As suddenly as armies of men withdrew from the field of conflict, other armies of sinister forces took their places in a new and mightier warfare. Will the Christian message suffice for this' hour? Not unless it has an inter racial bearing, for all, equally, everywhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Motive The study of foreign missions has been greatly extended during the last seven. Years since the wide-spread adoption of the small-circle method, and there has grown up a considerable literature intended primarily for the use of study-circles. It is now possible for a group of people who wish to study any of the great mission-fields, to find a text-book written specially for their purpose and giving in small space an admirable account of the nature and history of the country and the progress of Christianity within it. With the progress of missionary study, however, there has become evident a tendency to con centrate attention upon the externals of mission ary work, and the immediate setting of the missionary need, with the result that the essential spiritual forces which have always animated missions and missionaries have slipped some what into the background. This tendency is only a special case of a wide spread danger which represents the defect of the qualities of modern missionary organization. We live in a day when missionary conferences and committees, missionary literature and campaigns cover the ground, and an immense amount of single-hearted labour is being put into the double task of assisting the work ofmissionaries on the field, and awakening and sustaining the missionary passion in the Church at home. Yet there is in all this a peril lest amid our activities we forget God; lest in our insistence on the crisis and opportunity of the present time we shift the ground of missions from the eternal love and mercy of God to the temporary exigencies of a single race or generation. We need to define anew the missionary motive, for our own souls' strength and for the sake of those to whom the missionary appeal is made to-day. This book is a slight contribution to the task. It is not complete within its own limits, still less is it a history of missionary work. Several typical epochs have been chosen, and in them the writers have tried to show how the missionary motive presented itself to devout and faithful souls. No criticism of methods has been attempted, and where controversial matters have been touched, as it was inevi table they should, the endeavour has been made to put the reader en rapport with the best and noblest in each type of religious devotion and expression, without criticism of the remainder. It should be added that this book springs out of corporate thought and prayer, although all the contributors heartily wish there had been more time and opportunity for such preparation, and it is hoped that it may be read and discussed in the same spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Motives to the Missionary Work: A Sermon, Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, at Their Meeting in Rochester, N. Y., October 6, 1863 Co-operation in the work of missions is not left to our dis cretion, or to our good-will; it is imposed as a duty. The command emanates from the highest authority, and can neither be resisted or neglected without sin. The majesty of a sove reign is impressed ou every word, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. NO ingenuity can torture this into mere advice no ignorance or dullness can fail to understand it on no pretext can it be evaded, which would not be equally good against every other precept of the Bible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irene the Missionary At all events, she had reason to be thankful that the loneliness and quietude of her girlish life had led her to pass much time in her father's library, and to read there more of history than most young ladies know. The result of this poring over Plutarch, Rollin, and the Classical Dictionary was that now, as she sailed through the Egean, with the sable mountain shores of Ionia on one hand, and the many-hued, abrupt Cyclades on the other, she saw far more than was visible to the naked eye. She saw races and kingdoms and glories of famous ages; she saw the grace and splendor and power of Hellas and Persia and Rome; she saw the sublime past brooding over the beautiful present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inside Views of Mission Life But there is another course - and I am happy to say that, as far as my observation goes, the large majority of young missionaries choose it in preference to the other - to take one's stand on the comfortable conviction that our seniors in the service are entirely ready to grant the fact of our ability and that it only remains for us to prove the possession of ability by diligent mastery of our profession. From the standpoint of the older missionaries, I suppose there are few indeed who do not look forward to the advent of fresh young life from America in high hopes of something better, brighter and more promising in every way than they themselves have been able to contribute to the common stock. And more often than not the young missionary finds himself, from force of circumstances, loaded up with work long before he should be so busy, in justice to his ultimate and highest usefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West When he could barely walk, I took him to the cathedral one afternoon when I went back for something I had left: after morning service. I left him down in the nave by the door, while I walked up to the chancel. I was busied there for a few moments, and when I turned to go out, he had advanced half-way up the middle aisle, and was standing where the declining sun, streaming through the great painted west window, threw a golden light around his curly head. And a tiny little oh jcet he was in that great, quiet church. It was very still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Once and again she importuned me to gather it together into a connected recital. When in 1889 we had settled upon having a summer cottage on Lake Michigan, I yielded to her request and began these "Reminiscences." I could give to them only my summer vacations. Pressing duties of life allowed me no other time. I finished them in 1904. I have only two motives in printing them. First, to accede to the wishes of one dear to me, whose desire I want all the more to comply with since she has been taken from my side. Second, to pen an honest record out from a tenderly grateful heart of how kind and good and helpful to a brother man were those who were wrong in belief and those who were wild and wicked in conduct of the men whom he knew and loved "in the mountains." The Rev. G.D. B. Miller has added to his life of faithful help to me the great kindness of supervising the printing and publishing of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of the Missionary Concept Few men are as able and as qualified by travel and personal observation to discuss the mission fields of the world as Dr. Goucher, who delivered the last lectures of the Nathan Graves Foundation at Syracuse University. His clear, lucid style and convincing logic, and his absorbing interest in missions, invest these lectures with unusual interest and value to all who wish to study the subject of missions in its philosophical, its broadest, and its practical aspects. His discussion of China is at a time when that vast empire is awakening to Western thought and beginning earnestly to seek it, and also at a time when Western nations are commencing to appreciate that remarkable people. No people have contributed so much to their awakening as the missionaries of our own and other churches. Fifty years of sowing is being rewarded with clearly apparent verdure and promise of abundant grain. Along with appeals of salvation have been instructions and examples in the best forms of our civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Missionaries: A Series of Biographies The Author, some few years since, delivered in Edinburgh, Manchester, and Liverpool, a lecture bearing the title of this volume, containing six short biographical notices of eminent missionaries. A wish was then expressed by many who heard the lecture, and has often been repeated since, that those notices should be enlarged and others added; and the present volume is the result of those suggestions. While not ignorant that the labours of primitive missionaries present a tempting subject for narration, the Author has restricted himself to the toils of modern evangelists, both because this gives greater unity to his notices, and because even this field is more than ample enough for one volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children's Missionary Story-Sermons It was Victor Hugo who said that the Eighteenth Century distinguished itself by the discovery of Man, but the glory of the Nineteenth Century was the discovery of Woman. Were he among us to-day he would complete his interpretation of history by saying that the Twentieth Century belongs to the Child. This is the Children's Century. Anything, therefore, that will help the children find their place in the coming work of the world is worth while, and what work can compare with that of winning the world for Christ? It was to interest children, first in the wonderful lives of the missionaries themselves, and then in their great work - the greatest work in the world - that these Story-Sermons were written. They grew out of a felt need in my own church work. Leaders of Mission Bands and Lightbearer Circles and teachers of Sunday-school classes were at a loss to discover a method of approach to the missionary problem.
