Book excerpt: This book discusses the construction and operating principle of a turboprop engine; the various structural diagrams for TVD (turbo-prop engines) are described in understandable form, as are the operating conditions for the individual units of such an engine. The material pertaining to the physical processes taking place within the engine is presented in systematic order. Particular attention has been devoted to the operational characteristics and problems of TVD control. The book is intended for flight and engineertechnical personnel of the Soviet Air Forces and the Civil Air Fleet. The book may also be useful for students in aviation flight and engineering educational institutions as well as for the technical personnel using gas-turbine powerplants in the field of transportation and under stationary conditions. The material contained in this book is based on data gathered from foreign aviation-engine construction practice. Problems of the future are described from the standpoint of foreign opinions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbojet aircraft fly at a speed exceeding 2000 km/hr and have a higher rate of fuel consumption. Mig-15 and Tu-104 aircraft powered by turbojet engines have a fuel consumption rate of 0.8-1.0 kg per 1-kg thrust per hr. Turboprop engines were developed for the purpose of fuel economy. Turboprop engines have similar construction and operate on the same principle as a turbojet engine. The only difference in a turboprop engine is the addition of a propeller outside the compressor. Turboprop engines are built for long-range civil transport airplanes flying at a speed of 800-900 km/hr. Turboprop engines can also be used in military aircraft having a flying speed of 4-4.5 mach if an afterburner is added. Tests showed that the fuel consumption of turboprop engines is reduced 16-20% under the same internal flow condition. Takeoff thrust is also increased 30-40% and engine noise is reduced 10-15 db. Turboprop engines, however, are more complicated in construction, heavier, and larger in diameter (30-40%) than turbojet engines. More than 40 types of turboprop engines have been developed recently. A small turboprop engine capable of producing a thrust of only 300 kg is in process of development. A large turboprop engine having a thrust of 9000-10000 kg and a fuel consumption rate of 0.51-0.54 kg per 1-kg thrust per hr has been developed. Middle-range Tu-124 passenger airplanes powered by turboprop engines have a fuel consumption rate 15-25% lower than Tu-104 airplanes. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the rotordynamic considerations that are important to the successful design or troubleshooting of a turbomachine. Shows how bearing design, fluid seals, and rotor geometry affect rotordynamic behavior (vibration, shaft whirling, bearing loads, and critical speeds), and describes two successful computational methods for rotordynamic analysis in terms that can be understood by practicing engineers. Gives descriptive accounts of the state of the art in several areas of the field and presents important mathematical or computational concepts, describing equations and formulas in physical terms for better understanding. Also offers tips for troubleshooting unstable machines and provides practical interpretations of vibration measurements.

This revision includes new case histories, the latest techniques, and new designs to comply with recently passed legislation. By keeping the book up to date with new, emerging topics, Boyce ensures that this book will remain the standard and most widely used book in this field. The new Third Edition of the Gas Turbine Engineering Hand Book updates the book to cover the new generation of Advanced gas Turbines. It examines the benefit and some of the major problems that have been encountered by these new turbines. The book keeps abreast of the environmental changes and the industries answer to these new regulations. A new chapter on case histories has been added to enable the engineer in the field to keep abreast of problems that are being encountered and the solutions that have resulted in solving them. - Comprehensive treatment of Gas Turbines from Design to Operation and Maintenance. In depth treatment of Compressors with emphasis on surge, rotating stall, and choke; Combustors with emphasis on Dry Low NOx Combustors; and Turbines with emphasis on Metallurgy and new cooling schemes. An excellent introductory book for the student and field engineers - A special maintenance section dealing with the advanced gas turbines, and special diagnostic charts have been provided that will enable the reader to troubleshoot problems he encounters in the field - The third edition consists of many Case Histories of Gas Turbine problems. This should enable the field engineer to avoid some of these same generic problems
