Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New America and the Far East: A Picturesque and Historic Description of These Lands and Peoples During that period, we have changed from one of the weakest to the most powerful nation on the globe. Fifty years ago, the monarchs who governed what were then the leading nations of the earth established diplomatic relations with scarcely a thought of the young republic on the western Shore of the Atlantic. N ow, the powerful nations of the world seek our friendship, and none venture any important diplomacy without first learning whether it will be acceptable to this great republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Far West and the Old Far East: Being Notes of a Tour in North America, Japan, China, Ceylon, Etc In publishing this volume, I wish to point out to my readers, that I have purposely avoided going over old ground. In my last work entitled Life and Labour in the Far Far West, published in 1884, I described many places in Canada, revisited in my recent tour. I do not consider a repetition of the same facts necessary; and though in some cases I may be obliged to mention places visited before (for the sake of comparison), it will be as briefly as possible - Granville, now Vancouver City, in British Columbia, excepted. The new ground in Canada, over which I lately travelled, was a district recently opened up by the Manitoba and North Western Railway, through the "park-like lands of the Fertile Belt;" from Portage-la-Prairie to Langenburg, and by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from Calgary over the Rocky, Selkirk, and Cascade Mountains to the new terminal city of Vancouver. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years in the Far East: Sketches of Sport, Travel and Adventure Travel, Sport and Adventure, as a tribute to the memory of the writer, my late husband, and I feel that some few words of explanation and introduction are necessary. It was his intention to have published them as soon as written, in the hope that the flattering winds, which favoured his first venture, The Land of the Dragon, might waft this slight craft on a successful voyage. As will be seen from the volume itself, he was full of the joy of living, and was always ready' when opportunity offered, to leave the monotony of official life and snatch a few weeks, or even days, in which to see new sights and meet with fresh experiences. He was always, on these occasions, the best of comrades, being uniformly cheerful and optimistic, and at all times full of resource, insight and charm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Far East: Japan, Korea, China In this New Edition, which has been carefully revised throughout, I have corrected a few mistakes that had crept into the first, and have introduced a good deal of additional matter, supplied or suggested by the events of the past year. The Revision Treaty between Great Britain and Japan, and the Treaty of Peace between Japan and China, are printed as appendices; and in a fresh chapter I have endeavoured to sum up the main issues of the recent conflict, and to forecast its bearing upon the Asiatic situation. I should add that the greater part of this chapter was written before the late change of Government in England, and that it has been composed in entire independence of official information or authority. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of Alexander the Great’s conquests in the late fourth century B.C., Greek garrisons and settlements were established across Central Asia, through Bactria (modern-day Afghanistan) and into India. Over the next three hundred years, these settlements evolved into multiethnic, multilingual communities as much Greek as they were indigenous. To explore the lives and identities of the inhabitants of the Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kingdoms, Rachel Mairs marshals a variety of evidence, from archaeology, to coins, to documentary and historical texts. Looking particularly at the great city of Ai Khanoum, the only extensively excavated Hellenistic period urban site in Central Asia, Mairs explores how these ancient people lived, communicated, and understood themselves. Significant and original, The Hellenistic Far East will highlight Bactrian studies as an important part of our understanding of the ancient world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New America and the Far East The picturesqueness of the country, many of the incidents of its remarkable history, and some of the great Indian personalities are set forth in this book. It shows the variety and the complexity of Indian conditions and Indian life. The Indians are well known to be blood brethren to the people of western Europe, as is shown by the kinship between Sanskrit and Greek, Latin and even modern European tongues. This volume does not aim to show the likeness between the east and west, the similarities of human nature in both continents, but rather to call attention to the divergencies. The author squarely faces the discontent of that part of India which can express its opinion of the rule of the foreigner. In effect, the loud and increasing voices of protest in India insist that the land would rather govern itself ill than be well governed by the Feringhee. And ill governed the land will be, if ever the English lose their hold. For, besides the old rivalries of north and south, of hill and plain, is the unceasing bitter feeling between the Hindu and the Moslem, who live in many parts of India side by side. For all these problems, this book is helpful for its account of the actual conditions of India, of the spirit of the people who may perhaps some day try their own skill at empire building. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A Yankee in the Far East: Look inside the book: I'm glad I thought to post you about the poetry, because it's just barely possible that the editor may be contemplating a trip himself, in which case his paper won't want your stuff,—he will send in some articles; or that his brother, or his sister, or his cousin, or his aunt, all of them gifted writers, are now on the bounding billows, en route for foreign parts, armed with pencils and pads; or that even now one of the paper's big advertisers is in Europe, and some travel stuff he is writing is just beginning to arrive and space must be found for it somewhere (it's just barely possible, I say barely, that that is one of the editor's problems as you drop in on him at 10 A. ...I found myself jammed in with the cruelest, most blood-thirsty, cut-throat gang I've ever seen—and the fact that human beings could be brought to look upon that thing as 'sport,' 'pastime,' 'pleasure,' jarred me most of all—and Juarez is only a little more than a stone's throw from El Paso! ...I fear some of them are no more qualified from personal experience to write about it than I am, but they are banging ahead and writing about it anyway, just because it is a new, fresh subject, full of thrilling possibilities for the pen artist, and as for the artist who can draw pictures to illustrate 18 it—honest you'd die laughing, there's so many funny things about it.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Travellers in the Far East, Vol. 4: Adventures of Two Youths in a Journey to Egypt and the Holy Land Travellers m the Far East is the author's excuse for venturing to prepare a volume' upon Egypt and the Holy Land. He is well aware that those countries have been the favorite theme of authors since the days of Herodotus and Strabo, and many books have been written concerning them. While he could not expect to say much that is new, he hopes the form in which his work is presented will not be found altogether ancient.
