An absentee father. A gambling-addicted mother who seems to show up only when she needs something—preferably money. Natalea survived her childhood and teenage years because of her best friend, Drake Harte, and his family. Even though she's been in love with Drake for years, she refuses to let her lust get in the way of their friendship. Life without Drake is not possible and sex would certainly complicate things. Drake Harte is not only known as the most eligible bachelor and firefighter in Gamble Park, Florida, he's also known for sexing the ladies and leaving them. Only he knows the reason he can't make a commitment to the women throwing themselves at him—he's in love with his best friend. It's time he either goes for it or moves on...and he's going after Natalea with everything he's got.

She's outspoken, brazen and wants nothing more than to escape the Nevadan hell hole that she calls home. On the brink of eighteen, with a deceased mother and a well-meaning, yet absent father, she is forced to fend for herself. The only person she's ever had to depend on is her borderline obsessive stepbrother, Ryan. But, what used to be her anchor is quickly becoming a loose cannon. When Remi gets the opportunity to attend the best private school in the state during her senior year of high school, she jumps at the chance. Then she meets Mr. James. Ornery, aloof, and totally irresistible. Most girls would swoon in secrecy. Most girls would doodle his name with hearts in their notebook. But Remi Stringer has never been like most girls.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics Get ready to change the way you think about economics. Nobel laureate Richard H. Thaler has spent his career studying the radical notion that the central agents in the economy are humans—predictable, error-prone individuals. Misbehaving is his arresting, frequently hilarious account of the struggle to bring an academic discipline back down to earth—and change the way we think about economics, ourselves, and our world. Traditional economics assumes rational actors. Early in his research, Thaler realized these Spock-like automatons were nothing like real people. Whether buying a clock radio, selling basketball tickets, or applying for a mortgage, we all succumb to biases and make decisions that deviate from the standards of rationality assumed by economists. In other words, we misbehave. More importantly, our misbehavior has serious consequences. Dismissed at first by economists as an amusing sideshow, the study of human miscalculations and their effects on markets now drives efforts to make better decisions in our lives, our businesses, and our governments. Coupling recent discoveries in human psychology with a practical understanding of incentives and market behavior, Thaler enlightens readers about how to make smarter decisions in an increasingly mystifying world. He reveals how behavioral economic analysis opens up new ways to look at everything from household finance to assigning faculty offices in a new building, to TV game shows, the NFL draft, and businesses like Uber. Laced with antic stories of Thaler’s spirited battles with the bastions of traditional economic thinking, Misbehaving is a singular look into profound human foibles. When economics meets psychology, the implications for individuals, managers, and policy makers are both profound and entertaining. Shortlisted for the Financial Times & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award

Book excerpt: AllieWhen I moved to River's Edge, dating was the last thing on my mind. I definitely didn't expect to fall for him. Jesse Shepherd. Popular. Star athlete. Cocky as hell. You know the type. But as time passed, I realized there was more lurking beneath that gorgeous exterior.Secretive. Angry. A little bit broken. The more I peeled back his layers, the deeper I fell. Until I slammed headfirst into his sea of lies.JessI blew my shot. Pissed everything away-college, lacrosse, my future-only to end up right back where I started in River's Edge. I was content to revel in my misery, spending my days drowning in a bottomless pit of booze and girls.Until I saw her. Allison Parrish. Beautiful. Sarcastic. Perpetual bad attitude. The pretty little distraction from the shit show that was my life. But the sins of my past were closing in on me, and I learned the hard way that nothing gold can stay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior genetics has always been a breeding ground for controversies. From the “criminal chromosome” to the “gay gene,” claims about the influence of genes like these have led to often vitriolic national debates about race, class, and inequality. Many behavior geneticists have encountered accusations of racism and have had their scientific authority and credibility questioned, ruining reputations, and threatening their access to coveted resources. In Misbehaving Science, Aaron Panofsky traces the field of behavior genetics back to its origins in the 1950s, telling the story through close looks at five major controversies. In the process, Panofsky argues that persistent, ungovernable controversy in behavior genetics is due to the broken hierarchies within the field. All authority and scientific norms are questioned, while the absence of unanimously accepted methods and theories leaves a foundationless field, where disorder is ongoing. Critics charge behavior geneticists with political motivations; champions say they merely follow the data where they lead. But Panofsky shows how pragmatic coping with repeated controversies drives their scientific actions. Ironically, behavior geneticists’ struggles for scientific authority and efforts to deal with the threats to their legitimacy and autonomy have made controversy inevitable—and in some ways essential—to the study of behavior genetics.

Book excerpt: Within the last few years Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery technology has established itself as a key technology for enterprises that wish to improve the quality of the results obtained from data analysis, decision support, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. The Fourth International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2002) continues a series of successful conferences dedicated to this topic. Its main objective is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. The conference focuses on the logical and physical design of data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems. The scope of the papers covers the most recent and relevant topics in the areas of association rules, clustering, Web mining, security, data mining techniques, data cleansing, applications, data warehouse design and maintenance, and OLAP. These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the conference. We received more than 100 papers from over 20 countries, and the program committee finally selected 32 papers. The conference program included one invited talk: “Text Mining Applications of a Shallow Parser” by Walter Daelemans, Univer- ty of Antwerp, Belgium. We would like to thank the DEXA 2002 Workshop General Chair (Roland Wagner) th and the organizing committee of the 13 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA 2002) for their support and their cooperation.

Given that educational institutions were among the first to embrace the new technology of behavior change in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it is apparent that we have had the opportunity to learn a great deal. The evolution of the field of behavior therapy has witnessed a change in the behavior therapist from an adolescent fascination with repeatedly demonstrating the effectiveness of the new technology to a mature recognition of the complex implications of the behav ioral paradigm for individuals, systems, and society. Many "facts" now taken for granted were considered impossibilities a mere two decades ago. In her 1986 presidential address to Division 25 of the American Psychological Association, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff reviewed a number of changes in attitude in education that were strongly influenced by behavior therapy. Most educators now agree that (a) everyone can learn, (b) complex skills can be taught, (c) precise, general, and durable performance can be taught, and (d) barriers to learning can be overcome. In addition, we would add that behavior therapy is being applied to increasingly more complex human problems, such as social skill deficits, internalizing disorders, and dysfunctional systems and organizations.
