Book excerpt: Part explanation of important recent work, and part introduction to some of the techniques of modern partial differential equations, this monograph is a self-contained exposition of the Neumann problem for the Cauchy-Riemann complex and certain of its applications. The authors prove the main existence and regularity theorems in detail, assuming only a knowledge of the basic theory of differentiable manifolds and operators on Hilbert space. They discuss applications to the theory of several complex variables, examine the associated complex on the boundary, and outline other techniques relevant to these problems. In an appendix they develop the functional analysis of differential operators in terms of Sobolev spaces, to the extent it is required for the monograph.

Book excerpt: The ∂̄ Neumann problem is probably the most important and natural example of a non-elliptic boundary value problem, arising as it does from the Cauchy-Riemann equations. It has been known for some time how to prove solvability and regularity by the use of L2 methods. In this monograph the authors apply recent methods involving the Heisenberg group to obtain parametricies and to give sharp estimates in various function spaces, leading to a better understanding of the ∂̄ Neumann problem. The authors have added substantial background material to make the monograph more accessible to students. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: This book is intended as both an introductory text and a reference book for those interested in studying several complex variables in the context of partial differential equations. In the last few decades, significant progress has been made in the study of Cauchy-Riemann and tangential Cauchy-Riemann operators; this progress greatly influenced the development of PDEs and several complex variables. After the background material in complex analysis is developed in Chapters 1 to 3, thenext three chapters are devoted to the solvability and regularity of the Cauchy-Riemann equations using Hilbert space techniques. The authors provide a systematic study of the Cauchy-Riemann equations and the \bar\partial-Neumann problem, including Hórmander's L2 existence progress on the globalregularity and irregularity of the \bar\partial-Neumann operators. The second part of the book gives a comprehensive study of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equations, another important class of equations in several complex variables first studied by Lewy. An up-to-date account of the L2 theory for \bar\partial b operator is given. Explicit integral solution representations are constructed both on the Heisenberg groups and on strictly convex boundaries with estimates in Hölder and L2spaces. Embeddability of abstract CR structures is discussed in detail here for the first time.Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.

Book excerpt: The topic of this book is located at the intersection of complex analysis, operator theory and partial differential equations. It begins with results on the canonical solution operator to restricted to Bergman spaces of holomorphic d-bar functions in one and several complex variables. These operators are Hankel operators of special type. In the following the general complex is investigated on d-bar spaces over bounded pseudoconvex domains and on weighted d-bar spaces. The main part is devoted to the spectral analysis of the complex Laplacian and to compactness of the Neumann operator. The last part contains a detailed account of the application of the methods to Schrödinger operators, Pauli and Dirac operators and to Witten-Laplacians. It is assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge of complex analysis, functional analysis and topology. With minimal prerequisites required, this book provides a systematic introduction to an active area of research for both students at a bachelor level and mathematicians.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume presents 36 papers given by leading experts during the Third Conference on Function Spaces held at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. A wide range of topics in the subject area are covered. Most papers are written for nonexperts, so the book can serve as a good introduction to the topic for those interested in this area. The book presents the following broad range of topics, including spaces and algebras of analytic functions of one and of many variables, $Lp$ spaces, spaces of Banach-valued functions, isometries of function spaces, geometry of Banach spaces and related subjects. Known results, open problems, and new discoveries are featured. At the time of publication, information about the book, the conference, and a list and pictures of contributors are available on the Web at www.siue.edu/MATH/conference.htm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MA THEMA TICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Analysis: A Collection of Papers Dedicated to Lipman Bers is a compendium of papers provided by Bers, friends, students, colleagues, and professors. These papers deal with Teichmuller spaces, Kleinian groups, theta functions, algebraic geometry. Other papers discuss quasiconformal mappings, function theory, differential equations, and differential topology. One paper discusses the results of the rigidity theorem of Mostow and its generalization by Marden in relation to geometric properties of Kleinian groups of the first kind. These results, obtained by planar methods, are presented in terms of the hyperbolic 3-space language, which is a natural pedestal in approaching the action of the Kleinian groups. Another paper reviews Riemann's vanishing theorem which solves the Jacobi inversion problem, by relating the vanishing properties of the theta function (particularly at half periods) to properties of certain linear series on the Riemann surface. One paper examines the problem of obtaining relations among the periods of the differentials of first kind on a compact Riemann surface. An application of a computer program involves supersonic transport. The program is based on the hodograph transformation and a method of complex characteristics to calculate profiles that are shock-less at a specified angle of attack, or at a specified subsonic free-stream Mach number. The collection can prove useful for engineers, statisticians, students, and professors in advance mathematics or courses related to aeronautics.
