Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth, the first capital of New Jersey, took its name from the founder of the English colony's wife, Elizabeth Carteret. The birthplace of several Founding Fathers, Elizabeth would use such prestige to position itself in the booming business eras of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its strategic location along the Hudson River and on the route to New York made it a hot spot of activity during the American War of Independence and the War of 1812. These same traits gave rise to Elizabeth as a center of commerce in New Jersey during the past two centuries. Today, Elizabeth stands as a multicultural metropolis, home to over 100,000 people.
Book Synopsis Envisioning New Jersey by : Maxine N. Lurie
Download or read book Envisioning New Jersey written by Maxine N. Lurie and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance Author Award, Reference Category See New Jersey history as you read about it! Envisioning New Jersey brings together 650 spectacular images that illuminate the course of the state’s history, from prehistoric times to the present. Readers may think they know New Jersey’s history—the state’s increasing diversity, industrialization, and suburbanization—but the visual record presented here dramatically deepens and enriches that knowledge. Maxine N. Lurie and Richard F. Veit, two leading authorities on New Jersey history, present a smorgasbord of informative pictures, ranging from paintings and photographs to documents and maps. Portraits of George Washington and Molly Pitcher from the Revolution, battle flags from the War of 1812 and the Civil War, women air raid wardens patrolling the streets of Newark during World War II, the Vietnam War Memorial—all show New Jerseyans fighting for liberty. There are also pictures of Thomas Mundy Peterson, the first African American to vote after passage of the Fifteenth Amendment; Paul Robeson marching for civil rights; university students protesting in the 1960s; and Martin Luther King speaking at Monmouth University. The authors highlight the ethnic and religious variety of New Jersey inhabitants with images that range from Native American arrowheads and fishing implements, to Dutch and German buildings, early African American churches and leaders, and modern Catholic and Hindu houses of worship. Here, too, are the great New Jersey innovators from Thomas Edison to the Bell Labs scientists who worked on transistors. Compiled by the authors of New Jersey: A History of the Garden State, this volume is intended as an illustrated companion to that earlier volume. Envisioning New Jersey also stands on its own because essays synthesizing each era accompany the illustrations. A fascinating gold mine of images from the state’s past, Envisioning New Jersey is the first illustrated book on the Garden State that covers its complete history, capturing the amazing transformation of New Jersey over time. Download or read book Woodbridge written by Virginia B. Troeger and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprised of ten distinct communities, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey nevertheless has a unified identity with historic roots reaching back more than 330 years. Originally populated by Native Americans, the Dutch claimed the area in the early seventeenth century before the English established the religious, political, and educational heritage that Woodbridge boasts today. In the 1800s, the township flourished under the leadership of residents who provided strong social ties and entrepreneurs who developed the clay and brick companies as well as the once popular Boynton Beach resort in Sewaren. Dedicated citizens continued their commitment to Woodbridge's progress and prosperity through the years.Woodbridge: New Jersey's Oldest Township takes readers on a trip through an ever-changing community. Vintage photographs, maps, and a lively narrative reveal the heroic actions of citizens such as Janet Pike Gage, who raised the town's first liberty pole, and Reverend Azel Roe, the minister who defied the British during the Revolutionary War. Readers accompany the town's growth through the rise and fall of the clay and brick industries that once defined the local economy from 1825 to the onset of the Great Depression. Voted "All-America City" in 1964 by the National Municipal League, the community continues to uphold the legacy of the people who made it such a great place to live and work. Woodbridge: New Jersey's Oldest Township is a memorable tribute to this tradition.

Download or read book Hillside written by Jean-Rae Turner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families with names such as Lyons and Woodruff were large landowners of the area that eventually became known as Hillside. The land, originally part of the Elizabethtown Grant, was fertile and provided generous farm goods to its residents. The town became known for its apple orchards and cider mills, notably the Woodruff Cider Mill, which locals said produced the best cider around. As Hillside developed its own character, its people began a movement for independence in 1905. On April 29, 1913, they voted to form their own township. Hillside contains countless beautiful images gleaned from sources as diverse as private residents and professional news organizations. While children attend classes again at Salem School or Saybrook School, workers build Bristol-Myers and Kraft into highly successful, global companies. Hillside invites the reader to the Roaring Twenties ball of the Ladies' Auxiliary and to ride along the Italian-American Association's parade float. Even the Evergreen Cemetery, home to the grave of writer Stephen Crane and more recently the setting for the Shelly Winters movie King of the Gypsies, finds its place in this remarkable book.

Book Synopsis Philadelphia Quakers and the Antislavery Movement by : Brian Temple
Download or read book Philadelphia Quakers and the Antislavery Movement written by Brian Temple and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quakers came to America in the 17th century to seek religious freedom. After years of struggle, they achieved success in various endeavors and, like many wealthy colonists of the time, bought and sold slaves. But a movement to remove slavery from their midst, sparked by their religious beliefs, grew until they renounced the slave trade and freed their slaves. Once they rejected slavery, the Quakers then began to petition the state and Federal governments to do the same. When those in power turned a blind eye to the suffering of those enslaved, the Quakers used both legal and, in the eyes of the government, illegal means to fight slavery. This determination to stand against slavery led some Quakers to join with others to be a part of the Underground Railroad. The transition from friend to foe of slavery was not a quick one but one that nevertheless was ahead of the rest of America.

Download or read book Weirdly Beloved written by Cynthia Ceilan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the romantic misadventures she’s witnessed in her own family, Cynthia Ceilán takes us jauntily through real-life stories about love: what demented things we do in the name of love, the wildly unusual choices people have made in their selection of a mate, and the joys and horrors of saying goodbye to a relationship that has long overstayed its welcome. In her fact-finding mission to write this collection, Cynthia Ceilán began in the bowels of her own family history, which always seemed unnecessarily shrouded in mystery. There she discovered a treasure trove of delightfully wicked secrets, which spurred her on to create this collection of true stories from around the world. Here's some of what she found: “Normal” is in the eye (and the bedsprings) of the beholder, especially when it comes to furries, objectophiles, and happily married conjoined twins. Same-sex marriage is illegal in most countries but a few are happy to let you marry your dog. You shouldn't be afraid to invite your crazy relatives to your wedding – unless your brothers are Scott, Erik, Aaron, Ryan, and Randall and they’re currently out on bail. Weirdly Beloved offers comforting proof that there is never only one way to fall in love, or one way to be properly married, or one way to suffer the necessary indignities of love gone wrong.
