Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Name of the Deity in the Pentateuch Many have wondered why sometimes God, and sometimes lord is used to express the name of Deity, acting or speaking. Many theories have been advanced, but the simplest reason is to believe that each name in relation to the context has its own special meaning. The Hebrew word in the Bible translated God is Elohim, and Where the name lord occurs with capital letters it is the translation of the Hebrew word we call Jehovah. The following facts about these names are clearly defined. Elohim is never said to appear to anyone, except in an historical sense Gen. Xxxv. I, 7 with xxviii. And even there when the actual appearance is referred to it is Jehovah who appeared. Altars are built to Jehovah, not Elohim. The first time the name Jehovah occurs by itself is when Eve says, I have gotten a man (from) Jehovah (gen. Iv.i).
