Book excerpt: The Miracles of Antichrist is a profoundly philosophical tale of Christian theology told in this captivating prose by Nobel Prize laureate Selma Lagerlöf. This work narrates a love story between Gaetano, a young man who ultimately converts to socialism and to working for the interest of the people in need all around the world, and of Micaela, a devotee who falls in love with Gaetano. Micaela sees Gaetano's absence of faith as a great evil, making their chance at having a love story rather bleak. The novel's plot was developed during a trip to Sicily when Lagerlöf became familiar with a Sicilian legend: "When Antichrist comes, he shall seem as Christ" and took inspiration from the tale. The story circles around the antichrist in the form of a statue that Micaela prays to, which performs alleged miracles that are indiscernible from those of Christ. This is a beautifully written novel with a thoughtful plot and an amazing character development. Lagerlof examines the outlines of faith and how faith shapes our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the popular theology of our day, Christians should not expect to get out of experiencing the tribulation or the end times. Nowhere in the Bible does the Lord promise us this, say Michael Brown and Craig Keener, two leading, acclaimed Bible scholars. In fact, they say, Jesus promises us tribulation in this world. Yet this is no reason to fear. In this fascinating, accessible, and personal book, Brown and Keener walk you through what the Bible really says about the rapture, the tribulation, and the end times. What they find will leave you full of hope. God's wrath is not poured out on His people, and He will shield us from it--as he shielded Israel in Egypt during the ten plagues. So instead of taking comfort in what God hasn't promised, take comfort in the words of Jesus: He has overcome the world, and we live in his victory.

Book excerpt: The Miracles of Antichrist is a philosophical novel by Selma Lagerlöf. Written as a love story between a young socialist and atheist Gaetano and Donna Micaela who is a Christian, the novel in fact represents author's criticism of socialism. The plot of the novel was inspired by a Sicilian legend: "When Antichrist comes, he shall seem as Christ", and the story centers around the antichrist in the form of a statue that Micaela prays to which seems to perform apparent miracles that are indistinguishable from those of Christ.

Book excerpt: She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and is best remembered for her children's book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils).A visit in 1900 to the American Colony in Jerusalem became the inspiration for Lagerlf's book by that name. The royal family and the Swedish Academy gave her substantial financial support to continue her passion By 1895, she gave up her teaching to devote herself to her writing. With the help of proceeds from Gsta Berlings Saga and a scholarship and grant, she made two journeys which were largely instrumental in providing material for her next novel. With Elkan, she traveled to Italy, and she also traveled to Palestine and other parts of the East.In Italy, a legend of a Christ Child figure that had been replaced with a false version inspired Lagerlf's novel Antikrists mirakler (The Miracles of the Antichrist). Set in Sicily, the novel explores the interplay between Christian and socialist moral systems. However, most of Lagerlf's stories were set in Vrmland.Lagerlof was asked by the National Teacher's Association in 1902 to write a geography book for children. She interestingly combined informative facts of Sweden's geography with a boy named Nils Holgersson. When the boy got in trouble, he traveled to many different provinces, allowing children to learn about Sweden while staying interested.
