Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Language Review, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Study of Medieval and Modern Literature and Philology All students of stage history are aware of the valuable information bearing upon the composition and careers of the various Elizabethan companies of actors, which is afforded by the records in official documents of the performances given by them at Court. These records are of two kinds. There are the Accounts of the Revels Office, which was charged with the oversight of all dramatic festivities within the royal household, and incurred expenditure in connection with the choice, rehearsal, staging, dresses, and properties of the plays performed by the accredited 'Servants' of the Queen herself or of the great nobles, at Christmas, Candlemas, or Shrovetide, in the palaces of Whitehall, Windsor, Richmond, Hampton Court, Greenwich, or Nonsuch. A series, not quite complete, of full Revels Accounts from 1571 to 1588 was printed by Peter Cunningham in his Extracts from the Accounts of the Revels at Court (1842). These generally contain indications of the names of the companies engaged and the times at which they performed; and to them are in some cases attached full schedules of such information, together with the names of the plays. The other records bearing on the subject are those of the 'rewards' paid out of royal funds to the representatives of the companies in recompense of their services. These were not a concern of the Revels Office. The practice: was for a warrant directing the payment to be signed by no less a body than the Privy Council, and it is a curious reminder of the personal relation in which the Council stood to the Sovereign, to find notices of the issue of such warrants sandwiched in the minutes of its proceedings between accounts of important investigations into heresy and treason. The warrant was taken by the players to the Treasurer of the Chamber to whom it was addressed, honoured by him, and debited against funds assigned to him for this and other expenses. Of these payments, therefore, we have two independent records, one in the Council Register, and another in the Accounts of the Treasurer of the Chamber. As neither Richard Poore or Simon of Ghent was a follower of St Augustine's Rule or even a religious, neither of them could have written, as the author of the A. R. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Language Review, Vol. 13: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Study of Medieval and Modern Literature and Philology The following notes attempt to throw light on some vexed passages in Chapman's plays. 'Where the thread of his meaning, ' says Professor Boas, 'seems to disappear amidst his fertile imagery - one feels not that sense is lacking, but that one has failed to find the clue to the zigzag movements of Chapman's brain.' This clue often lies in his learned allusiveness. His mind was saturated with Stoic doctrine, and the language of his characters is drawn freely from that tradition. But his references are often indirect because he was so much at home in that older world. He may merely imply distinctions familiar to him though obscure to his audience, or, with an inborn love of paradox, he allows his characters to distort the original argument for their immediate purpose, or sometimes he mistakes or mistranslates his source. Although I give sources when I happen to meet them, that is not the primary purpose of this paper. Many of his references seem to be to the general doctrine rather than to particular passages. I think that it can be shown, in some cases at least, that he had no book open before him, but linked images and allusions together through some association aroused by the immediate situation. This sensitiveness to images has called forth the harshest criticism. Chapman is accused of heaping up metaphors to no definite purpose. Now such passages are generally at salient points in the dramas, like Bussy's first speech or his last, and it would be a serious indictment of Chapman's literary skill if they had no internal coherence or appropriateness. As I hope to show, he is obscure at these times for two reasons. When he approaches a climax, his speech becomes concentrated, and thus doubly difficult for those who do not move in his atmosphere; also he uses metaphors to establish successive points in the argument. Though the images may be disparate, yet they are held together by an underlying thought which is developed by means of them, and the whole passage is thus fused into a unity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Language Review, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Study of Medieval and Modern Literature and Philology I Propose, in the following article, to show that the Scottish Sonneteers of the beginning of the seventeenth century, more particularly William Drummond of Hawthornden, were largely indebted to the French poets of the second half of the sixteenth century. In his excellent edition of the Poems of Drummond (1894) W. C. Ward has proved that the Scottish poet had levied heavy loans on the Italian poets - more particularly Marino. His 'Notes' contain more than fifty poems or fragments of poems by Petrarch, Tasso, Guarini and Marino, which Drummond borrowed more or less directly. Long before Ward proved his case, it had been generally admitted that Drummond owed a good deal to the Italian poets, though very few instances had actually been quoted. No one, I believe, has so far traced the influence of French poetry on Drummond, and yet the result of the present investigation, I venture to think, demonstrates clearly that it was almost as considerable as that exercised by the Italian poets, with this difference that it was exclusively confined, apparently, to one poet, namely Phillippe Desportes, the author of Diane and other sonnet-collections, and himself an inveterate plagiarist from the Italians and from the Spanish poet Montemayor. It is well known, now, what a large number of sonnets contained in the Elizabethan sonnet-cycles were filched from the author of Diane. The infatuation of contemporary English poets - to whom must now be added Drummond - for the conceits and hyperboles of this purely court poet is really remarkable, and not a little difficult to explain. One would naturally expect them to go to Ronsard and Du Bellay for their models rather than to the Abbe de Tiron. It is true that the chief of the Pleiade and his lieutenant were not neglected, but they never enjoyed a tithe of Desportes' popularity. The fact remains, and is not a very flattering testimony to the taste of the poets concerned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
