Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural and Civil History of Vermont, Vol. 1 of 2 Three centuries have passed away since America was first discovered by Colume bus. From that time until now, the all'airs of America have engaged the attention of historians and philosophers. The natural productions of this continent, have been one object of general inquiry. Among the Spanish writers, there are some good essays on the natural history of the southern parts of America. In Canada, some of the physicians and Jesuits were attentive to the natural productions of that part of the continent and have left some valuable pieces on the natural history of New France. This kind of knowledge was not much attended to, by the first settlers of the British colonies and we' have but few of their ancient writings, in which it was contem plated at all. Obliged to depend upon transient and partial accounts, the best writer upon natural history, M. De Button, has fallen into many mis takes respecting the natural productions of A merica, which, more accurate observations would have corrected. The subject instead of being fully explored, is yet a treasure but little ex; amined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appendix to the History of Vermont, Natural, Civil and Statistical, 1853 When the History of Vermont, to which this is an Appendix, was published, in 1842, the boundary line between the United States and the British provinces was um settled, and in dispute between the two governments but in the latter part of the summer of that year, the matter was ami eably arranged by a treaty, formed by Mr. Webster and Lord Ashburton, and ratified by the two governments. The northern boundary of the state was intended to be along the 45th parallel of latitude, and was supposed to be on that parallel till the sur. Vey of 1818 proved the 45th parallel to be some distance to the southward of what had been previously regarded as the northern boundary of the state, cutting off a strip through the whole width, varying from one-fourth of a mile to a few rods. By the treaty, the northern boundary of the state was established upon the old well known line, without reference to the 45th parallel. This line was marked in 1845, by cutting away the timber, where it passed through forests, and by putting up cast iron posts at short distances through its whole length. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Vermont This volume has been written to give to the public an accurate account of the early history of Vermont when it was called New Hampshire Grants and New Connecticut, and down to the time that the State was admitted into the Union in 1791. The writer has not created any fiction for the book, but facts have been related that are more interesting and useful than fiction, to Ver mouters. It may lack the polish that some literary writers would give it. The most of it has been prepared for the press during the past year in bits of time that the writer has been able to snatch from pressing professional business. The reader will find accurately stated the action of the hardy pioneers that resulted in establishing the State amid the greatest difficulties in a dense wilder ness, beset with dangers from hostile Indians, and bitter Opposition from the people of neigh boring territory, and the British army. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography, History and Civil Government of Vermont This book has been prepared as a text book for schools. The work has been done with the conviction that while fullness is desirable, brevity is necessary. In the Geography an attempt has been made to exhibit Vermont in its relations to other portions Of the country, both contiguous and remote. TO that end, three maps were introduced. The first and second Of these show the position of the State with respect to some Of the great, routes of travel across the continent; while the third shows some commercial rela tions Of high importance to our industries, and equally it shows our relation to some of the chief centers of American civilization. The next four maps illustrate different phases of our Geography. The map entitled Political Divisions shows every town and gore in the State, the probate dis tricts, the counties, the congressional districts. The last map illustrates the history that follows. It is believed that this use of several maps has decided advantages over any larger maps that could be introduced in such a book. The description of the mountains and valleys and of the waters of the State is the result of considerable Observation and some reading; and it is believed to present the funda mental conceptions necessary to a clear understanding Of our Geography and History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of Vermont: An Address Delivered at Boston, Before the Boston Society of Natural History, June, 1850 The pickerel, not delighting in the cold spring water of the highland streams, appear never to have availed themselves, as they probably mrght have done, of these facilities for inter-communication; for the species are well known to have been originally unlike on the two sides of the mountains - the &cx reticulatus being confined to the east side, and the E902: estor to the west side. The estor, it is true, is now found in Connecticut river, and is taken somewhat plentifully at Bellows Falls; but it is equally true, that he found his way there by human means, and in modern times, Pickerel were taken from the west side of the mountains and placed in a pond, on the east side, in the south part Of Windsor county, whose outlet is a tributary of the Con necticut. From this pond they descended into the Connecticut, where they have multiplied, and are now Often taken weighing several pounds.
