Book Synopsis NIH State-Of-the-Science Statement on Symptom Management in Cancer by : National Institutes of Health
Download or read book NIH State-Of-the-Science Statement on Symptom Management in Cancer written by National Institutes of Health and published by . This book was released on 2002-07-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIH Consensus Development and State-of-the-Science Conferences are convened to evaluate the available scientific evidence on a given biomedical or public health topic, often with the purpose of resolving a particular controversial issue in clinical or public health practice. The resulting NIH Consensus and State-of the-Science Statements are intended to advance understanding of the issue in question and to be useful to health professionals and the public for informed decision-making. Each NIH Consensus or State-of-the Science Statement is prepared by a nonadvocate, non-Federal panel of experts, based on (1) presentations by investigators working in areas relevant to the consensus questions during a 2-day public session; (2) questions and statements from conference attendees during open discussion periods that are part of the public session; and (3) closed deliberations by the panel during the remainder of the second day and morning of the third. This statement is an independent report of the panel and is not a policy statement of the NIH or the Federal Government. The statement reflects the panel's assessment of medical knowledge available at the time the statement was written. Thus, it provides a "snapshot in time" of the state of knowledge on the conference topic. When reading the statement, keep in mind that new knowledge is inevitably accumulating through medical research.

Book Synopsis Cancer Symptom Science by : Charles S. Cleeland
Download or read book Cancer Symptom Science written by Charles S. Cleeland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer Symptom Science is the first interdisciplinary compilation of research on the mechanisms underlying the expression of cancer-related symptoms. It presents innovations in clinical, animal and in vitro research, research methods in brain imaging, and statistical-descriptive approaches to understanding the mechanistic basis of symptom expression. This volume also provides perspectives from patients, government and industry. By collecting and synthesizing the developing threads of new approaches to understanding cancer-related symptoms, the book promotes a pioneering framework for merging behavioral and biological disciplines to clarify mechanisms of symptom evolution, incorporating new technologies, testing novel agents for symptom control, and improving patient functioning and quality of life both during and after cancer treatment. With an expert editorial team led by Charles S. Cleeland, an internationally-recognized leader in cancer pain assessment and treatment, this is essential reading for surgical, clinical and medical oncologists, academic researchers, and pharmaceutical companies developing new agents to control symptom expression.

Moore, editor This book takes both a biobehavioral and a lifespan approach to understanding long-term and chronic pain, and intervening to optimize patients’ functioning. Rich in clinical diversity, chapters explore emerging areas of interest (computer-based interventions, fibromyalgia, stress), ongoing concerns (cancer pain, low back pain), and special populations (pediatric, elderly, military). This coverage provides readers with a knowledge base in assessment, treatment, and management that is up to date, practice strengthening, and forward looking. Subject areas featured in the Handbook include: ▪ Patient-practitioner communication ▪ Assessment tools and strategies ▪ Common pain conditions across the lifespan ▪ Biobehavioral mechanisms of chronic pain ▪ Pharmaceutical, neurological, and rehabilitative interventions ▪ Psychosocial, complementary/alternative, narrative, and spiritual approaches ▪ Ethical issue and future directions With the rise of integrative perspective and the emphasis on overall quality of life rather than discrete symptoms, pain management is gaining importance across medical disciplines. Handbook of Pain and Palliative Care stands out as a one-stop reference for a range of professionals, including health practitioners specializing in pain management or palliative care, clinical and health psychologists, public health professionals, and clinicians and administrators in long-term care and hospice.
Book Synopsis Cancer Care for the Whole Patient by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.
Book Synopsis Pain Syndromes--from Recruitment to Returning Troops by : B. K. Wiederhold
Download or read book Pain Syndromes--from Recruitment to Returning Troops written by B. K. Wiederhold and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been shown that those who have served in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at increased risk for pain syndromes. Research suggests that this may result from their "wounds of war." Some wounds may be "invisible," such as depression, stress, and chronic pain, while others, such as physical disabilities, are more obvious. In October 2011, twenty-seven scientists and representatives from NATO and partner countries met in Südkärnten, Austria for a three-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled "Wounds of War: Pain Syndromes - From Recruitment to Returning Troops."The aim of this publication, which presents papers from that workshop, is to critically assess the existing knowledge and to identify directions for future actions. The book addresses four key questions:1. Vulnerability to Pain syndromes: Are certain types of people at a higher risk for pain syndromes (background, ethnicity, childhood trauma, etc.)?2. Diagnosis and Assessment Issues of Pain Syndromes: Which methods are used to diagnose and assess pain?3. Treatment of Pain Syndromes: What are the latest treatment and therapy opportunities for soldiers who experience pain syndromes?4. Clinical Updates on Pain Syndromes: What can we learn from recent clinical updates on pain syndromes? ...
