of adventure, and they found plenty. RCMP veterans, as well as the last living Newfoundland Rangers, tell their personal stories in this book. From laughter to moments of sheer terror, to discovering innovative ways to connect with the communities they police, to investigating the murder of one of their own, these RCMP veterans tell the true history of the RCMP's first 70 years policing in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was founded in 1873, and the first Newfoundlander to join was Constable Earnest W. Peyton, in 1888. He was the son of a prominent family from Twillingate and was believed to be 21 at the time. It was March 22, 1949, some 76 years after its inception, that the RCMP arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador. Eight Mounties and one officer arrived in the province and opened a Divisional Headquarters on Kenna's Hill in St. John's to enforce federal law. The RCMP was officially recognized a year later, on August 1, 1950, with an agreement between RCMP Deputy Commissioner C. K. Gray and the Attorney General for the province, the Honourable L. R. Curtis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Seaman, the Newfoundland dog who joined the Lewis and Clark expedition into the uncharted western wilderness. Seaman was much more than the faithful companion of Captain Lewis. Seaman risked his life many times and served the Corps of Discovery as a hunter, retriever, and guard dog. This richly detailed account of the expedition includes its planning, its adventures and discoveries, and its aftermath. During the trek from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back, every member of the Corps of Discovery suffered from hunger, insect bites, injuries, and close calls with death. Noted children's author Laurence Pringle follows the expedition closely and highlights the adventures of Seaman as they appear in the journals of Lewis and Clark. Pringle also offers evidence, first revealed in 2000, about what happened to Seaman after the journey's end. With intriguing sidebars, historical illustrations, journal excerpts, and original art, this account of the Corps of Discovery features the remarkable dog that was the expedition's most unusual member.
