Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Life in Christ Jesus: Essays on Subjects Relating to Spiritual Life; To Which Is Added, Listening to Jesus, And, the Law of Love The pure Love of God (a doctrine which has been strongly asserted from the time of St. Katherine of Genoa and by others before her down to the present day, but not always Without causing considerable vexation to its supporters, as in the case of Fenelon): Union with God complete and absolute: Transformation into His likeness (which presupposes the extirpation of self-love, or the self principle, the root of all human misery, for if there were no self-will there would neither be Hell nor Devil, says our author), that we may love God as He loves us - that is, so far as is competent to finite natures: in other words, a complete new Birth and new Life, - that is the basis of our author's spiritual teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Life in Christ Jesus All of the matter composing this book was preached to my congregations in my two pastorates at Dallas, Texas, and Northfield, Massachusetts, and all, save the address on "The Imparted Life," were published first in the "Dallas News." These, re-printed in "The Christian Worker's Magazine," awoke a desire which seemed to be unusually widespread that these teachings concerning the New Life in Christ Jesus might be collected into a book. This, by arrangement with The Bible Institute Colportage Association, has now been done. The book is here and now committed to the care of Him whom it seeks to exalt in the fervent prayer that through His grace it may show the way into happy, victorious, fruitful Christian living to many in bondage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So Clear-cut was their picture of the Kingdom that when it did come in another guise they did not recognise it. Once more men are waiting for the Kingdom of God. We have prayed for revival; and we can conceive no revival which does not express itself in repentance, faith, and prayer and in a deepened loyalty to the organised associations for Christian worship and service. But in the New Testament we read not only of the Christ but also of the Baptist. There were men who were not far from the Kingdom, yet who had been baptised only with John's baptism, who still lacked the quickening breath of Holy Spirit, did not even know of the existence of Holy Spirit. Book excerpt: In The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind (1994) Mark Noll offered a forthrightly critical assessment of the state of evangelical thinking and scholarship. Now, nearly twenty years later, in a sequel more attuned to possibilities than to problems, Noll updates his earlier assessment and charts a positive way forward for evangelical scholarship. Noll's Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind shows how the orthodox Christology confessed in the ancient Christian creeds, far from hindering or discouraging serious scholarship, can supply the motives, guidance, and framework for learning. Christian faith, Noll argues, can richly enhance intellectual engagement in the various academic disciplines -- and he demonstrates how by applying his insights to the fields of history (his own area of expertise), science, and biblical studies in particular. In a substantial postscript Noll candidly addresses the question How fares the "evangelical mind" today? as he highlights "hopeful signs" of intellectual life in a host of evangelical institutions, individuals, and movements. -- From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Widely proclaimed a classic work of Christian faith, Life of Christ has been hailed as the most eloquent of Fulton J. Sheen's many books. The fruit of many years of reflection, prayer, and research, it is a dramatic and moving recounting of the birth, life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ, and a passionate portrait of the God-Man, the teacher, the healer, and, most of all, the Savior, whose promise has sustained humanity for two millenia. With his customary insight and reverence, Sheen interprets the Scripture and describes Christ not only in historical perspective but also in exciting and contemporary terms -- seeing in Christ's life both modern parallels and timeless lessons. His thoughtful, probing analysis provides new insight into well-known Gospel events. An appealing blend of philosophy, history, and biblical exegesis, from the best-known and most-loved American Catholic leader of the twentieth century, Life of Christ has long been a source of inspiration and guidance. For those seeking to better understand the message of Jesus Christ, this vivid retelling of the greatest story ever lived is a must-read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Jesus There is scarcely another fact' in the Christian Faith that has caused so much difficulty to the belief of the modern man as that of the Resurrection of Jesus. The advance of science in our days seems to leave no room for miracle, especially for such a miracle as the resurrection of the dead to a new bodily life. And yet the question here is not of a miracle which could be put aside as unhistorical, without essential deduction from the apostolic Gospel. The church has always considered the resurrection of Jesus as a principal part of her message. The apostle Paul occasionally describes Christian saving faith in the words: Thou believest in thine heart that God hath raised Jesus from the dead (rom. 10. 9) and he also says directly: If Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain ye are yet in 3 your Sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished (1 Cor. 15. I4, 17, In like manner among all other New Testament writers, the resurrec. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 6: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels The work of Dr Lange, translated in the accompanying volumes, holds among books the honourable position of being the most complete Life of our Lord. There are other works which more thoroughly investigate the authenticity of the Gospel records, some which more satisfactorily discuss the chronological difficulties involved in this most important of histories, and some which present a more formal and elaborate exegetical treatment of the sources; but there is no single work in which all these branches are so fully attended to, or in which so much matter bearing on the main subject is brought together, or in which so many points are elucidated. The immediate object of this comprehensive and masterly work, was to refute those views of the life of our Lord which had been propagated by Negative Criticism, and to substitute that authentic and consistent history which a truly scientific and enlightened criticism educes from the Gospels. It is now several years since the original work appeared in Germany, but the date of its first appearance will be reckoned a disadvantage only by those who are unacquainted with the recent history of theological literature. No work has in this interval appeared which has superseded, or can be said even to compete with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
