The colony is rapidly taking on a new identity as a land where opportunities abound for those who are up to the challenge. Many prosper, while others prefer to tramp the endless bush and enjoy what the land has to offer, and still other turn to a life of crime. Into this wild land of rare beauty and constant change comes a quiet young orphan boy named Brennan. He knows nothing of his origins and his only family is an old lady who nurtures him into his teenage years. When she can no longer care for him, he packs a modest swag and a little money and heads into the bush. On the track, he meets up with two old swagmen who quickly become his new family. Tramping the bush tracks, they find many adventures. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful bush, they experience bushfires, floods, droughts, harsh winters, blistering summers, and the kindness and sometimes cruelty of the inhabitants. As he grows, Brennan begins to develop strange mystical powers that come to him in moments of great fear or passion. He is excited and scared at the same time, and he longs to understand his origins and find the source of these mystical powers in the hope that he can learn to master them. This story provides an insight into early Australian colonial history, the land, and its people, as seen through the eyes of a mystical young swagman.

Book excerpt: In the winter of 1948, a poorly educated jack-of-all-trades moved his ever- increasing family to a small vegetable crops' farm on the Darling Downs, in Queensland. They arrived in a horse and wagon to begin an extraordinary life of hardship and challenge in the bush. This book follows the harsh life of poverty that is eclipsed by the threads of dry humour, love and warmth that embraces a large closely-knit family. The living conditions endured are almost primitive, even for the nineteen fifties, as they fight to carve an existence from the land. His father's lingering fight with lung cancer compounds the pain of his own battle, as a National Service Soldier in the Vietnam War. The accounts of the war are graphic and poignant, and could only emerge from one who has experienced the frightening reality of combat. Highlighted through the suffering and dreams is a mother's undying devotion to her family, as she struggles to raise them, more or less on her own.

When the invasion begins Ian and his wife and daughter are camped at an isolated lagoon deep in the northern outback - prisoners in their own land watching the invaders swarm down the centre of the continent. They spilled from the chopper and crouched low to the ground. The machine lifted and was gone . . . What if he ended up in medieval England embroiled in a plot to set a new king on the throne? For once in his life Swagman John is lost for words. Accused of stealing the lamb he rescued fears being thrown in jail. But instead of protesting his innocence he backs into the waters of the billabong and falls. Certain he is dead, John cannot believe the lamb when he tells him he has been brought through a time and space portal to Medieval England. When Mistress Barabal and Squire Stanislaus stumble upon John in the New Forest he is taken back to Winchester Castle where he actually finds the King has been killed and his brother Prince Henry is about preparing to take his place and his new friends are assisting him. Suddenly talking lambs are the least of his worries. Caught up in political intrigues he does not fully understand, John finds dungeons and magic are not just for fairy tales, and that there are people prepared to go to great lengths to see William the Conquerer's other son crowned king—even as far as murder. Just as John wonders if going to prison for stealing sheep was not a better option all along, he finds there is an even more sinister foe meddling in with history. Against such odds how can John set history straight so he can return home to his family?

This is a plain bush yarn, relating in a humorous vein the experiences and adventures of a young man, who, finding himself stranded in Brisbane, where he knew no one, shouldered his swag and struck out into the bush to look for a job. His track from Breakfast Creek to beyond the Maranoa River, may be traced on the map, for he deals only with real places—and real people—and what he goes through is what the majority of swag men go through. Always an optimist, he sees the humor of the situations, and his narrative is embellished with details of bushcraft, and with the yarns and the fun of campfire and track.

Book excerpt: This book, which was inspired by a conference on plural conjugations of Frenchness (La France au pluriel) held in 2007 at the Universities of Technology, Sydney and Newcastle, focuses on the concept of national belonging as it pertains to detective fiction, with particular emphasis on French and Australian detective fictions and the encounter and crossing over between them. The objective is not only to use the concepts of 'French' and 'Australian' detective fiction productively, via the analysis of French and Australian detective-fiction novels, but also to challenge and undermine the very notion of national detective fictions, which are so often assumed to be transparently meaningful. The contributors to this volume focus variously on the following areas: comparative analysis of the genesis of French and Australian detective fiction; translation of Australian (and other) novels into French; translation as a genre; Frenchness as a stereotype, its role in individual novels and its spectre in all detective fiction; and readings of individual French and Australian detective novels. Overall, this book aims to challenge assumptions about French detective fiction, its influence on other national fictions and its explicit and implicit presence in all detective fiction.

