Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Method of Revelation The first part of this volume is composed of a series of Articles which were written at the request of the editor of The Century Magazine, and have lately been that periodical. They have now been carefully revised and somewhat enlarged. The additions do not cover a great deal of space, but they will contribute, as I hope, to the better elucida tion of the subject. The concluding portion of the volume comprises a number of Essays on important topics in New Testament criticism which are briefly touched upon in the preceding chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way: The Nature and Means of Revelation The study of the Bible in the light of modern research has yielded results of great value: among other things it has led to a more discriminating criticism of the text of Scripture, and to a clearer understanding of its literary history. The modern critic has learned to approach his object with directness, in the interest of truth, and a closer scrutiny of historic remains is gradually freeing the mind from some beliefs which had become almost a superstition. Nevertheless there are certain tendencies in the prevalent methods of investigation, which, when applied to biblical criticism and scriptural exegesis, need a corrective. Recent naturalistic methods, having in some degree assumed the character of a reaction against the extreme supernaturalism of older estimates of the Bible, tend to subordinate Revelation to the historic elements of Scripture. This is manifestly a reversal of the old order of thought, and it cannot be doubted that the reaction itself is running to an extreme, and needs a counteracting check by another mode of approach. It is founded upon the nature, use, and functions of its emblems, and upon the illustrations, given by the prophet himself. Thus explained, these emblems represent to us the true condition of the Church, during eighteen centuries, and all the important events of history, in such a manner, that, with the monuments of history which we now possess, it would be impossible for us to represent the same events, in figurative language, clearer and better, than that of the prophecy itself. There is, then, no other explanation to be given of this prophecy, - and if, against my belief, there is another, let these upon whom weigh the curses of this book, hasten to give it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation In ordinary circumstances one who undertakes to comment upon a book of the New Testament may be justly expected to make every effort to explain each successive clause and each difficult expression of the book on which he writes. My aim in the following Commentary is rather to catch the general import and object of the Revelation of St. John considered as a whole. The latter purpose indeed cannot be attained unless the commentator has himself paid faithful attention to the former; but it is not necessary that the results of these inquiries should in every case be presented to the English reader. To him this book is for the most part a perplexity and enigma, and he would only be embarrassed by a multitude of details. It seemed well, therefore, to treat the book in its sections and paragraphs rather than verse by verse; and this is the course pursued in the following pages. The translation used is for the most part that of the Revised Version. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Revelation: Being an Examination Into the Nature and Contents of Scripture Revelation as Compared With Other Forms of Truth Tm: dificulty attending any investigation of the question regarding the mode in which spiritual truth is (what is termed) revealed to man cannot be exaggerated. It has been maintained, on the one hand, that there has been spiritual truth among men apart from what many are in the habit of regarding as a special revelation of it; and, on the other, it is asserted that all such spiritual knowledge is derived by tradition from some original special revelation, possibly from the Jewish. There are facts that have been held as countenancing both theories. In the remains of ancient mythologies, as well as in present religions other than the Christian, points of elevation, rising apparently to the height of genuine spiritual insight into spiritual truth, have been reached by seemingly independent means. While again, mingled with these, are to be found striking resemblances to many narrative portions of the Jewish and Chris tian revelations, forcibly suggesting to many minds some actual connection of the one with the other. But a more painstaking investigation of primitive forms Of_ thought, especially by means of comparative religion and comparative philology, has overthrown much that was formerly considered to give likelihood to both explanations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Revelation The work before the reader consists of lectures delivered in the ordinary course of ministry, taken in short hand, and now published for the second time. Much matter of a practical nature, due to the wants of the souls addressed, has been omitted; for which were substituted remarks of a more critical character, a few when the exposition was first printed, and now with considerably greater fulness and frequency. Mr. Elliott will find that his observations are subjected to an examination, always, I trust, friendly, but sometimes searching. He is not the man, however, to complain, because I have endeavoured, chapter by chapter, to bear in mind the capital points of the Historical system, which, through his able pen, has attained its neatest shape, with the most elaborate apparatus of evidence and argument in its favour. Of his zeal for truth, no less than of his general learning and minute research, specially in history and antiquities, it is hardly needful to say that any estimate of mine differs not from that shared by almost all who know himself and the Horae Apocalypticae. If I have spoken with plainness and decision, in matters which involve an adequate knowledge of the balance of testimony for and against disputed readings, or an accurate and comprehensive grasp of Scripture, in particular of prophecy, it is because I believe that these are his weaker points, and that his just reputation in some things might expose less instructed and indiscriminating admirers to be misled in others. Whether I have shown sufficient grounds for rejecting Historicalism, not as a partial accomplishment, but as the complete and exclusive fulfilment of the Apocalypse, it is not for me to say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence and Authority of Divine Revelation, Vol. 1 of 2: Being a View of the Testimony of the Law and the Prophets to the Messiah, With the Subsequent Testimonies The first edition of the following work having been long ago exhausted, a second would have been sooner published, had not the author been prevented by other engagements from making those alterations and additions which seemed necessary to the completion of his original plan. The nature of that plan, and the manner of its execution, are explained in the following Intro duction. Several new Chapters are now added, and many sources of evidence more fully exa mined. Instead of being a Book merely supple mentary to those which have already occupied the same ground, the Author has all along aimed at an object, not in the contemplation of the great majority of those who have chiefly distinguished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Book of Revelation In offering to the public another edition of the present work, I feel called upon to express my gratitude for the approbation with which it has been met; which has been far more general and decided than I, as a new writer, on a very difficult subject, had any reason to expect. Persons of different religious denominations, and many of them entire strangers to me, and to whom I must have been wholly unknown before my work came into their hands, have been pleased to speak in the most encouraging terms of my labors. I wish here distinctly to state, what was intimated in the preface to the first edition, that this work was prepared not so much for learned theologians, as for the great mass of educated and thinking minds. It has afforded me not a little satisfaction to learn, that it has assisted some such in reading to their profit a portion of God's word, which before was vailed in impenetrable mystery. In this edition those errors and blemishes which, owing to my distance from the press, much to my annoyance, crept into the first, have been carefully corrected. I have also taken the liberty to make a slight change in the title-page by dropping an expression, which, from the use that has been made of it, might make a false impression on the mind of one who should allow himself to judge of the character of the book from merely reading the title. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation: A Series of Expositions These lectures were projected, and more than half of them delivered to the people it is my happiness to serve in the Gospel, before I had any thought of their seeing the light in their present form. It was only after many entreaties on the part of others, and much hesitation on my own, that I consented to their publication. And this, not because of misgivings as to the soundness of the views advanced, but rather from a deep and unaffected consciousness of my unworthiness to deal adequately with so exalted a theme. Yet even a little help may be welcome to some and I was anxious that those who had heard these lectures should be able to review, as a whole, that exposition which had, of course, been brought before them in separate parts, and at intervals extending over several months.
