Book excerpt: Current organisational structures and cultures limit the social networks of healthcare professionals (HCPs) who facilitate translation of evidence into practice and consistency of patient care standards. ICUConnect, a listserv for intensive care clinicians, was explored as an examplar to evaluate whether HCP virtual communities (VC) facilitate knowledge and clinical expertise exchange within a broader professional social network. A series of studies using multiple methods, underpinned by the Diffusion of Innovations and Community of Practice (CoP) theories, was conducted to address the thesis aim, focusing on 'who', 'what' and 'why' of VC membership and activity. The evaluation of ICUConnect demonstrated that members belong to a virtual CoP with a diverse professional network to support their professional development and enable access to innovations in practice. It is recommended that healthcare organisations consider using virtual CoP to improve internal clinical practices. Further research is required to demonstrate if patient care and outcomes are improved by HCP participant in virtual CoPs.

The participants can have shared experiences that are instantaneous and pretty much of the same nature that is usually realized by the traditional collection of special interest people in close proximity. The members of these virtual communities share their knowledge, cooperate with each other to solve problems, and feel responsibility for each other. Internet based technologies have been the great enablers of virtual communities. In the high-involvement healthcare sector, patients are increasingly seeking online advice and information by participating in virtual communities. The purpose of this paper is to understand the process of consumer value creation in virtual communities. Design/methodology/approach - This paper first adopts Cothrel's framework for the creation of value in virtual communities followed by an application of Kozinets' segmentation model of online consumers to explore the process of consumer value creation by a healthcare virtual community. “Netnography” was used as the research technique for this study. Netnography is an ethnographic research method adapted to the online environment. Discourse analysis is applied to interpret the huge volume of online postings. Findings - The paper identifies four segments of virtual community users - tourists, minglers, devotees, and insiders, and studies their online activities and discussion topics to demonstrate their differential roles as members of healthcare virtual communities. Originality/value - Most of the earlier works that are focused on virtual communities have been conducted at the conceptual level. In this paper a priori user segments in healthcare virtual communities are empirically profiled. Based on the findings, managerial implications for healthcare virtual communities are formulated.

The goal of this study was to analyse the frequency of participation, factors that influence participation, and strategies used to assess the value and credibility of content in simulation-based healthcare education VCoPs. A sequential mixed-methods approach was used to assess participation and content assessment factors for a sample of 100 online survey respondents and five semi-structured interviews. Participation frequency was directly observed in 11 simulation-based education VCoPs for a one-year period between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2015. Simulation-based healthcare education VCoPs that were hosted on LinkedIn had poor user engagement compared to VCoPs hosted as independent discussion forums. Qualitative analysis suggested that the perceived unmoderated and commercial nature of LinkedIn VCoPs may have driven low participation rates. Factors that were empirically associated with community participation rates included platform ease of use, trust in the community, direct and indirect personal benefits, self-efficacy and psychological safety. In this study, VCoPs participants rarely engaged in a systematic process of content credibility and value assessment. Rather, heuristic shortcuts were leveraged to assess content, including reputation, enforcement, self-confirmation, expectancy violation, and persuasive intent.
