Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ministry guide has been written to provide information about how to provide support ministry to the people with whom you work. This guide is also for people who work in many different ministry settings, a church or denominational administrative office, a small or medium size church, a parachurch or missions focused organization, and large churches. It will assist them with how they look at their ministry, and the level of support that is needed for their particular setting. A call to ministry is an important thing to understand for an administrative assistant; your heart and the way you deal with people and tasks are different if you understand your position as a call to ministry rather than a job for a paycheck. If you understand that you represent not just your pastor and your church, but Christ to every person who calls, stops by, e-mails, etc., you approach your tasks and people differently. Working as the assistant to a pastor, or any person in ministry, you have to approach your tasks with an understanding of who you are serving, and you are serving Christ and his people. The position of Administrative Assistant is a vital part of the over-all ministry of your church and the congregation. You are the gate-keeper, bridge-builder, keeper of the “information”, soother of wounded feelings, and the deliverer of unwanted news. You are the person who has your finger on the pulse of your congregation and your community. You are the person people will come to for answers. You will handle thousands of details related to dozens of different projects and commitments for your pastor. You will help make your pastor’s ministry seamless. While all of these descriptions may make your head spin, this is a part of the ministry of being an assistant. You can look at each day as a challenge or an adventure. If you understand your job as a ministry and understand your call to this ministry you are ready for a great adventure. Begin each day with a prayer for wisdom and strength, surrender your mind and will to God, and prepare yourself to work with the heart of a servant. As Christ walks alongside you in your daily life, you will learn to walk along side your pastor and to be a partner in their ministry.

An active parish bereavement ministry involves many parishioners performing various forms of compassionate service. In Guide for Forming a Parish Bereavement Ministry, author Robert Valle guides parish leaders toward creating a bereavement ministry that flows from the liturgical and pastoral vision of the Church’s official funeral rites. He explains the theology and key pastoral insights of the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF) and outlines the phases of bereavement ministry, from accompanying the bereaved at the time of death to the preparation of the funeral liturgies, then home visits and acts of compassion throughout the following year. This resource provides practical advice and downloadable materials for training ministers in the theological, spiritual, and human dimensions essential for effective bereavement ministry. Contributing author Paula Kosin provides scripts and other editable downloads for facilitating a grief support group. Guide for Forming a Parish Bereavement Ministry—together with An Introduction to Bereavement Ministry: Caring for Those Who Mourn, a resource for bereavement ministers and Grieving: A Spiritual Process for Catholics, a book for the grieving—provide the training, insight, and guidance for forming a parish bereavement ministry that will bring comfort and peace to all in your community who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously unused primary sources obtained from both sides of the Atlantic, this study provides a more fundamental, consistent, and balanced source-based assessment of the role of the U.S. Peace Corps across its entire existence in Africa. The study sheds light on a new and intriguing historical perspective of the Peace Corps’ meaning and significance. Though the main trust is Cameroon, the study offers a window to understanding Peace Corps performance in all of Africa, and the larger global community. It examines Volunteers’ service in countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and Guinea, showing how the agency transitioned from a Cold War agency to the Post-Cold War era, while asking important questions about the continuous relevance of Peace Corps in Africa. In addressing the topic, the book goes beyond the Peace Corps and delves into America’s "Achilles heels," which was the culture of anti-black racism, showing how it impacted U.S. foreign policy in the post-World War II era. The book interrogates modernization theories showing how those ideas shaped the creation of the Peace Corps, but ultimately contributed to the agency’s problems. The book questions the Peace Corps’ effectiveness as a development organization and much more. Yet for all the agency’s problems, the Peace Corps served as a rite of passage for returned Volunteers to make everlasting contributions to American life and society. This book contributes to modern African and American studies, and to diplomatic history.

Book excerpt: The Transformation of John Gruneburg is a suspense novel whose theme is the timeless struggle of good over evil. This fictional narrative focuses on an exceptional Naval Officer whose devotion to duty, honor, and country entangles him in rogue missions tied to a top secret CIA covert operation. Always loyal to the chain of command, he perseveres to complete each mission, being told that he is saving American lives. Psychologically broken, his sense of right versus wrong is overshadowed by his dedication to duty. The main character, John Gruneburg, struggles to escape from memories of his past. He becomes his own defender and prosecutor, knowing his past actions were wrong, while trying to justify why he did not have the moral strength to reject the orders that were imposed upon him. Reoccurring nightmares associated with his violent past lead to John's treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In book 3 of the series, The Transformation of John Gruneburg describes the accomplishments that lead to unmeasured pride for John and his family, experiencing the privilege to serve one's country while doing something that he enjoyed. Yet John has his moments when he contemplates the depth of his inner fears. Is he concerned that his reputation would be destroyed if his past was revealed, and he was identified as an assassin? Are his reoccurring nightmares associated with his violent past? Are the memories of past missions surfacing feelings of regret for what he had done? Or are his nightmares tied to his fear that his past will be exposed? What did he fear the most? Each time he went through the agony of introspective analysis, self-examining his own conscience, he ended with the same conclusion. It all came down to the fact that he must continue to conceal his past. His involvement with the CIA must remain hidden. Recognizing the government's investment in John's education and training, influential colleagues come to his aid. John struggles to suppress memories of the life he led as a CIA assassin, but in the end, a transformed Lieutenant Commander John Gruneburg rises from the ashes of his past. Robert H. Laudeman is a retired federal employee with years of experience creating technical documents and reports in both industry and government. He began writing as a leisure activity and has enjoyed authoring The Transformation of John Gruneburg, his third venture into fiction. The Transformation of John Gruneburg is the final work of a three-part series, which begins with The Liberation of John Gruneburg and followed with The Transition of John Gruneburg.
