Download or read book Be Recorder written by Carmen Giménez and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry • Finalist for the PEN Open Book Award • Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize Carmen Giménez Smith dares to demand renewal for a world made unrecognizable Be Recorder offers readers a blazing way forward into an as yet unmade world. The many times and tongues in these poems investigate the precariousness of personhood in lines that excoriate and sanctify. Carmen Giménez Smith turns the increasingly pressing urge to cry out into a dream of rebellion—against compromise, against inertia, against self-delusion, and against the ways the media dream up our complacency in an America that depends on it. This reckoning with self and nation demonstrates that who and where we are is as conditional as the fact of our compliance: “Miss America from sea to shining sea / the huddled masses have a question / there is one of you and all of us.” Be Recorder is unrepentant and unstoppable, and affirms Giménez Smith as one of the most vital and vivacious poets of our time.

Book Synopsis Playing the Soprano Recorder by : Lois Veenhoven Guderian
Download or read book Playing the Soprano Recorder written by Lois Veenhoven Guderian and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for general music classes, group and private instruction, and self-learners, Playing the Soprano Recorder provides teachers and students with a sequential and musical approach to learning Western music notation and soprano recorder playing. In addition, each lesson provides opportunities to apply, in creative ways, the notation and concepts they learn and also to support the development of creative thinking and the tools needed for composing music in Western notation. The teaching materials and pieces presented in the text are extremely musical and satisfying to learn from the first lesson to the last. Students enjoy the richness of ensemble playing. In addition to a practice/performance music website, written piano accompaniments for all 76 pieces are included, many with optional, additional instrumental parts. The words of songs are included for nurturing both singing and instrument playing. The text can be used successfully in multiple and varied settings of teaching and learning, making collaborations between teachers in school, private, after school enrichment, and outreach programs easy. Usage is flexible; as excellent as a college text in teacher preparation and adult general music classes as in third - eighth grade classes due to the "go to your own pace" comprehensive instructional format of the book. Performance of the beautiful ensemble pieces is a natural and desired outcome of "players" learning. Due to the selection of pieces, there are many possibilities for interdisciplinary education as well as expansions of and links to other areas within the discipline of music. All nine of the National Standards for Music Education are supported in this approach. https://textbooks.rowman.com/supplements/guderian/

Book Synopsis American Crusade by : Benjamin J. Wetzel
Download or read book American Crusade written by Benjamin J. Wetzel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is a war a holy crusade? And when does theology cause Christians to condemn violence? In American Crusade, Benjamin Wetzel argues that the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I shared a cultural meaning for white Protestant ministers in the United States, who considered each conflict to be a modern-day crusade. American Crusade examines the "holy war" mentality prevalent between 1860 and 1920, juxtaposing mainline Protestant support for these wars with more hesitant religious voices: Catholics, German-speaking Lutherans, and African American Methodists. The specific theologies and social locations of these more marginal denominations made their ministries highly critical of the crusading mentality. Religious understandings of the nation, both in support of and opposed to armed conflict, played a major role in such ideological contestation. Wetzel's book questions traditional periodizations and suggests that these three wars should be understood as a unit. Grappling with the views of America's religious leaders, supplemented by those of ordinary people, American Crusade provides a fresh way of understanding the three major American wars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book Synopsis Illusions of Emancipation by : Joseph P. Reidy
Download or read book Illusions of Emancipation written by Joseph P. Reidy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As students of the Civil War have long known, emancipation was not merely a product of Lincoln's proclamation or of Confederate defeat in April 1865. It was a process that required more than legal or military action. With enslaved people fully engaged as actors, emancipation necessitated a fundamental reordering of a way of life whose implications stretched well beyond the former slave states. Slavery did not die quietly or quickly, nor did freedom fulfill every dream of the enslaved or their allies. The process unfolded unevenly. In this sweeping reappraisal of slavery's end during the Civil War era, Joseph P. Reidy employs the lenses of time, space, and individuals' sense of personal and social belonging to understand how participants and witnesses coped with drastic change, its erratic pace, and its unforeseeable consequences. Emancipation disrupted everyday habits, causing sensations of disorientation that sometimes intensified the experience of reality and sometimes muddled it. While these illusions of emancipation often mixed disappointment with hope, through periods of even intense frustration they sustained the promise that the struggle for freedom would result in victory.
