Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Lands Afar: A Second Series of Mission Stories of Many Lands, a Book for Young People; Profusely Illustrated This region which we have thus briefly described is most interesting to us because it is so intimately connected with the missionary labors of Moffat and Livingstone and other brave and sainted men who have given their lives for the benefit of their fellow-men. Robert Moffat labored long and successfully among the Bechuanas. Livingstone went from Kuruman, which you will find on the sketch map, northward to Lake Ngami, and then on until he reached the Zambesi, discovering the Victoria Falls, probably the most marvelous of all the cataracts on the face of the earth. Later, Livingstone went still farther north ward, revealing to the world something of the horrors of the slave traffic and calling upon Christendom to send the gospel to the tribes of the interior. Upon the northern boundaries of what is now called Zambesia, Livingstone died, while upon his knees praying for Africa. Sooner than he thought has the civilized world reached out to the region which he explored, and commerce and Christian missionaries have attempted to do what he sought to have them do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary in Many Lands: A Series of Interesting, Sketches of Missionary Life and Labours, and of the Progress of the Gospel in Foreign Countries The present volume was written with the design of awakening in the minds of the young, particularly, an interest in the missionary cause - the great enterprise, I think it may safely be said, of the Church and the age. The narratives are not, in the accustomed phraseology of moral-tale writers, founded on fact, but are facts themselves. In the matter of style there is not, possibly, that elaborateness or rigid precision and finish which scholars might desire; but there is clearness and simplicity, I trust, qualities quite as desirable in a book for general readers as any that might be named. In an experience, as a speaker to the young, of twenty years' standing, I have discovered that they prefer an incident or fact stated in simple, clear words, to one robed in beautiful drapery, or smothered with a profusion of finely chosen or high sounding epithets. Book excerpt: It has been many years since any serious study of demon experiences has been published, and possibly never before a compilation from competent observers in many parts of the world. The reason for this omission is not clear, but the result has been a feeling on the part of many Christians that these strange (to us moderns) phenomena were only valid in Bible times. But if these things are in fact still going on today, the church should be aware of them; and if true in other lands, as indicated in this book, then a further study needs to be made of demonology here in the United States. Item: Could certain types of cases in mental hospitals be better relieved by prayer than by modern medical treatments? This subject needs study, research and experiment by Christian ministers, as well as secular medical experts. As to the truthfulness of the stories in this book, we believe that all are valid. Most of the missionaries and others reporting are known to us either personally, or by reputation, as being honest and not subject to hallucinations. That the incidents occurred seems indisputable. As to why they occurred, and what caused them- that is another question. On the surface there seems every evidence that strange spirits have seized and often spoken through their victims. Many of these incidents parallel those in the New Testament, where the cause is clearly stated as demon possession. Some who read these pages may wish to put forward other explanations than ones presented in this book, and discussion of these viewpoints should prove valuable. This book is not seeking to prove modern-day demonology. It is attempting to open the subject to those who are interested. -THE PUBLISHERS
