Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Book of the Horse The Arab, it may not be generally known, has stood still in his own country through out the long period of time during which anything definite has been known about him. He has undoubtedly the same elegant outline, the same beautiful appearance, and the same wonderful stamina for which he has always been noted. But in his native state he is no bigger or heavier than he was when he was first introduced into this country some thing like 300 years ago, and this is probably due to the fact that he is bred in countries which do not possess such land as is to be found in many parts of the United Kingdom. It may be urged that the Arab in his own country does not require the luxuriant grasses upon which English horses are reared, and to some extent that is true; but it may be pointed out that when Arabs, Barbs, and other Eastern sires were brought to this country with a view to improving our native breed, the size quickly increased, even in horses whose blood was almost entirely Eastern. The fact is that England, Ireland, and even parts of Scotland, are eminently suitable for horse - breeding, as are the blue grass plains of Ken tucky, the Percheron district of France, certain parts also of the Northern Coast of France, and many districts of Australia and New Zealand. Book excerpt: 'Buying a Horse' is an essay sharing several anecdotes on buying horses by William Dean Howells. He begins by saying that if one has enough money, there seems no reason why one should not go and buy such a horse as he wants. A friend of his proceeded to do so: He was about removing from Charlesbridge, where he had lived many happy years without a horse, farther into the country, where there were charming drives and inconvenient distances, and where a horse would be very desirable, if not quite necessary. But as a horse seemed at first an extravagant if not sinful desire, he began by talking vaguely round, and rather hinting than declaring that he thought somewhat of buying. The professor to whom he first intimated his purpose flung himself from his horse's back to the grassy border of the sidewalk where my friend stood, and said he would give him a few points. "In the first place don't buy a horse that shows much daylight under him, unless you buy a horse-doctor with him; get a short-legged horse; and he ought to be short and thick in the barrel,"—or words to that effect. "Don't get a horse with a narrow forehead: there are horse-fools as well as the other kind, and you want a horse with room for brains. And look out that he's all right forward."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic. The character so impressed Mr. Ketcham that he decided to re-inhabit the earth with the name at least, and so one day, with much pomp, and before an even half dozen horsemen friends, he drove the party out to the farm, where the now world's famous trotter, then a two-year-old, was exhibited, and afterwards christened Cresceus, a bottle Of rare old wine being used in the ceremony. It was thus that the future champion got his name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Public sales are conducted by auctioneers and dealers; private sales by private owners and dealers. Sales, whether public or private, are usually followed as soon as possible by a transference of the horse to the buyer, who is allowed two days in which to give the horse fair examination and trial, at the end of which time, if the horse is not returned the sale is considered complete. Two days is the rule most strictly abided by, but under certain conditions this may be extended to ten days or even two weeks. Letters or evidence bearing upon a contract may complete it in law so that when horses are bought by correspondence the letters and documents act as a part of the contract. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training and Treatment of the Horse In connection with the above subject I would like to call the attention of the reader to one more fact, which is well known to all who handle hors es, and that is that the herse, especially in the summer time, is constantly afflicted with a sore back caused by the galling of the saddle.' When the sore is discovered the owner's first step is to apply some remedy to heal the sore, but he pays no attention whatever to the cause of the sore. The cause is usually found in the driver. When he stops the horse he jumps onto the shafts on one side or the other and then to the ground. When he gets ready to start again he jumps onto the shafts and then to his seat. The average weight of the driver is from one hundred twenty five-to one hundred sixty pounds. Is it to be won dered at that when this weight is thrown on the shafts on one side or the other, w1th the ordinary harness as it is usually used, that the horse's back can be anything else but sore? The part of the back covered by the saddle is usually very tender, = caused by constant perspiration in the summer time and no opportunity given to dry out by reason of the air. Being excluded by the saddle; Now, this tender part receives the worst treat_5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: Its Varieties and Management in Health and Disease It is the object of the present treatise to render this proposition generally acceptable. The call for a new Edition of the three volumes (including the present) forming the farmer's library, within twelve months, has enabled the Author to make further alterations. The part including the Varieties of the Horse, with his Management, already copious in detail, has been carefully revised, and the text largely augmented. The subject of Remedies is discussed in a separate division, as fully as the available space will admit, supplemented by ample directions concerning the doses, and forms of combination to be observed in their use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of a Gentleman in Search of a Horse There are not many men who are acquainted with their own weight with any degree of accuracy; yet the importance of even a few pounds more or less upon the back of a horse, will be felt immediately by observing the consequences attached to it on the turf; the difi'erence of four pounds extra weight will always be found materially to affect the betting upon a horse. It is scarcely necessary to remind the reader that his riding weight is always calculated at a stone above his actual weight; that allowance being usually made for the saddle and bridle. Perhaps there is no single cause that so frequently brings horses down, as their being over-weighted. A dull horse with scarcely a stone more than he is accustomed to bear, will turn sulky and careless the rider becomes impatient, and urges him to exertion; the usual pace of the horse is broken, and a fall is the natural result. Though there are no records to prove it, he could probably develop and keep on developing more power per hundred pounds of his weight than any other member of the equine family. This is explained by the fact that the first animals of this breed were sent from France to Canada by Louis XIV, who liked to do things in great style and who had given instructions to his minister Colbert, the latter very much interested to see the new colony prosper, to pick out the best specimens in his country. These horses, which remained the property of the King for three years, were distributed amongst the gentlemen of Canada who had most helped colonization and farming.
