Book excerpt: The inspiring firsthand account of one woman’s journey into African shamanism and the mysteries of the most sacred animal on the continent: the legendary White Lion In 1991, Linda Tucker was rescued from a pride of lions in the Timbavati game region by a medicine woman known as the “Lion Queen.” So began Linda’s lifelong journey into the wisdom and ceremonies of Old Africa, in which humans and lions are able to cross the species barrier. Such knowledge is in accordance with the most guarded secrets of Ancient Egypt and humankind’s greatest riddle, the Sphinx. Scientists in our day have established that humankind’s most significant evolutionary leap occurred as a result of our ancestors’ interaction with great cats. The White Lion is a genetic rarity within Panthera leo, and occurred in just one region on Earth: Timbavati. Today, White Lions form the center of the notorious “canned” trophy-hunting industry—hand-reared captive lions, shot in enclosures for gross sums of money. By contrast, shamans believe that killing a “lion sun god” is the ultimate sacrilege. How the human species treats such precious symbols of God in nature may determine how nature treats the human species. Whether we view them as prophetic “Lions of God” or simply as rare genetic mutations, the story of the White Lions is a true legend unfolding in our own extraordinary times. Inspiring, captivating, and thoroughly researched, Mystery of the White Lions is an unforgettable portrait of these magnificent beasts and of the overwhelming love that has driven Linda's every action to save them. “Through understanding the White Lion we will understand ourselves and our great role in the chain of being.” —Deepak Chopra

Book excerpt: That an unknown manuscript by C. S. Lewis should suddenly appear two decades after his death is remarkable. That it turns out to be a version of a previously published Lewis short story which some have accused of being a forgery, makes it a mystery. C. S. Lewis's "Light" manuscript appeared out of nowhere in 1985 after a different version of the story was published in 1977. Could "Light" be the final version of that story, the missing polished text which should have been published all along? And does it disprove or inflame the accusations of forgery? Charlie W. Starr explores the questions and reveals the truth that what Lewis scholars have previously believed about the story's origins is largely inaccurate, and that the insights into Lewis's thinking which "Light" reveals provide a new key to understanding some of Lewis's most profound ideas. "As literary journalism, both investigative and critical, it is top shelf." James Como, author of Remembering C. S. Lewis "Starr's book explores a vitally important theme in Lewis's work - light." Will Vaus, author of Speaking of Jack: A C. S. Lewis Discussion Guide "Starr has done us all a great service ... I can't recommend this book highly enough." Adam Barkman, author of C. S. Lewis and Philosophy as a Way of Life "Starr shines a new and illuminating light on one of Lewis's most intriguing stories." Michael Ward, author of Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C. S. Lewis Charlie W. Starr is professor of English and Humanities at Kentucky Christian University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the depths of German and American archives comes a story one soldier never wanted told. The first volunteer killed defending Robert E. Lee's position in battle was really a German assassin. After fleeing to the United States to escape prosecution for murder, the assassin enlisted in a German company of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Mexican-American War and died defending Lee's battery at the Siege of Veracruz in 1847. Lee wrote a letter home, praising this unnamed fallen volunteer defender. Military records identify him, but none of the Americans knew about his past life of crime. Before fighting with the Americans, Lee's defender had assassinated Johann Heinrich Rieber, mayor of Bönnigheim, Germany, in 1835. Rieber's assassination became 19th-century Germany's coldest case ever solved by a non-law enforcement professional and the only 19th-century German murder ever solved in the United States. Thirty-seven years later, another suspect in the assassination who had also fled to America found evidence in Washington, D.C., that would clear his own name, and he forwarded it to Germany. The German prosecutor Ernst von Hochstetter corroborated the story and closed the case file in 1872, naming Lee's defender as Rieber's murderer. Relying primarily on German sources, Death of an Assassin tracks the never-before-told story of this German company of Pennsylvania volunteers. It follows both Lee's and the assassin's lives until their dramatic encounter in Veracruz and picks up again with the surprising case resolution decades later. This case also reveals that forensic ballistics--firearm identification through comparison of the striations on a projectile with the rifling in the barrel--is much older than previously thought. History credits Alexandre Laccasagne for inventing forensic ballistics in 1888. But more than 50 years earlier, Eduard Hammer, the magistrate who investigated the Rieber assassination in 1835, used the same technique to eliminate a forester's rifle as the murder weapon. A firearms technician with state police of Baden-Württemberg tested Hammer's technique in 2015 and confirmed its efficacy, cementing the argument that Hammer, not Laccasagne, should be considered the father of forensic ballistics. The roles the volunteer soldier/assassin and Robert E. Lee played at the Siege of Veracruz are part of American history, and the record-breaking, 19th-century cold case is part of German history. For the first time, Death of an Assassin brings the two stories together.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Winged Lion, or Stories of Venice After spending a few weeks in Florence, Uncle Moses and his young friends began to discuss the important question of their next movements; and here a difficulty arose which led to many odd adventures. As for Uncle Moses, that worthy man would gladly have left Italy altogether, and gone on as fast as possible to his destination; but the very hint of such a thing roused so great a storm of opposition and reproach that he did not press it further. Leave Italy, indeed! That was not to be thought of. They had many places still to visit, and many adventures still to encounter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADVENTURES IN AN OTHER-WORLDLY NEW-AGE VENICE it is the year 1537. The great winged Lion stares over a Venice where magic thrives. The rich Venetian Republic is a bastion of independence and tolerance. Perhaps for that reason, it is also corrupt, and rotten with intrigue. But for the young brothers Marco and Benito Valdosta, vagabond and thief, Venice is simply-home. They have no idea that they stand at the center of the city's coming struggle for its very life. They know nothing of the powerful forces moving in the background. They have barely heard of Chernobog, demonlord of the North, who is shifting his pawns to attack Venice in order to cut into the underbelly of the Holy Roman Empire. All Marco and Benito know is that they're hungry and in dangerous company: Katerina the smuggler, Caesare the sell-sword, Montagnard assassins, church inquisitors, militant Knights of the Holy Trinity, Dottore Marina the Strega mage . . . and Maria. Maria might be an honest canaler, but she had the hottest temper a boy could find. Yet among the dark waters of the canals lurk far worse dangers than a hot-tempered girl. Chernobog has set a monster loose to wreak havoc on the city. Magic, murder and evil are all at work to pull Venice down. Fanatical monks seek to root out true witchcraft with fire and sword. Steel-clad Teutonic knights, wealth traders, church dignitaries and great Princes fight and plot for control of the jewel of the Mediterranean. And somehow all of these, from thieves to mages to princes, must gather around Marco and his brother Benito, under the shadow of the great winged lion of Venice.
