Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1904, the date was December 6th, the place, Chicago, Illinois. At this time in history, the first recorded motor cycle package delivery driver in the city of Chicago, left his place of employment in freezing weather conditions, protected only by his coat and hat and drove off into history. Riding a motor cycle equipped with a delivery sidecar, he would travel 29 miles over roads made rough by the hoofs of countless horses, and ride 29 miles that day alone, making three trips, and delivering 132 packages to customers over the next nearly four and one half hours. Through the pages of this book I looked into history of the men behind this event; William R. Manierre, founder of the Fowler-Manson-Sherman Cycle Mfg. Co., THE MACHINE, Charles A. Stevens, founder of the Chas. A. Stevens & Bros., THE MERCHANT, and Peter M. Hansen, my grandfather, THE MAN. With no more to go on than a small four page advertising booklet published by the Fowler-Manson-Sherman Motor Cycle Mfg. Co., advertising the advantages of their newly developed sidecar, and handed down through the family from grandfather (THE MAN), to son and to grandson, I have strived to fill in the numerous blanks of history surrounding this event by giving credit to the three men involved.

Book excerpt: It’s every motorcyclist’s dream. A friend or acquaintance says, “You know, there’s an old bike that’s been sitting in this garage for years.” The hunt is on. And rather than the usual worthless Hondazukimaha pile of hopeless oxidation, at the back of that barn you find a genuine classic, the motorcycle collector’s dream. The Vincent in the Barn tells forty such stories--tales of motorcycle hunting dreams come true. From Ducatis in basements to Vincents abandoned in sheds, Harleys in barns to Brit bikes moldering behind urban garages, these are the stories that fuel every motorcyclist’s fantasies. The only difference? They’re true. Book excerpt: Caspar Damion Splane, pitchman extraordinaire, had a voice so compelling that no one could pass within earshot without looking to see what kind of man was talking. He could sell anything. At a time when nylon stockings were impossible to find and very expensive, Caspar popped open his sample case, hawked silk rejects as the real McCoy, and sold them all in one afternoon. His power over people became an obsession, a tool for control and power, a compensation for years of loneliness and suffering. At the Kinderwall Sunshine Mission, revivalist Ma Kinderwall saves souls and feeds the poor from her soup kitchen. Followers flock to hear her. She has a gift, they say. During a down and out period of Caspar Splane's life, he and the Sunshine Mission collide, and in no time at all, he discovers a new audience for his madness. He adds "reverend" to his name and turns Ma's audience inside out. In the guise of selling peace, he grows rich on selling hate. Published in 1953, The Hate Merchant, is a timeless and unforgettable account of the power of manipulation and the tragedies that result when rhetoric, slanted facts, suggestions of secrecy, and imagined threats are unleashed into the world unchallenged and unchecked.

Book excerpt: In this autobiographical book, the author gives an informative and lively account of the first eight years of his and his family's living and serving in pre-revolutionary feudal Ethiopia. It is a story of adventure as a novice missionary couple learns and adapts to a vastly different culture while raising a family in the less developed hinterlands. The events take place from 1967 to 1975, a pivotal time in Ethiopia’s history; a time marked by growing discontent with feudalism and the ancient imperial regime that supported it. It was a time of growing turmoil that, in the midst of drought and famine, spilled over into an armed revolution; a time when ignorant men with guns over-powered the best minds and forced a tradition-bound society to join in a bloody experiment with radical socialism. It was a time when the slow and difficult years of missionary effort in planting the seeds of the Christian gospel began to sprout and take root and grow into what would become a mighty movement of transformation in that society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a neoliberal era, when the ideology of the free market governs community development as much as international trade, a conflict between capital and tradition is inevitable. Issues such as the value ascribed to honour and social prestige are difficult to negotiate with economic opportunity. Using the example of a 'traditional' Nepalese market town, Katharine Neilson Rankin explores how economic liberalization has blended with local cultures of value. Utilizing the ethnographic method of anthropology and the comparative and normative thrust of geography, Rankin undertakes a critique of neoliberal approaches to development. She demonstrates how market-led development does not expand opportunity, but rather deepens existing injustice and inequality, which is further exacerbated by planners – eager to implement market-led approaches – relying on naively idealistic notions of 'social capital' to expand poor people's access to the market. The Cultural Politics of Markets makes a clear case for a strategic merger between anthropological and planning perspectives in thinking about the issue of market transformation.
