Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Municipal Parks, Gardens, and Open Spaces of London: Their History and Associations HE meaning of the title and scope of this book I calls for some explanation, especially When it Will be found that no mention is made of such places as Hyde Park, Regent's Park, or St. James's Park, Which have a right to be considered the most important parks in London. In the first place, the history of these parks has been more than once written, and in the second place it must be pointed out that they are national rather than municipal 'lungs, ' because they are kept up at the expensie of the nation at large, and not by any one municipality. London's/municipal parks and open spaces are those which are maintained by the London County Council at the. Expense of the Metropolitan ratepayers. In addition to the national and municipal places of recreation, there are a number of disused burial-grounds and other small grounds maintained by the various local vestries, Whilst the number is completed by those under the care of Conservators, private bodies and individuals, the most important of Which are Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath, together making a magnificent open space, acres in extent. The Corporation of the City of London also possesses some acres of parks and open spaces which are available for the use of Londoners, but are maintained out of city cash' and the funds derivable from metage on grain. The largest of these is Epping Forest; but, like the majority of the City parks, this is outside the County of London. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance and Public Space in the Australian City is a rich and evocative examination of the production and use of public spaces in Australian cities in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Using Brisbane as a case study, it demonstrates the way public spaces were constructed, contested, and controlled in attempts to create ‘ideal’ city spaces. This construction of space is considered not just in the literal and material sense but also as a product of aspirational and imaginative processes of city-building by municipal authorities and citizens. This book is as much about people as it is about cities – uncovering the manner in which perceived models of ideal urban citizenship were reflected in the production and ordering of city spaces. This book challenges common narratives that situate public spaces as universal or equalising aspects of the urban sphere. Exploring three distinct types of public space – the streets, slums, and parks – the book questions how urban spaces functioned, alongside how they were intended to function. In so doing, Governance and Public Space in the Australian City situates public spaces as products of manipulation and regulation at odds with broader concepts of individual liberty and the ‘rights’ of people to public space. It will be illuminating reading for scholars and students of urban history and Australian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adelaide is well known for its encircling park lands and beautiful gardens. They have been the site of many prestigious events and at times the source of much contention. In Anticipating Municipal Parks, Don Johnson contests the accepted understanding that Colonel William Light was the sole architect of the city of Adelaide, revealing the often-ignored role of Light's Deputy Surveyor, George Strickland Kingston. Johnson also investigates the role and influence of John Arthur Roebuck and John Claudius Loudon on the course of town-planning theory, and the political and theoretical influences leading to the economic and social ideas of Ebenezer Howard and his Garden City. This is a fascinating look at how Adelaide helped define city planning ideas in the nineteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1833, the Select Committee for Public Walks was introduced so that ‘the provision of parks would lead to a better use of Sundays and the replacement of the debasing pleasures.’ Music was seen as an important moral influence and ‘musical cultivation ... the safest and surest method of popular culture’, and it was the eventual introduction of the bandstand which became a significant aspect of the reforming potential of public parks. However, the move from the bull baiting of ‘Merrie England’ to the ordered recreation provided by bandstands has never been fully comprehended. Likewise, the extent of changes in leisure and public entertainment and the impact of music at seaside resorts often revolved around the use of seaside bandstands, with the subsequent growth of coastal resorts. Music in public spaces, and the history and heritage of the bandstand has largely been ignored. Yet in their heyday, there were over 1,500 bandstands in the country, in public parks, on piers and seaside promenades attracting the likes of crowds of over 10,000 in the Arboretum in Lincoln, to regular weekday and weekend concerts in most of London’s parks up until the beginning of the Second World War. Little is really known about them, from their evolution as ‘orchestras’ in the early Pleasure Gardens, the music played within them, to their intricate and ornate ironwork or art deco designs and the impact of the great foundries, their worldwide influence, to the great decline post Second World War and subsequent revival in the late 1990s. This book tells the story of these pavilions made for music, and their history, decline and revival.
