THE CASTLE OF ALEPPO.--ITALIAN ENGINEER. EM1N-EL-FETWA.--MOSQUE-EL-ADELIEH.--PUBLIC LIBRARY. EDUCATION.--THE MUFTI. THE CADT. I Began my visits to the public edifices and institutions, accompanied by an excellent cicerone. The first object to which I turned my attention was the castle, which occupies the centre of the city, being built on a high oval hill, the sides of which are smoothed, rounded, and partly flagged, but in so monotonous a manner that, seen from some points, the castle of Aleppo is as unpicturesque as any that can be imagined: here is no profile of rugged rock, as at the castle of Edinburgh, which, in many other respects, is not unlike that of Aleppo. But what keep or donjon relique of the middle ages of Europe can equal the entrance to the castle of Aleppo? An enormous square tower, beautifully inlaid with a darkcoloured stone, d. Varabesque, rises in stern dignity over the moat, on entering which one sees the symmetrical contortions of two snakes adorning the gateway. But all the Saracenic grandeur leads to nothing. The interior of the castle presents the spectacle of a town in ruins: only two houses were habitable, one occupied by an Aga of the Janissary party and another by the commandant. The ordnance consisted of three old-fashioned twelve-pounders without carriages, and the garrison did not exceed a dozen men. The commandant was very polite, and produced his pipes and coffee, but there was a great deal of whispering between him and an Italian nondescript, who was presented to me as an officer of the corps of military engineers; who, if I might judge from the state of his uniform, had seen a great deal of most arduous service. On wishing the commandant a good morning this Archimedes took me to look at...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Druzes are one of the smallest, least studied, and most esoteric religious communities in the Middle East because of the teachings' inaccessibility to both outsiders and uninitiated members within the Druze community. Furthermore, proselytizing has been prohibited since the establishment of the sect in the 11th century. In order to resist assimilation by the various empires and colonial powers that sought to dominate them (the Byzantines, Arab dynasties, the Mamluks and Ottomans, the British and French, in addition to the nations that govern them), the Druzes disguise and conceal their beliefs . Historical Dictionary of the Druzes contains nearly 1,000 concise and informative entries on religious, political, and cultural themes, as well as major families and individuals (artists, writers, diplomats, and leaders) who have contributed to Druze communities. Also provided are a chronology, introductory essay, bibliography, and several maps, plates, and genealogical tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Druzes are one of the smallest, least studied, and most esoteric religious communities in the Middle East. This is because the Druze teachings remain inaccessible not only to outsiders but also to uninitiated members within the Druze community itself. Furthermore, proselytizing_inducing someone to convert to one's own religious faith_has been prohibited since the establishment of the sect in the 11th century. In order to resist assimilation by the various empires and colonial powers that sought to dominate them_the Byzantines, various Arab dynasties, the Mamluks and Ottomans, the British and French, in addition to the nations that govern them_the Druzes disguise and conceal their beliefs. Therefore, not much is known by outsiders about the Druzes. This dictionary provides nearly 1,000 concise and informative cross-referenced A to Z entries on religious, political, and cultural themes, as well as entries on a number of major families and individuals (artists, writers, diplomats, and leaders) who have contributed to the Druze communities. This volume is also complemented with a chronology, an introductory essay, and a bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing minority groups in the Middle East is now a thousand years old. It emerged in the city of Cairo, spread to what is today Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, and subsequently became known by outsiders as Druze (in Arabic, Durooz, meaning Druzes). Druzes have played a major role in the history of the Middle East and often been misunderstood by neighbors and outsiders because of their esoteric religious doctrine, the secretive nature that such a doctrine has instilled in them, and the variety of perspectives or divisions prevalent among members of the community. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Druzes covers their history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Druzes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the current debate about cities in the Middle East from Sana’a, Beirut and Jerusalem to Cairo, Marrakesh and Gaza, the book explores urban planning and policy, migration, gender and identity as well as politics and economics of urban settings in the region. This handbook moves beyond essentialist and reductive analyses of identity, urban politics, planning, and development in cities in the Middle East, and instead offers critical engagement with both historical and contemporary urban processes in the region. Approaching "Cities" as multi-dimensional sites, products of political processes, knowledge production and exchange, and local and global visions as well as spatial artefacts. Importantly, in the different case studies and theoretical approaches, there is no attempt to idealise urban politics, planning, and everyday life in the Middle East –– which (as with many other cities elsewhere) are also situations of contestation and violence –– but rather to highlight how cities in the region, and especially those which are understudied, revolve around issues of housing, infrastructure, participation and identity, amongst other concerns. Analysing a variety of cities in the Middle East, the book is a significant contribution to Middle East Studies. It is an essential resource for students and academics interested in Geography, Regional and Urban Studies of the Middle East.
