He grows up a thief and a mugger. He is not chivalrous nor kind, and has only meager ethics, never giving evidence against a friend or leaving someone behind. He chooses a life of robbery and violence, disrespecting those who work for a living. He has a deep hatred for wealthy society. When falsely accused of murder, Billy flees to San Francisco and is shanghaied aboard a ship. The ship's secret mission is to hijack a millionaire's daughter, Barbara Harding, for ransom. After a terrible storm, the ship is damaged and Billy rescues Barbara. He protects her from the jungle for weeks and they fall in love. In The Return of a Mucker Billy goes back to his old Chicago haunts intending to clear his name. His time with Barbara imbued him with faith in the law and justice. However, he soon realizes that the system is more interested in finding someone guilty than in finding the guilty party. Awaiting the verdict, he reads that Barbara and Mallory are about to marry. The Oakdale Affair features the Return of The Mucker sidekick, Bridge. In the home of Jonas Prim, president of an Oakdale bank, a thief makes off with a servant's clothing and valuables belonging to Prim's daughter Abigail. Escaping, the thief later encounters a group of hobos and is taken for one of them, the Oskaloosa Kid. Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.

The work starts as a social critique of the inner city, Chicago, but quickly moves to sea. A lost city of Japanese samurai can be found on a tiny Pacific island, and this serves as the action-filled turf of Billy Byrne, a Chicago street thug. It was written in 1917 under the working title of "Bridge and the Oskaloosa Kid", and is a partial sequel to The Mucker (1914/1916). It was adapted into a silent film in 1919 starring Evelyn Greeley. Plot summary In the home of Jonas Prim, president of an Oakdale bank, a thief makes off with a servant's clothing and valuables belonging to Prim's daughter Abigail. Abigail is thought to be absent visiting Sam Benham, whom her parents want her to marry. Escaping, the thief later encounters a group of hobos and is taken for one of them, the Oskaloosa Kid. Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees. Meanwhile, the Prims discover the theft and learn that Abigail never arrived at Benham's. The incidents are assumed to be connected to other crimes, the assault and robbery of John Baggs and the murder of Reginald Paynter, who had been seen with two men and a girl. The local paper speculates Abigail might have been involved with Paynter's murder. Mr. Prim hires a private eye. The thief encounters another vagrant, Bridge, and the two take refuge from a storm in the deserted Squibb house, site of an old murder. Nearby, a shot is heard from a passing car, from which a woman is thrown. The two take the unconscious woman into the house. There they discover a dead body and hear something in the cellar dragging a chain. They lock themselves in one of the rooms. The woman, reviving, reveals herself as the girl with Paynter. The other men in the car were Terry, the driver, and the Oskaloosa Kid. She says the Kid murdered Paynter and afterwards threw her from the car and shot at her when she wouldn't keep quiet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generations have been and gone since Colonel Jeremy McCloud disappeared without trace on the first space mission launched by the United States of America in August 1945. Those involved in the launch are also gone—or have they? Present day, twenty-first century The first indication there might be contact with the 1945 space vessel The Javelin was unknowingly initiated by an archivist, Sophia Aburae, who heard a distinct signal originating somewhere in the archivist’s expansive workrooms in Washington, DC. On receiving notification of a mysterious signal, US military specialists became involved in detecting its whereabouts and extricating the relay assembly. Unknown operatives were assigned the task of seeking out and destroying those involved in the delicate and secretive operation. Unknown alien visitors—eight identically dressed beings—were assigned the task of stopping any interference by the United States Military’s specialist operation forces. A stranger, Mr. Krawn, apparently of human origin, addressed the United Nations Security Council with a request to allow asylum and safe haven for the inhabitants of an unknown planet, Ichtholia, situated in the Maritimus Galaxy, ten light-years from Earth. A number of alien space vessels from Ichtholia descended onto the plains of the Great Western Desert in Western Australia. Primitive tribesmen of the Pintupi Nation observed the arrival of the strangers, reporting their discovery to a remote police station at Kiwirrkurra. A desert patrol was sent to the location and—along with numerous tribesmen—observed the behavior of the alien visitors to prevent any aggressive actions toward Earth beings. Corruption existed across many nations. Collaboration with the aliens by traitorous Xranons exacerbated the need for friendly alien forces to curb any attempts to overthrow the governments of all nations and control Earth—the blue planet!
