Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Authority of Conscience The Swarthmore Lectureship was established by the Woodbrooke Extension Committee, at a meeting held December 9th, 1907: the minute of the Committee providing for "an annual lecture on some subject relating to the message and work of the Society of Friends." The name "Swarthmore" was chosen in memory of the home of Margaret Fox, which was always open to the earnest seeker after Truth, and from which loving words of sympathy and substantial material help were sent to fellow-workers. The Lectureship has a two-fold purpose: first, to interpret further to the members of the Society of Friends their Message and Mission; and, secondly, to bring before the public the spirit, the aims and the fundamental principles of the Friends. The Lectures have been delivered on the evening preceding the assembly of the Friends' Yearly Meeting in each year. The present Lecture was delivered on the evening preceding the Conference of all Friends in August, 1920. A complete list of previous Lectures, as published in book form, will be found at the beginning of this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conscience plays a central role in our moral lives. We have all felt the pangs of conscience when we fail to obey it; we are terrified by those who lack it; and we look to it as a moral guide, often using it to justify our actions. Yet there is little understanding of what it is, how it operates, and what justifications we have for obeying it.
Book Synopsis The World Within and the Nature and Authority of Conscience by : Rufus M. Jones
Download or read book The World Within and the Nature and Authority of Conscience written by Rufus M. Jones and published by In Exile Publications. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Jones's two books, The World Within and The Nature and Authority of Conscience, are compiled for the first time into one volume because the two pursue the topic of the soul for two important reasons. First, Jones's two books enlighten us to the idea that the soul's proper function is the basis for a healthy conscience. Second, according to Jones, a materialistic world-view, which claims there is no proof for the existence of the soul, is without sufficient reasonable evidence to do so. Contrary to this materialistic view, Jones's two books reinstate the validity of the soul, in forming our conscience, our behaviours, and therefore our lives.

Download or read book Ethics for A-Level written by Mark Dimmock and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does pleasure have to do with morality? What role, if any, should intuition have in the formation of moral theory? If something is ‘simulated’, can it be immoral? This accessible and wide-ranging textbook explores these questions and many more. Key ideas in the fields of normative ethics, metaethics and applied ethics are explained rigorously and systematically, with a vivid writing style that enlivens the topics with energy and wit. Individual theories are discussed in detail in the first part of the book, before these positions are applied to a wide range of contemporary situations including business ethics, sexual ethics, and the acceptability of eating animals. A wealth of real-life examples, set out with depth and care, illuminate the complexities of different ethical approaches while conveying their modern-day relevance. This concise and highly engaging resource is tailored to the Ethics components of AQA Philosophy and OCR Religious Studies, with a clear and practical layout that includes end-of-chapter summaries, key terms, and common mistakes to avoid. It should also be of practical use for those teaching Philosophy as part of the International Baccalaureate. Ethics for A-Level is of particular value to students and teachers, but Fisher and Dimmock’s precise and scholarly approach will appeal to anyone seeking a rigorous and lively introduction to the challenging subject of ethics. Tailored to the Ethics components of AQA Philosophy and OCR Religious Studies.

Book excerpt: There is an increasing number of divisive issues in our world today, all of which require great discernment. Thankfully, God has given each of us a conscience to align our wills with his and help us make wise decisions. Examining all thirty New Testament passages that touch on the conscience, Andrew Naselli and J. D. Crowley help readers get to know their consciences—a largely neglected topic—and engage with other Christians who hold different convictions. Offering guiding principles and answering critical questions about how the conscience works and how to care for it, this book shows how the conscience impacts our approach to church unity, ministry, and more.

Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Morality by : Ezekiel Gilman Robinson
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Morality written by Ezekiel Gilman Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1888 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been made for a service which no one of its predecessors could be persuaded to render. It embodies the lectures its author has given to his classes in Ethics, and is, what it purports to be, distinctively a text-book. It touches existing controversies only so far as is necessary for the elucidation or defence of its own positions. The aim has been to condense rather than to expand its discussions, and to diminish rather than to multiply its pages. - Preface.
Book Synopsis On Conscience by : Pope Benedict XVI
Download or read book On Conscience written by Pope Benedict XVI and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared and co-published by the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philedelphia, this book is a combination of two lengthy essays written by Cardianl Ratzinger and delivered in talks when he was the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Fatih. Both talks deal with the importance of conscience and its exercise in particular circumstances. Ratzinger's reflections show that contemporary debates over the nature of conscience have deep historical and philosophicsl roots. He say that a person is bound to act in accord with his conscience, but he makes it clear that there must be reliable, proven sources for the judgement of conscience in moral issues, other than the subjective reflections of each individual.
