Book excerpt: Written by a contemporary pioneer in the area of the universal paradigm and Islamic world-systems, this book offers a fresh post-modernist outlook on new epistemological investigations in the universal paradigm. It addresses the problems of the unity of knowledge in learning systems, thereby invoking the foundations of Islamic epistemology. The author presents a phenomenological model of unity of knowledge in economics, ethics, science and society. Some critical areas where this model can be applied are also explored. As a foundational study on Islamic theory of knowledge covering the fields of Islamic economics, finance, science and society, the book will be valuable to researchers, practitioners and global academic institutions.

Students are forced to learn too many theorems and proofs. In "Free Calculus", the author suggests a direct approach to the two fundamental concepts of calculus - differentiation and integration - using two inequalities. Regular calculus is condensed into a single concise chapter. This makes the teaching of physics in step with the calculus teaching.

Book excerpt: With something of a poetry renaissance currently under way worldwide, there is now, more than ever, a need for a solidly-based methodology for interpreting poems: something more empirical than traditional ‘lit-crit’ approaches, and something more linguistically-informed than the version of ‘postmodernism’ rampant in certain Anglophone universities. The latter approach, which tends to allow the individual reader to do what he/she likes with a poetic text, is inadequate to interpret modernist poetry, whose English-language precursors may be found in the late Romantics; its pioneers were already writing (in France) as early as 1840. What is so different about the modernists? Most importantly, their works are monumental, in that they are strongly resistant to deconstruction. Contributing to this resistance is the fact that they are built around two deep-level propositions, each of which generates a set of indirectly-signifying images, sharing the same internal structure, but having a different vocabulary. Thus, they do not signify according to linear narrative, but according to these propositions—and the relation between them—which may be reconstructed by a careful comparison of images on the textual surface. Every text—as subject-sign—refers to an intertextual object-sign, which is usually another poem, but may also be a film or other form of art. Mediating between these two signs is their reader-constructed interpretant, which completes the semiotic triad. As this book shows, the novelty of this sign is thrown into relief by the contrast it makes with a lexical counterpart from the reader’s experience, which differs from the interpretant in structure. The book’s inclusion of French and Japanese, as well as English poems, shows that deep-level signifying mechanisms may well be universal, with considerable research and pedagogical implications.

Book excerpt: This important book discusses the political economy of world order and the basic ideological and ontological grounds upon which the emergent global order is based. Starting from a Maori perspective it examines the development of international law and the world order of nation states. In engaging with these issues across macro and micro levels, the international arena, the national state and forms of regionalism are identified as sites for the reshaping of the global politico/economic order and the emergence of Empire. Overarching these problematics is the emergence of a new form of global domination in which the connecting roles of militarism and the economy, and the increase in technologies of surveillance and control have acquired overt significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging book presents the linguistic achievements of four major cultures to readers presumably conversant with modern theoretical linguistics. The chapter on India discusses in detail Pāṇini's (c. 400 B.C.) grammar Ast-adhy-ay-i as well as the work of his commentators Kātyāyana, Patanjali, and Bhartṛhari. In the Chinese tradition, the Confucian doctrine of the Rectification of Names' is singled out for treatment. Arabic linguistics is represented by Sibawaihi's (d. 793) grammar al-Kitāb, in particular its syntax, as well as the subsequent commentary tradition. The chapter on Europe, which is the most comprehensive of the four, covers the time span from antiquity to the 20th century; special attention is devoted to the contributions of Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Varro, Apollonius Dyscolus, and the Modistae. The achievements of the cultures in linguistics are treated throughout from a deliberately value-laden point of view. The achievements of Western antiquity and the Middle Ages are shown to be much more than the average linguist is inclined to believe. Even more importantly, it is shown that the Indian and the Arab traditions have been superior to the European tradition at least until the 20th century. The fact that a linguistic theory created some 2,400 years ago is fully as adequate as our best theories today must have far-reaching implications for the notion of 'scientific progress'. More precisely, it proves necessary to distinguish between 'progress in the human sciences' and 'progress in the natural sciences'. These issues, which pertain to the general philosophy of science, are treated in the final chapter of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of the last decades, the state experienced a revival on the scene of international development as there has been a growing acknowledgment amongst the international development community that the state plays a key role in enabling development in a specific society. Therefore, the role of the state and especially the concept of state-building have occupied a central place in the development discourse. In that respect, a growing interest has manifested itself in the discussion and analysis around so-called "fragile states". The author discussed the development discourse around that state-building paradigm in general and focuses through its field research in Colombia specifically on the question of the state legitimacy in so-called fragile contexts.

Book excerpt: It is not uncommon for the Principle of Complementarity to be invoked in either Science or Philosophy, viz. the ancient oriental philosophy of Yin and Yang whose symbolic representation is portrayed on the cover of the book. Or Niels Bohr's use of it as the basis for the so-called Copenhagen interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. This book arose as an outgrowth of the author's previous book entitled 'Knots, Braids and Moebius Strips,' published by World Scientific in 2015, wherein the Principle itself was discovered to be expressible as a simple 2x2 matrix that summarizes the algebraic essence of both the well-known Microbiology of DNA and the author's version of the elementary particles of physics. At that point, the possibility of an even wider utilization of that expression of Complementarity arose. The current book, features Complementarity, in which the matrix algebra is extended to characterize not only DNA itself but the well-known process of its replication, a most gratifying outcome. The book then goes on to explore Complementarity, with and without its matrix expression, as it occurs, not only in much of physics but in its extension to cosmology as well.
