Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contradicting the widely held but false belief that all Latinos are Catholic, this book offers a concise one-volume introduction to America's Latino Protestants, the fastest growing segment of U.S. Protestantism today. Los Protestantes: An Introduction to Latino Protestantism in the United States, the first to provide a broad introduction to this rapidly growing population. At its core is an exploration of the group's demographics, denominational tendencies, and potential for continued growth. Current information is supported by a survey of the history of Latino Protestants in the United States, which dates back to the efforts of missionaries in the mid-19th century. Los Protestantes brings together data from formerly disparate studies of various aspects of the community to create an insightful overview. The work presents brief descriptions of principal denominations and organizations among Latino Protestants. It notes marked differences that separate Latino Protestants from other U.S. Protestants, and it examines an evolving Protestant/Latino ethno-religious identity. Readers will come away from this study more clearly understanding the current state of Latino Protestantism in the United States, as well as where Latino Protestants fit in the overall picture of U.S. religion.

Book excerpt: This is a dual-language book, formatted with an English translation in the front and Spanish translation in the back. The Hispanic/Latino community is a blessing from God for the Church and for our country. During the last few decades in particular, Hispanics/Latinos have reinvigorated the life and mission of thousands of parishes and other Catholic institutions and organizations. Missionary Disciples Going Forth with Joy: National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry addresses the entire Church in the United States and seeks to strengthen the Church's response to the Hispanic/Latino presence, while embracing and fostering the contributions of Hispanic/Latino Catholics as missionary disciples serving the entire People of God. This document from the U.S. bishops comes in direct response to the priorities, recommendations, and pastoral insights generated during the V National Encuentro for Hispanic/Latino Ministry. Given the ongoing growth of the Hispanic/Latino population across the country, the establishment of Hispanic/Latino ministry in more parishes and other pastoral settings is a high priority. Included in the National Pastoral Plan are the following: The vision and pastoral guidelines that provide a strong foundation for Hispanic/Latino ministry intended for pastoral ministers and educators Pastoral strategies and priorities for dioceses, parishes, regions, and other pastoral settings for pastoral ministers at various levels of experience in Hispanic/Latino ministry National objectives and activities, led by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, for implementation over the next ten years Este es un libro en dos idiomas, formateado con una traducción al inglés al principio y una traducción al español al final.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus made claims about redemptive community throughout his ministry when he called people to extravagant grace. Even in the midst of the oppression of his day, Jesus preached and taught that redemptive community was possible if his followers would simply stop hoarding, hiding, and excluding. What a prophetic word for today in the midst of modern day oppression and fears of scarcity! In this edited volume, in honor of religious education scholars Jack Seymour and Margaret Ann Crain, eight of their PhD advisees--each scholars in their own right--join Seymour and Crain to lay out their vision of redemptive community. Rooted in their own scholarship, each contributor proposes ways in which Jesus' vision of redemptive community can become reality in churches and congregations, and in our larger world. In addition to essays by Jack Seymour and Margaret Ann Crain, scholars contributing to this volume include Dori Grinenko Baker, Reginald Blount, Evelyn L. Parker, Mai-Anh Le Tran, Leah Gunning Francis, Carmichael Crutchfield, Debora B.A. Junker, and Denise Janssen. The foreword by Mary Elizabeth Moore and afterword by Seymour and Crain set the volume in the larger context of the church and academy.

Book excerpt: Depending on how a congregation is organized, the ministry area may be called global ministries, mission or outreach ministries. The role of this ministry area is to develop a continuous, year-round program of mission education. Leadership of this ministry area identifies the needs of the community, country, and world and engages the congregation in mission opportunities that seek to address these needs. It also seeks to expand your congregation’s mission and benevolence budget and ensure that your congregation is provided every opportunity to participate financially in God’s mission through the church. This guideline is designed to help implement the work of the ministry area. This is one of the twenty-six Guidelines that cover church leadership areas including Church Council and Small Membership Church; the administrative areas of Finance and Trustees; and ministry areas focused on nurture, outreach, and witness including Worship, Evangelism, Stewardship, and Christian Education, age-level ministries, Communications, and more. It was carrying out its mission in an environment charged with dynamic change. To fully understand the history of Methodism in Southern California, one has to find a way to allow one’s mind to alter as far as possible into the conditions and events of the period. As we are so keenly aware today, these circumstances determine the success or failure of the church to carry out its mission. While Methodism was an early arrival in California, within fifty years, the environment was changing to one that was highly competitive. In addition, the political environment was changing to a more conservative one while Methodism’s leadership and ministerial training of its clergy were more liberal. Added to these external complexities, there were internal difficulties unique to Methodism that needed to be resolved. The task ahead is to examine the challenges and accomplishments of California-Pacific Conference from 1945 to the present.