Book excerpt: Emotional, as well as physical distress, is a heritage from our hominid ancestors; it has been experienced by every group of human beings since our emergence as a species. And every known culture has developed systems of conceptualization and intervention for addressing it. The editors have brought together leading psychologists, psychiatrists, anthropologists, and others to consider the interaction of psychosocial, biological, and cultural variables as they influence the assessment of health and illness and the course of therapy. The volume includes broadly conceived theoretical and survey chapters; detailed descriptions of specific healing traditions in Asia, the Americas, Africa, and the Arab world. The Handbook of Culture, Therapy, and Healing is a unique resource, containing information about Western therapies practiced in non-Western cultures, non-Western therapies practiced both in their own context and in the West.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive reassessment of British musical films 1946-1972 including King's Rhapsody, Beat Girl, The Tommy Steele Story, Rock You Sinners, The Golden Disc, and Oliver! Acting as a sequel to Adrian Wright's Cheer Up! British Musical Films, 1929-1945 (Boydell, 2020), Melody in the Dark offers the first major reassessment of the British musical film from the end of Second World War up to the beginning of the 1970s. In the immediate post-war world, British studios sought to reflect fast-changing social attitudes as they struggled to create inventive diversions in an effort to rival American competition. Hollywood stars Errol Flynn, Vera-Ellen, Jayne Mansfield and Judy Garland were among those brought in to provide Hollywood glamour. Embedded in the British consciousness, the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan were represented in three productions. Studios occasionally attempted adaptations of British stage musicals, among them King's Rhapsody and Expresso Bongo, and sexploitation movies turned musical via Secrets of a Windmill Girl and Beat Girl. It was left to minor studios to acknowledge the impact of rock'n'roll on social change in three early films, The Tommy Steele Story, Rock You Sinners and the iconic The Golden Disc. Through the sixties, British cinema seemed intent on flooding the market with entertainments promoting pop singers and rock groups such as Cliff Richard, Billy Fury and The Beatles. Towards the end of the period, it aspired to more grandiose projects such as Oliver! and Oh! What a Lovely War.

Book excerpt: Beyond the Last Day is the second action-packed installment in the When Seas Die Trilogy. Lowell Martin, his older brother Barret, Columbia University biologist Mack Fairley and several others, rescued from biological holocaust must now survive in a savage, barren world as they leave New York in a specialized NASA plane enroute to Point Barrow, Alaska. Along the way they chase rescue beacons, run low on fuel in snow-blown Canada, meet and fight grisly, attacking mutant defenders at an abandoned NORAD base; and finally get blown from the sky and crash in the southern Yukon. Here they finally meet more survivors of the bio/nuclear attack. The only problem is--can they make it out from this mile-high valley which imprisons them? Before their food and supplies run out? Was the discovery of these quirky survivors really worth losing their ship to try and save them? Deeper still, even if they do beat the odds and leave, where will they go? Intriguing questions indeed. Find the incredible answers.... The journey continues.

A Breath of Old Smoke, the sixth book in the Brothers Series and the second in the Shamrocks Saga, continues the story begun in Shamrocks in the Heather with the ongoing adventures of Martin Boland Quigley, youngest of the Quigley clan. The story begins as Martin arrives in London to begin his new job as a reporter on the London Post Express. Although disappointed in the size of the publication, Martin meets the love of his life. Anne Bentleigh-Woolcott is an aristocrat with definite democratic leanings and Martins attraction to her proves mutual. The book follows their life as they marry and become spies for a secret government organization. In Europe, the mysterious relic known as the Spear of Destiny suddenly looms large in not only their future but the future of the world. The couple encounters leaders of the nascent Nazi party along with their demonic assistants as they struggle to reach the Spear and learn why it should play such an important part in their own lives and that of the entire world. During their sojourn, they encounter many dangers and, with the help of their hard-working Guardian Angels, manage to overcome them. Once returned to England, the couple settle into married life. They buy their first home little knowing it, too, holds secrets important to them. In Castlemere, they learn of previously unknown relations in Australia and are reunited with this branch of the family. Soon, their son, Roarke, is born and Martin agrees to return to Germany to assess the growing power of the Nazi party. There, he is dismayed to see signs of the impending war becoming clearer by the day. He returns to his family depressed and frustrated at his inability to head off the upcoming disaster. Anne learns she is expecting twins and, to Martins horror, becomes a target of diabolical forces wishing to destroy the unborn babies. A resourceful Roarke--now four-years-old--shows his courage and inventiveness by diverting an attack and routing her assailant. At the end of the story Anne gives birth to twins--two girls who are destined to give Lucifer a run for his money--the irrepressible Theodora and Theodosia Quigley. This is not a religious book nor meant to endorse or promote any type of belief. It is intended to provide a verbal roller-coaster ride. Plus, Ive grown to quite like The Old Man. Enjoy!
