Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History, Vol. 1 When, in 1901, the Expedition of the S.S. 'Discovery, ' under Captain Scott, R.N., was sent to the Antarctic Regions, the Trustees of the British Museum gave their assistance to this national enterprise by allowing the cases containing the natural history specimens which might be obtained by the Expedition to be sent to the Natural History Museum for unpacking and sorting. They further undertook to publish a detailed report on the collections so obtained, under the superintendence of the Director of the Natural History Departments. Some of the most important collections have been dealt with by naturalists who were members of the Expedition. Thus, the Mammals and Birds are described by Dr. Edward A. Wilson, the Isopoda and Pycnogonida by Mr. T. V. Ilodgson, and the Rocks (in relation to Field Geology) by Mr. H. T. Ferrar. Other groups have been dealt with by members of the staff of the Natural History Departments of the British Museum: Mr. Boulenger describes the Fishes; Mr. E. A. Smith, the Gastropoda, Lamellibranchia, and Brachiopoda; Mr. Jeffrey Bell, the Echinoderma; Dr. Caiman, the Crustacea Decapoda, and the Cumacea; Mr. Kirkpatrick, the non-calcareons Sponges; whilst Dr. G. T. Prior has prepared a petrographical description of the Rock-specimens. It has been necessary to obtain the assistance of other specialists in order to deal with the rest of the collections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 5: Mammals Like all vertebrates, the mammals never have more than two pairs of limbs, but with the exception of some of the aquatic forms (whale, these two pairs are always present, whence the name in frequent use for the class - quadrupeds. The anterior pair of limbs are never absent in the group. Except in a few forms, to be noted below, the body is covered with hair. The mouth is usually armed with teeth. The heart is four-chambered, and the circulation is complete. The blood is warm and contains non-nucleated red corpuscles. The body cavity is divided into two portions by a transverse muscle, the diaphragm, or midriff, the anterior portion being called the pleural, and the posterior, or abdominal portion, the peritoneal cavity. The young are born alive, and are afterward nourished by milk, secreted by milk glands (mammee), whence the name of the class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Natural History, Vol. 1: A Foundation of Useful Knowledge of the Higher Animals of North America The views entertained by the author and publisher as they were represented by the first edition of the American Natural His tory have been materially strengthened by the lapse of time. In 1904 we believed that the time was ripe for the publication of a work which, while scientifically accurate, would convey much prac tical information, and be read through for entertainment before being placed upon the shelf for reference. The highest compliment that the author ever received regarding the original volume was the assurance from a young lady that she had read every page of it, from cover to cover. During the past ten years, the conditions affecting the wild life of North America have swiftly changed. The total amount of scientific facts that have been accumulated by the technologists, and stored up for future reference, is enormous. Scientific spe cialization has become such an educational mania that the old fashioned all - round naturalists now are few and lonesome. At the same time, however, the need for the dissemination of prae tical every-day knowledge regarding our mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes never was so great as now. The wholesale destruction of bird life, with the enormously increased cost of living that has come as a natural and inexorable result, renders it highly necessary that people generally should have a chance to recognize their friends and their enemies in the animal world. To-day there are millions of American producers and consumers who do not know their best friends, and who think, for example, that a quail is val nable only as so many ounces of edible meat for the table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Vol. 1: Including Zoology, Botany, and Geology With the present Number this Journal enters upon the fifth decennial period of its existence. The Editors, one of whom assisted at the very birth of the 'Annals', cannot but congratulate themselves upon the continued and ever-increasing vitality of their Journal, which, notwithstanding the numerous other means of publishing Natural-History Articles that now exist, has at no previous period of its career been more abundantly supplied with good materials. This is due, no doubt, in great measure to the extreme activity which has prevailed in the investigation of all branches of Natural History during the last fifteen years; but the Editors cannot help feeling that the continued flow of valuable articles to their Journal is an indication that it is regarded as, to some extent, a particularly favourable vehicle for publication - a view which is confirmed by the fact that even Foreign Naturalists seek admission for their writings to its pages. That it may still retain this character will be the object of their earnest endeavours jand they trust it will be long before the increasing age of the 'Annals' is betrayed by any signs of decrepitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curiosities of Natural History, Vol. 1 of 2 In the following pages will be found some of my experiences and observations during the last few years. The subjects treated are certainly various, but I have always made it a rule to observe and learn wherever I go. For more than seven years I gave to "The Field" newspaper my best labours, by contributing weekly articles to its columns. Of these contributions, by legal agreement, I retain the copyright, and therefore reproduce from that journal selections from my writings. Owing to the treatment I received, my connection with "The Field" has now entirely ceased. I beg to offer my thanks to the proprietors of the "Leisure Hour," "Household Words," and "Chambers' Journal" for their kindness in allowing me to reproduce some of my articles which originally appeared in their columns.
