Book excerpt: During His ministration on the Mount, Christ exhorted His disciples to choose the narrow gate, not the broad one, because only the narrow path and the narrow gate lead to eternal life. Yet few individuals find it. How can we find it? To take the path towards eternal life we must embrace a change to godly living. Tomorrow might be too late. This means we must obey God's commandments, have hearts of forgiveness and be filled with the Holy Spirit, in fear of our Lord. There is no room for pride in the Kingdom of Heaven. The path towards the narrow gate can only be achieved by total submission to His mandates.

Book excerpt: 'It was with awe That I beheld Fresh leaves, green leaves, Bright in the sun' When the Japanese haiku master Basho composed The Narrow Road to the Deep North, he was an ardent student of Zen Buddhism, setting off on a series of travels designed to strip away the trappings of the material world and bring spiritual enlightenment. He writes of the seasons changing, the smell of the rain, the brightness of the moon and the beauty of the waterfall, through which he sensed the mysteries of the universe. These writings not only chronicle Basho's travels, but they also capture his vision of eternity in the transient world around him. Translated with an Introduction by Nobuyuki Yuasa

Book excerpt: Synopsis: Deciding to walk away from God did not come easily or quickly for Lin Wilder. Nor did the decision to return. As she explains: Exactly how much of my personal life should be included in this book has been a tough decision to make. This is, after all, the story of a conversion, not an autobiography. Many of my choices, judgments, and their consequences remain painful, even humiliating to revisit, writing them down, even more so. Initially, I questioned the relevance of describing elements of my career, education and relationships with men- in short, my pre-Catholic world in detail. Since I did not convert until midlife, there are a lot of territories to cover. But I realize that my use of the term 'lost years' makes no sense unless I place them squarely in the context of the person I was then. Without the details of my early life, unpleasant as they are to recall, much less write, this sense of drifting and of aimlessness are merely words which lack substance. They are unidimensional. In talks to church groups about life with and without my faith, I frequently used 'ground' while I stomped the floor I stood on, forcefully, as I worked to convey what is gained and lost with and without faith. Faith and all which accompanies religion like regular church attendance and a belief that there is something greater here, someone present, informs our decisions and choices, even our goals. Just so, its absence widens all boundaries. More and more is acceptable. This, at times, brutally honest story of the reasons for Wilder's walk away from God, then years later, return, cannot fail to provoke and challenge. Her decision to reveal intimate and painful details of the life lived during the years she refers to as 'lost' will cause even the most devoutly faithful reader to take a peek at the shadows of the self we hide from the world and from ourselves. Critique: An exceptionally candid account that is impressively well written, organized and presented, "Finding the Narrow Path: Patterns, Faith and Searching" is an inherently fascinating and consistently compelling account that is as informative and thoughtful as it is insightful and ultimately inspiring. While very highly recommended for Christian Studies reading lists, it should be noted that "Finding the Narrow Path" is also available in a Kindle format ($6.99). midwestbookreview.com/sbw/dec_16.htm#ChristianStudies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Narrow Way is an honest account of a life, fully lived, under God's all-seeing eye. Although a memoir, it is not a conventional one. No reader will like everything in this book, but every reader struggling with some aspect of life sexual abuse, marriage, militarism, prison, the loneliness of the American experience, the failure of democratic institutions, the quest for self-knowledge, the search for God can find something interesting and useful in it. Opening with an examination of the long-term damage done to sexually abused children, Part One covers the problems of marriage, the significance of dreams, art, and literature, an insight into suffering, an approach to understanding Scripture, and the social impact Jesus had on His society via teachings that we are still refusing to take seriously. In Part Two, the author gives an overview of the impact of the so-called "Enlightenment," a period that promised a better human type living in an improved world, but that brought the human family instead to non-stop, high-tech war-making, rampant resource consumption, and an on-coming social, environmental, and economic catastrophe precisely because Christians, seduced by the products of the machine, have steadily diluted their commitment to Christ, who showed us the "narrow way that leads to life." The Narrow Way the result of fifty years of hard study of the intellectual and social trends of the past 250 years is a challenging book. Starting where theologian Reinhold Niebuhr left off, it critiques the so-called American way of life and calls for change.

The is presently writing The Church in a Cultural Conflict. The reside in Prairieville, Louisiana and are an integral part of the Bethany World Prayer Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; where Jim serves as one of the Apostolic presbyters. "The Narrow Way" a Handbook on Discipleship takes a 'raw' convert into a lifestyle of discipleship beginning with his conversion and water baptism into a thorough training of Jesus' Character (some 50 aspects) to develop proper motives and attitudes. The disciple learns not only the Scriptural values of every aspect of the narrow way, but is also trained to strengthen them using the sixteen disciplines the early church practiced to allow the salvation experience to be enhanced - spirit, soul and body. The goal, of course, for every disciple is to serve God; but in the normal church experience that follows the American culture; it is usually a "fast track" that results in an uninformed and ill-prepared "leader" that ninety-five time out of one hundred - fails; usually causing the ill-trained member to leave the church and often his Lord. The book discusses the aspects and processes from which come true leaders-servants that are ready for Kingdom living.

