In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Igneous Rocks The plan of the present work is that of selecting from the large body of observed facts bearing on the identification of rocks with the microscope those which it is desirable for the beginner to get command of in the course of his early studies. The work is intended as an introduction to the exhaustive treatises on the subject. Inasmuch as the student invariably begins his laboratory work with the igneous rocks, these alone, with their constituent minerals, have been considered. Such a method of attack at once greatly limits the field on its mineralogical side, and permits of an extended treatment of determinative methods. In the discussion of the characteristics of a given rock-making mineral the aim has been to impart at the outset the most important diagnostic information regarding it. In the tables for desk use a fairly extended enumeration of the properties of the minerals of igneous rocks is given, but here also emphasis has been laid, by the use of bold face type, upon their more important characteristics from the point of view of the beginner who has to learn to identify them. The text dealing with the igneous type rocks is devoted entirely to setting forth the assemblages of facts of discriminative significance which are made use of in recognizing them in thin sections. Such a treatment can make no claim to completeness of exposition from the point of view of the geologist. The student will not, however, come to regard rocks merely as objects which can be classified by the recognition of their mineralogy and structures. It is believed that by emphasizing their differences the beginner can most quickly be put in possession of a knowledge of their complexity, and be led to take the interest in them which the petrologist must feel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Petrology: The Igneous Rocks A Little book that should briefly describe the mineral constituents and internal structures of the Igneous Rocks, their mode of occurrence at the surface and their origin beneath the crust of the earth, has long been a desideratum among English text-books of Science. With the view of filling this gap this little book has been prepared; and it is hoped that it will be found useful, not only as an introduction to the subject, but also as a handy work of reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrography and Geology of the Igneous Rocks of the Highwood Mountains, Montana In the following work will be found the results of field and labora tory studies of the igneous rocks of the Highwood Mountains of Mon tana. The field work was carried out by Mr. Walter H. Weed and the writer, chiefly during the latter part of the summer of 1894, though the eastern part of the area was again revisited for a few days in 1896. The north-central part of the area, around the Shonkin and Arnoux stocks, was not visited by the writer, as this part of the work was done by Mr. Weed after the writer was called from the field. As the field work in petrology was incidental to the areal mapping of the region on the base map of 4 miles to the inch for the Fort Benton folio of the United States Geological Survey, under charge of Mr. Weed, the time that could be devoted to a careful study of details was necessarily limited. Future studies of the district may therefore bring out minor features which were not seen or which are but briefly treated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Petrography: With Special Reference to the Igneous Rocks It was my original intention to treat of the sedimentary rocks and crystalline schists in the same volume, but when I approached the consideration of these rocks I found that the space available was far too small for the purpose. I accordingly determined, notwithstanding the fact that several plates had been prepared, to postpone all detailed reference to these rocks, for the present, in the hope that I might be able to return to the subject on some future occasion. The plates that have been prepared are, however, issued with the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tertiary Igneous Rocks of Skye The Tertiary Volcanic region of the West of Scotland is well known to be of exceptional interest from many points of view, and on this account my predecessor, Sir A. Geikie, determined that a typical portion of the region should be mapped and described in great detail. The district comprising the central mountain group of Skye was selected by him, and the services of Mr. Harker were secured in order that the actual survey and the petrographical work might be carried out by the same officer. The present memoir is, therefore, the result of work which was planned and in great part executed under the direction of Sir A. Geikie, who has himself contributed very largely to our knowledge of the selected area, and who has taken from first to last special interest in Mr. Barkers researches. The district is one which has attracted the attention of many distinguished geologists from the days of Macculloch down to recent years. The main outlines of the geology are, therefore, miliar to students of the science, but in view of the publication of this volume some of the salient features of the development of research may here be referred to. MaccuUoch sclassic work showed that the basalts of the plateaux and the eruptive masses pierce and overlie the Oolitic strata, and are therefore younger than the Jurassic rocks. The discovery of plant remains at Ardtun, in Mull, announced by the Duke of Argyll in 1851, marked an important advance, for they were regarded by Professor E.Forbes as proving the Tertiary age of the basalts with which they are associated. At the same time Forbes was led to the conclusion, from the evidence at Loch Staffin, in Skye, that the basaltic lavas are there contemporaneous with the Oolitic strata. Following the opinion of Professor Forbes, in his earliest investigations Sir A. Geikie inferred that the basaltic lavas of Skye are not younger than some late part of the Jurassic period, and he further contended that the gabbros of that island are of Archaean age from the striking resemblance of the banded types to some of the ancient gneisses of the North-West Highlands. In 1871 appeared Zirkel svaluable description of the petrology of the igneous rocks of Skye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mineral Composition and Geological Occurrence of Certain Igneous Rocks in the Yellowstone National Park The mass of Sepulchre Mountain with the body of intra sive rocks at its west base is separated from Electric Peak by a profound fault that trends north and south, and has thrown the higher surface accumulations of Sepulchre Mountain below the level of the Cretaceous strata with their deep-seated bodies of intruded rocks. The eruptive rocks at the western edge of the Sepulchre Mountain mass, and directly east of the plane of faulting, carry large blocks of black Cretaceous shale, showing that they have broken up, through the same strata as those forming Electric Peak. The effect of the faulting on the eruptive rocks along the east side of the fault is plainly seen. The rocks are shattered and fractured into small pieces, held together by the pulverized portion. They indicate that the early Huronian continent had not been reduced to a base-level at the time of the deposition of the early Paleozoic formations. It is very probable that some of the outcrops, at least, rose a thousand feet above the shore line of the early Pale ozoic sea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Micropetrology for Beginners: An Introduction to the Use of the Microscope in the Examination of Thin Sections of Igneous Rocks The great increase in the popularity of Petrology in recent years has made the want of a practical elementary text-book more keenly felt, especially by teachers in evening technical schools. The subject is required for Inter. In Geology (london) but unfortunately it is impossible to gain the necessary practical information on the handling of the petrological microscope either from the general text-books on Geology or the specialised books on Petrology. The latter, as far as England is concerned, are few in number, expensive, and they do not give the elemen tary practical information that a student needs although, on the other hand, they go very much further into the subject thanis advisable for a beginner. This little book has been written to bridge over this gap and to give the student and the amateur microscopist that practical knowledge of Micropetrology which hitherto he.
