Book excerpt: This thesis examines how mixed-race individuals shape and negotiate their identities and where they situate themselves along the racial continuum. I share the stories of five individuals of African/Carribean/Lebanese and French-Canadian descent. This study is distinct in that it examines participants' negotiation of two White racially dominant groups, the Anglophone majority and Francophone linguistic minority who themselves differ in social and economic status. It was found that participants' self-identification as individuals of colour was not an indicator of their participation within subordinate groups. Participants chose to situate themselves at different locations on the racial continuum, either participating within Whiteness, Blackness or both. Negotiations within certain locations on the continuum was found to bring benefits, depend to some extent on phenotype, cause tension and contradiction, to be influenced by racism and racial consciousness and to be complicated by language and ethnicity.

Drawing on a series of interviews, acclaimed geographer Minelle Mahtani explores some of the assumptions and attitudes people have around multiraciality. She discovers that, in Canada at least, people of mixed race are often romanticized as being the embodiment of a post-racial future – an ideal that is supported by government policy and often internalized by people of mixed race. As Mahtani reveals, this superficial celebration of multiraciality is often done without any acknowledgment of the freight and legacy of historical racisms. Consequently, a strategic and collective amnesia is taking place – one where complex diasporic and family histories are being lost while colonial legacies are being reinforced. Mahtani argues that in response, a new anti-colonial approach to multiraciality is needed, and she equips her readers with the analytical tools to do this.

Mixed-race individuals defy conventional monocultural and monoracial paradigms of understanding identity, and it is imperative that social workers examine the many factors that contribute to the cultural identity of the multiracial person. Through the collection of narrative stories, this qualitative study explored some of the numerous factors that shape a multiracial individual's cultural identity. Purposive sampling methods were employed to recruit a non-clinical sample of 10 multiracial individuals who reside in the Western New York area. Participants were encouraged to share their individual experiences and tell their own unique stories as related to their cultural identity through a narrative interview process (Stuhlmiller, 2001). Results from transcript analysis verify that the cultural identity of multiracial persons is highly complex and significantly influenced by: (1) personal experiences of racism and discrimination; (2) social interactions and relationships with peers and family; and (3) the racial climate of the environment (i.e., schools and neighborhoods). In addition, this study also identified several themes which provide us with a better understanding of what it is like to be a multiracial person. Finally, this study confirmed that certain models of multiracial identity development (those which are more fluid, strength-based and ecological) proved to be more sensitive and therefore more inclined to explicate some of the more complex and highly influential contextual factors that impact a multiracial person's cultural identity development. The findings from this study can help strengthen the therapeutic relationship with multiracial clients throughout the assessment and treatment phases of clinical therapy.