Its time to grow up. Return: The Way of Perfect Love is a new version of an unpublished book written years ago by a father to his children with the hope of helping them build a combined personal, interpersonal, and spiritual lifea righteous lifeby answering some of lifes most important questions: Who is God? Why are there so many religions? Who is right? Can you be religiously faithful yet not righteous? What is the difference between righteousness and morality? What is a persons soul, and how does it interact with the body? How should we pray? What is spirituality? What is perfect love? Why is repentance important? What does it truly mean to be born again or born from above? What is our purpose for being alive? What is free will? Can people be perfect? What is humility? Book excerpt: Few books have made a greater impact, political as much as literary, than Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, perhaps the most famous of anti-war novels. Startling in its realism, moving in its humanity and banned and burned in Germany by the Nazis, it was an international publishing sensation. But who was Erich Maria Remarque? While the title of his masterpiece has entered the language as a catch-phrase, its author is virtually forgotten. In this biography, Hilton Tims attempts to reveal a man whose life was one of the most romantic and anguished of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: All You Want to Know About Hell breaks down the three most popular views on hell and tells us what the Bible really says about this terrifying and mystifying place. It is an undeniable fact that the very concept of hell is shrouded in mystery. We know what books and movies tell us hell is like, but we're left with so many questions. Is hell simply a place where sinners are sent to suffer for their sins, or is it more than that? How could a loving God send anyone to hell? Does the Bible give us a clear and consistent picture of hell? What does the existence of hell tell us about God's character? Steve Gregg--author of Revelation: Four Views--will take you on a tour of the three most popular views on hell and walk you through a clear explanation of what Scripture really says. From the "traditional" view of hell as a place of eternal torment to the early Christian view that hell is a place of suffering intended to purge sin and to bring about repentance, no other book gives such in-depth biblical insight into the truths about hell that are hidden in all the hype. All You Want to Know About Hell is an accessible and interesting read for laypeople, pastors, and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: Enlightenment Unfolds is a sequel to Kaz Tanahashi's previous collection, Moon in a Dewdrop, which has become a primary source on Dogen for Western Zen students. Dogen Zenji (1200–1253) is unquestionably the most significant religious figure in Japanese history. Founder of the Soto school of Zen (which emphasizes the practice of zazen or sitting meditation), he was a prolific writer whose works have remained popular for six hundred years. Enlightenment Unfolds presents even more of the incisive and inspiring writings of this seminal figure, focusing on essays from his great life work, Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, as well as poems, talks, and correspondence, much of which appears here in English for the first time. Tanahashi has brought together his own translations of Dogen with those of some of the most respected Zen teachers and writers of our own day, including Reb Anderson, Edward Espe Brown, Norman Fisher, Gil Fronsdal, Blanche Hartman, Jane Hirschfield, Daniel Leighton, Alan Senauke, Katherine Thanas, Mel Weitzman, and Michael Wenger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can buy The Narrow Path to Expansive Vision online at any major online bookstore, or through the Westbow website." We live in a country deeply divided politically and culturally, and the chasm widens and deepens with each passing day. As a society, it seems like there is an increasing tendency to follow the wrong things and the wrong people. So where do we turn to find a leadership example in an “all about me” world? How do you live and lead a narrow-path (yet not narrow-minded) life in a wide-path world and society? You turn to the greatest leadership example in history: Jesus Christ. This may seem like an obvious answer, but it is not. In conducting original research for the book The Narrow Path to Expansive Vision, RD (Randy) Oostra completed a national online survey of business leaders, including those who identified as Christian leaders. One question on the survey asked those who identified as Christian leaders to name their top three leaders of all time. Only 13 percent mentioned Christ as one of their top three leaders. In addition, only 43 percent of these Christian leaders considered themselves to be servant leaders. As The Narrow Path to Expansive Vision unfolds, it weaves a narrative of Randy’s personal journey growing up in a rigorous Dutch Reformation background to his life as a CEO of a national health and well-being organization. Randy tells his story of how he has lived in and navigated through the science-based world of health care, as well as his frustrations with a Church leadership that frankly has not always been helpful in meeting the challenges he faced as a business leader, and in life in general. Based on these experiences, Randy offers a foundational approach to leadership inspired by the example of Christ. It is a hopeful message that both believers and non-believers will find meaningful and useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Paul Brunton's years spent with sages in Asia, The Wisdom of the Overself and its companion volume The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga were written at the request of these remarkable teachers, who recognized that Brunton had a significant role to play in the transmission of traditional wisdom to the West. Here is a profound re-creation of these teachings, brought to life and made accessible by Brunton's insights. In print since the 1940s, Brunton's works are considered to be among the most comprehensive, clear, and practical guides on the path to enlightenment. Brunton unfolds the grand vision for human development by investigating consciousness as the source of all experience; how to move from ego-centered life to the transcendent reality; the interplay of karma, free will, and grace; the nature of evil and suffering; how to awaken intuition and penetrative insight; the passage through death to rebirth; and psychic experiences and mystic visions. He also provides seven ultramystic exercises to open the door to higher consciousness, including a healing meditation on the sun; practices for transforming the future, dream, and sleep; and a meditation on the timeless self. These techniques lead to the deepest spiritual realizations—to the true "Wisdom of the Overself." This new edition has been updated to incorporate Brunton's final revisions. It includes a new foreword plus supplementary reading material selected from the author's archives by the Paul Brunton Philosophic Foundation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey To Enlightenment is a book for the truly sincere individual in search of spiritual progression. It comes from a true source remembered from counselors on a higher level who are interested in teaching mankind to not get so attached with the illusions on this plane. That we are only living in a shadow of a shadow of reality. That we can come to truths not by listening to others, but by going within our own God Self for the answers and getting in tune with our intuition. The journey into enlightenment is magical, but not gained by magic. It takes hard work and a deep commitment towards that aim. It takes the understanding that the hardest thing to overcome is also within. The ego is the part of us that wants control and we freely give it full reign. It is not until we can control our thoughts, learn to live in the silence and accept what is our life that we will come to our true selves.
