Book excerpt: Challenging the notion that civilization started in Greece, this uncompromising classic attempts to prove that the true authors of Greek philosophy were not Greeks but Egyptians. The text asserts that the praise and honor blindly given to the Greeks for centuries rightfully belong to the people of Africa, and argues that the theft of this great African legacy led to the erroneous world opinion that the African continent has made no contribution to civilization. Quoting such celebrated Greek scholars as Herodotus, Hippocrates, Aristotle, Thales, and Pythagoras, who admit to the influence of Egyptian studies in their work, this edition sheds new light on traditional philosophical and historical thought. Originally published in 1954, this book features a new introduction.

Book excerpt: "The Mis-Education of the Negro," originally published in 1933 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, is arguably his greatest book. The thesis of "The Mis-Education of the Negro" is that African Americans of his time were being culturally indoctrinated, rather than taught, in American schools. This conditioning, he claims, causes African-Americans to become dependent and to seek out inferior places in the greater society of which they are a part. He challenges his readers to become autodidacts and to "do for themselves," regardless of what they were taught. "The Willie Lynch Letter" written by Willie Lynch is widely considered to be one of the top 100 most controversial books of all time. For many, "The Willie Lynch Letter" is required reading for various courses and curriculums. And for others "The Willie Lynch Letter" is simply a highly controversial book that they must have as a reference tool and for self enlightenment. This beautifully produced volume, which includes both "The Mis-Education of the Negro" and "The Willie Lynch Letter," should be a part of everyone's personal library.

Book excerpt: Willie Lynch, a British slave owner from the West Indies, stepped onto the shores of colonial Virginia in 1712, bearing secrets that would shape the fate of generations to come. Within this manuscript, allegedly transcribed from Lynch’s speech to American slaveholders on the banks of the James River, lies a blueprint for subjugation. Lynch’s genius lay not in brute force but in psychological warfare. He understood that to break a people, one must first break their spirit. His methods—pitiless and cunning—sowed seeds of distrust, pitting slave against slave, exploiting vulnerabilities, and perpetuating a cycle of suffering. This document sheds light on the brutal realities of slavery and the ways in which its legacy continues to shape contemporary society

Book excerpt: For centuries the world has been misled about the original source of the Arts and Sciences; for centuries Socrates, Plato and Aristotle have been falsely idolized as models of intellectual greatness; and for centuries the African continent has been called the Dark Continent, because Europe coveted the honor of transmitting to the world, the Arts and Sciences. It is indeed surprising how, for centuries, the Greeks have been praised by the Western World for intellectual accomplishments which belong without a doubt to the Egyptians or the peoples of North Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 Reprint. Mostly probably a hoax, this letter to slave owners in the ante-bellum American South purports to advise on how to manage a slave population. The writer, himself a slaveowner from the Caribbean, advises other slave masters on his method for controlling black slaves. The document has been in print since at least 1970, but first gained widespread notice in the 1990s, when it appeared on the Internet. Since then, it has often been promoted as an authentic account of slavery during the 18th century, though its inaccuracies and anachronisms have led historians to conclude that it is a hoax. Still an interesting view of slavery from the psychological perspective of "breaking" human beings into acceptance of their captivity. Lynch draws comparisons between the "breaking" of slaves and the breaking of horses, suggesting that processes are similar in several ways. Illustrated with contemporary engravings of slave life.

Book excerpt: The purport of the present volume, in contradistinction to the idea of the Negro being designed only for a servile condition, is to demonstrate that the Sable inhabitants of Africa are capable of occupying a position in society very superior to that which has been generally assigned to them. -from the Preface This extraordinary book, first published in 1848, serves as both an angry denunciation of the "terrible institution" of slavery in the United States and a celebration of the survival and achievements of Africans in America in the pre-Civil War era. A Tribute for the Negro: .explains the "sin of slavery" .refutes notions of the correlation of intellectual ability to skin color .explores the history of slavery across the globe .discusses the "pernicious influence of slavery" .mounts an impassioned defense of African culture .offers numerous biographical accounts of slave life in America. An important document of the North American slave experience-and of the abolitionist movement it inspired both in the States and abroad-this is must reading for anyone interested in this most shameful aspect of American history. British writer WILSON ARMISTEAD (1819¬-1868) was a correspondent of Charles Darwin. He also wrote Anthony Benezet (1859).

Book excerpt: A powerful and impassioned historical account of the largest successful revolt by enslaved people in history: the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1803 “One of the seminal texts about the history of slavery and abolition.... Provocative and empowering.” —The New York Times Book Review The Black Jacobins, by Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James, was the first major analysis of the uprising that began in the wake of the storming of the Bastille in France and became the model for liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of plantation owners toward enslaved people was horrifyingly severe. And it is the story of a charismatic and barely literate enslaved person named Toussaint L’Ouverture, who successfully led the Black people of San Domingo against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces—and in the process helped form the first independent post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. With a new introduction (2023) by Professor David Scott.
