Book Synopsis Surveys in Noncommutative Geometry by : Nigel Higson
Download or read book Surveys in Noncommutative Geometry written by Nigel Higson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute organized an Instructional Symposium on Noncommutative Geometry in conjunction with the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference. These events were held at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts from June 18 to 29, 2000. The Instructional Symposium consisted of several series of expository lectures which were intended to introduce key topics in noncommutative geometry to mathematicians unfamiliar with the subject. Those expository lectures have been edited and are reproduced in this volume. The lectures of Rosenberg and Weinberger discuss various applications of noncommutative geometry to problems in ``ordinary'' geometry and topology. The lectures of Lagarias and Tretkoff discuss the Riemann hypothesis and the possible application of the methods of noncommutative geometry in number theory. Higson gives an account of the ``residue index theorem'' of Connes and Moscovici. Noncommutative geometry is to an unusual extent the creation of a single mathematician, Alain Connes. The present volume gives an extended introduction to several aspects of Connes' work in this fascinating area. Information for our distributors: Titles in this series are copublished with the Clay Mathematics Institute (Cambridge, MA).

Book Synopsis The Mysteries of London (Vol. 1-4) by : George W. M. Reynolds
Download or read book The Mysteries of London (Vol. 1-4) written by George W. M. Reynolds and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 3100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysteries of London in 4 volumes is a "penny blood" classic. There are many plots in the story, but the overarching purpose is to reveal different facets of life in London, from its seedy underbelly to its over-indulgent and corrupt aristocrats. The Mysteries of London are considered to be among the seminal works of the Victorian "urban mysteries" genre, a style of sensational fiction which adapted elements of Gothic novels – with their haunted castles, innocent noble damsels in distress and nefarious villains – to produce stories which instead emphasized the poverty, crime, and violence of a great metropolis, complete with detailed and often sympathetic descriptions of the lives of lower-class lawbreakers and extensive glossaries of thieves' cant, all interwoven with a frank sexuality not usually found in popular fiction of the time.

Book Synopsis Reading the Cozy Mystery by : Phyllis M. Betz
Download or read book Reading the Cozy Mystery written by Phyllis M. Betz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their intimate settings, subdued action and likeable characters, cozy mysteries are rarely seen as anything more than light entertainment. The cozy, a subgenre of crime fiction, has been historically misunderstood and often overlooked as the subject of serious study. This anthology brings together a groundbreaking collection of essays that examine the cozy mystery from a range of critical viewpoints. The authors engage with the standard classification of a cozy, the characters who appear in its pages, the environment where the crime occurs and how these elements reveal the cozy story's complexity in surprising ways. Essays analyze cozy mysteries to argue that Agatha Christie is actually not a cozy writer; that Columbo fits the mold of the cozy detective; and that the stories' portrayals of settings like the quaint English village reveal a more complicated society than meets the eye.
